24/25 - Autumn 2, Week 6

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

As we approach Christmas, the festive spirit at William Ford has been truly uplifting, with two incredible performances this week showcasing the amazing talents within our school.

On Tuesday, the entire school united for the iSingPop Christmas concert, a stunning event that brought music, storytelling, and the Nativity to life. Pupils sang their hearts out, performed under dazzling lights, and shared the timeless story of the very first Christmas with parents and peers. This event was part of our enrichment programme, which ensures that every child at William Ford experiences at least 11 engaging experiences during their time with us. iSingPop exemplifies this commitment, giving every child the chance to perform and represent the school—this time through the universal language of music.

The following day, our school was filled with energy and rhythm as we hosted the iRockSchool concert. Children who have been learning instruments performed in mini rock bands, wowing us with their confidence and teamwork. And, as a special treat, our very own staff band joined the fun, bringing the house down with their performance! These experiences reflect our belief in nurturing every child’s potential, whether in music, sport, or the arts.

In Collective Worship, we concluded the inspiring story of Joseph, reflecting on his journey from hardship to forgiveness and success. Joseph’s story reminds us of the importance of trust, resilience, and compassion—qualities we strive to foster in our pupils every day.

We are so proud of our pupils and staff for their efforts and achievements this week. Their creativity and enthusiasm make William Ford a truly fantastic place to learn and grow. With more festive events on the horizon, the countdown to Christmas is filled with excitement and joy!

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mr. David Huntingford

Puzzles wanted!

If you are having a clear out before Christmas and have any puzzles you no long want please donate them to our school to help with fine motor skills. We are looking for any puzzle from early years, wooden ones to mult pieces. Any donations will be greatly appreciated.

Don't forget to collect your child at 1.45pm on Wednesday for the Christmas fête. Children who have consent to walk home alone will be released at 1.45pm from the classroom along with pupils being collected by parents.

We also finish at 1.30pm on Friday 0th December.

Thank You

Thank you, to our friends Peter Chand and Dagenham United Charity. For several years former mayor Peter and his colleagues and Dagenham United have supported our families by providing us with gift vouchers, toys, presents and even a huge number of Easter eggs every April.

This year again, over £700 in vouchers for families in need. So huge thanks to Dagenham United Charity.

Tales from India by Bali Rai

I’m suggesting Tales from India by Bali Rai because I enjoyed the book and I don’t usually enjoy reading. If I enjoyed this book, I’m sure others will enjoy it as well. My favourite character is Birbal, who has the brains of Albert Einstein and Akbar, who is the emperor of India. My favourite chapter is the last one where Birbal finds a thief.

Year Three

As the children approach the end of their first term at William Ford, we can reflect upon just how well they have adapted to junior school and the amazing progress that they have made, and we look forward to having the opportunity to build upon this next term.

What we have learnt about this week

We have been very busy with learning and Christmas preparations this week.

In English, we have finished writing and editing our informal letters and have begun looking at the features of a postcard.

We have also finished our shared reading book Around the World in Eighty Days, which the children have really enjoyed.

In maths, we have continued our shape unit, and we have focused on types of angles and have learnt the terms parallel and perpendicular.

We have found out more about the process and reasons for mummification in our history lesson this week.

What we will learn about next week

In English, the children will plan and write a postcard using the correct features.

In maths, we will continue with our work on shape and with our regular times tables testing.

On Wednesday, we will be having a design and technology day when we will design, prepare and begin making our own Egyptian collars to wear during Egypt Day next term. The children will be practising their sewing skills to attach their motifs to their collar.

We will of course continue with our Christmas festivities too.

Year Four

It seems unbelievable that we are now so close to the end of this term. The children have worked so hard and are making fantastic progress.

What we have learnt about this week

In English, the children engaged in a thought-provoking exercise where they wrote letters to the President of South Africa. They expressed their feelings about apartheid, demonstrating not only their writing skills but also their understanding of significant historical issues.

In maths, we focused on the concepts of multiplication and division, specifically by 10 and 100. The children grasped these ideas well, applying them to various practical problems to enhance their understanding and confidence.

During our Religious Education sessions, we explored the festival of Diwali, comparing it with Christmas. This comparative study allowed the children to appreciate different cultural traditions and their meanings.

What we will learn about next week

In English, students will focus on practising their editing skills. This will involve reviewing their written work to identify and rectify errors, enhancing both their attention to detail and overall writing quality.

In Maths, we will be wrapping up our unit on multiplying by 10 and 100. The children will consolidate their understanding by participating in a range of practical activities that demonstrate how these concepts apply to everyday scenarios.

In Religious Education, students will complete their unit on Hinduism. They will have the opportunity to showcase what they have learned through presentations, which will encourage them to articulate their understanding and respect for diverse beliefs.

Lastly, in History, we will be transitioning from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age. The children will explore the significant advantages of using bronze for toolmaking, linking this to how such advancements have impacted human progress over time.

We also may have time for a few Christmas activities too!

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to another exciting week of learning!

Year Five

The end of term is now in sight and this week we have been beginning to think more about Christmas, as well as continuing to work hard in lesson! Thank you to everyone in Year 5 who took part6 in the iSingPop Christmas show!

What we have learnt about this week

We have now concluded our maths topic on fractions and have been reinforcing our understanding through some problem-solving questions.

In grammar, we explored the use of rhetorical questions. In writing, we have been extending our editing skills, both through peer and independent activities.

Our R.E. unit about incarnation and Christmas has concluded with a review of what Christians and non-Christians might do at Christmas.

Our history unit about the Anglos-Saxons concluded with a presentation of what we have learnt in the style of a magazine review

We have also been learning about the ‘blues scale’ in music and making comparisons about the planets in French.

What we will learn about next week

We will be writing our argument based on characters from the book we have been reading, ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ during English lessons.
In maths, we will be revising arithmetic and looking at questions to review our learning from this term.

We will be concluding our music units about the blues and our French language studies of space.

We hope you have a peaceful weekend in the build up to Christmas.

Year Six

The end of the Autumn Term is fast approaching and as always, the children remain focussed and are working well across the curriculum.

What we have learnt about this week

This week, the children started exploring algebra in maths.  This is something that is first introduced in Year 6 and all three classes have worked hard to learn the new mathematical concepts.  In English, the children have refined their editing skills by correcting and improving their speeches about climate change.  They have also worked in small groups to predict what might happen in the next chapter of our shared reading book and then turned their predictions into a short drama.  In R.E. the children learned about the role of music in worship and then worked in small groups to create their own piece of worship music.  The children absolutely loved this task, and the result was a range of creative pieces including Christian rap and contemporary gospel.  In science, the children have examined how white light contains the seven colours of the rainbow whilst in computing, the children have explored how computers may develop in the future.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, the children will continue their exploration of algebra in their maths lessons whilst in English, the children will compare their predictions from this week’s lessons to the next chapter in our shared reading book.  The children will also examine some of their errors in their recent spelling and grammar SATs paper and complete similar questions in order to address the misconceptions made.    In their final geography lesson about mountains, the children will work in groups to plan and record a podcast about mountains on the school’s radio station equipment.  The Year 6 team wish you all a restful weekend as we approach the busy Christmas period.
