24/25 - Spring 2, Week 2

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

What a wonderful week we’ve had, especially with the sun finally making an appearance! It’s been lovely to see the children enjoying the brighter weather during break times and coming into lessons refreshed.

World Book Day Celebration
We had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day this year! Our school was alive with creativity and enthusiasm as pupils and staff brought their favourite book characters to life through a brilliant array of costumes. Whether it was a classic literary figure or a modern-day hero, the effort put into each outfit was truly inspiring. A special congratulations goes out to everyone who took part in our special assembly by reading aloud excerpts from their much-loved stories. Your energy and passion for reading shone through, making the day a memorable one for all. We hope you enjoy this gallery showcasing our wonderful celebration!

Year 6 court visits
A particular highlight this week was our Year 6 classes visiting either the Royal Courts of Justice in London or Snaresbrook Crown Court. The pupils were able to deepen their understanding of how the UK justice system works by re-enacting a real crown court case based on a true story, in which a 13-year-old girl was charged with cyberbullying and received a three-month custodial sentence. This stark example served as a powerful reminder to all our pupils about the seriousness of online behaviour and the far-reaching consequences our actions can have. The visit also offered a glimpse into the various careers within the legal system—who knows, we may see some of our own Year 6 pupils pursuing careers in law in the future!

Collective Worship: Focus on empathy
Our Collective Worship theme of peacemakers continued this week, with a specific focus on empathy—showing kindness and understanding to one another. This ties in perfectly with the lessons learnt from the court visits, highlighting how our actions and words (both online and in person) can make a profound difference. We encourage pupils to reflect on Matthew 7:22, remembering that it is not just what we say, but also how we live by the values we profess.

Traffic concerns on Ford Road
Some parents have expressed concerns about recent traffic incidents on Ford Road. Rest assured, the school has taken this extremely seriously. I have been in contact with our local MP, Margaret Mullane, and local councillor, Cllr Philip Waker, who both responded quickly. They are seeking to arrange a meeting involving William Ford, other schools along Ford Road, and the local council to discuss installing School Streets. This initiative would limit the number of vehicles allowed on Ford Road during drop-off and collection times, thereby improving safety for everyone. I will keep you updated on any developments.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mr. David Huntingford

Mixed-up myths by Alan Dapre

I recommend this book because it talks about nature. It shows emotions like happiness and sadness, which can help you when you’re feeling sad. In this story Rukma is on a Greek holiday and her dad and Raj only care about ticking things off a checklist. My favourite character is Athena.

Year Three

It has been another busy but exciting week in Year 3. We have enjoyed fun activities during World Book Day and it was lovely to see the effort that everyone had gone to with the range of amazing costumes.

What we have learnt about this week

In maths this week we learnt about perimeter and how to calculate it.

In English we learnt about similes and metaphors and used these when writing a character description.

We had our first lesson about the Greeks in history and learnt about Hannukah in our R.E lesson.

Today the children were lucky enough to have a fun filled silly science workshop. Ask the children to tell you about some of the fantastic things they learnt.

What we will learn about next week

In maths next week we are moving on to fractions. Please keep learning the times tables as this will make understanding fractions much easier.

In English we be introducing possessive apostrophes and the children will be designing and describing their own superhero / Greek god.

In science we will be learning how fossils are made and in geography we will be using grid references and answering questions about our class island.

In art we will practise developing the skill of shading.

In R.E we will be learning about rites of passage when we learn more about Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies in Judaism.

Year Four

What a busy and exciting week we’ve had in Year 4 this week.

What we have learnt about this week

The children have been working hard on their diary entries in English this week. They have been writing from either the perspective of Hiccup or Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon. They have worked hard to make these pieces interesting and include all the key features of a diary.

The children were able to participate in Scandinavian food tasting this week to enhance their geographical understanding of these three counties’ cultures. They enjoyed tasting Swedish meatballs and made open sandwiches. They tried pickled vegetables and potato rosti. They were very adventurous – well done year 4. A special than you from us all to the kitchen staff for their help with the cooking and preparation of the meatballs.

We also took part in a range of activities on World Book Day. The children looked fantastic in their costumes. Thank you for your support in this.

What we will learn about next week

English next week will see the children planning and beginning to write their quest stories based around the characters from How to Train Your Dragon.

Maths will see the children developing their understanding of decimals. In history, the children will continue to find out about the Iron Age and the technological events of this period. In RE, the children will continue to think about the Christian concept of Salvation.

Year Five

Year 5 have had a very exciting week enjoying all the fun activities associated with World Book Week. Thank you to everyone who got into the spirit and joined in with dressing up as their favourite book character!

What we have learnt about this week

In English, we have explored the language of Shakespeare by exploring idioms and finding out modern equivalents of Tudor words. As part of our Book Day, we joined in a zoom meeting with the author Benjamin Dean, writing our own character descriptions and a letter to our favourite author.

During Maths this week we have been looking at tenths, hundredths and thousandths and their fraction and decimal equivalents.

In R.E. we have researched people who made sacrifices for others.

We have also been making Easter cards for the children we sponsor in Colombia.

What we will learn about next week

Our Maths will continue to explore fractions and decimals up to three decimal places. We will be ordering and rounding decimals.

In English, we will be learning about the different uses of apostrophes and beginning to look at playscripts.

In history, we will explore the Anglo-Saxon and Viking legacy of place names and researching whether any local places to us were named by Vikings or Anglo-Saxons.

Year Six

It's been a fun and exciting week in year 6, a trip and World Book Day!

What we have learnt about this week

In English this week, we identified the different poetic devices in The Highwayman poem. The children also wrote letters to their favourite authors, asking different questions about their favourite books and asking what inspired them to go into writing. In maths, they learnt how to work out the area of a Parallelogram, the volume of a cuboid, how to read and interpret simple line graphs and explore dual bar charts.

All classes enjoyed taking part in a cyberbullying mock trial at either Snaresbrook court or the Royal courts of justice. They were all great, asking lots of important and valuable questions about the law.

On Thursday, all the children made a great effort dressing up for world book day, it was great celebrating the books we all love to read and where we love to read.

What we will learn about next week

Next week in Year 6, we will be working on relative clauses in English, exploring how they enhance sentences and beginning to look at the features of a formal letter. In PE, we will continue with dance, building on our routines and coordination. In Maths, we will focus on statistics, specifically calculating the mean, before moving on to position and direction. It’s shaping up to be a fun and productive week
