24/25 - Spring 2, Week 6

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

Following on from last week’s update, we are delighted to say that our Year Three day trip to France was absolutely fantastic! It was a long and busy day, but one filled with fun, learning, and unforgettable experiences. From bread and croissant making at a rural French bakery to a visit to a goat farm – not to mention two meals in the ferry's restaurant and enjoying the sunset from the deck – it was a truly valuable and memorable experience for all who went.

This week, Year Five were lucky enough to visit the West End to see The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre in Covent Garden. As well as enjoying the world-class production, pupils explored the wide range of careers involved in bringing a theatre show to life – from acting and costume design to stage management and sound engineering. This experience is one of the 11 engaging opportunities we aim to provide for all pupils and is fully aligned with our curriculum intent, which inspires children to consider the future and the world of work.

We also ended the term by celebrating Easter with a special outdoor event. Year Four gave a moving re-enactment of the Easter story, supported by music, dance, and a wonderful Easter Bonnet Parade. Alongside this, we marked Values Day, where pupils reflected on the school values that underpin our vision:

"Learning from Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, to work diligently, act generously and live at peace with everyone."

All of our values are rooted in the Easter story – from the humility of the Roman soldier who recognised Jesus as a righteous man, to the repentance shown by the criminal on the cross. These are values we aim to live out in our school and in our lives every day.

If you would like to explore these further at home, Mrs Legg has created a series of family-friendly information sheets and activities. You can find them here:

We wish all our families a happy and peaceful Easter. May we all be reminded of the true Christian meaning of Easter – that through Jesus’ death and resurrection, we can be made right with God.

Have a wonderful break and we look forward to welcoming you back in the summer term!

I pray you all have a wonderful break.

Please find attached the Barking and Dagenham Local offer newsletter: Newsletter - Barking and Dagenham SEND Local Offer

We have an amazing new menu to accompany our new pre-ordering system that will go LIVE on Monday 7/4/25.

You can place an order by selecting the RED option for that day or the GREEN option. We are opting for this system due to the huge amount of food waste caused by children ordering one meal and then taking another from the counter. In order to stop foot wastage, we will be checking the children in at lunch and providing the meal they selected. Please REMEMBER TO PRE-BOOK as the office has no way of overwriting lunches, and they are prepared based on the numbers ordered.

If you have not ordered a lunch you must provide a home packed lunch.

Please see the new menu below:

Name: The boy With Wings

Author: Lenny Henry

The book is about a boy who has a 12th birthday but, on this day, he figures out he has wings and he goes on, he realises that he was an egg and he is from a different planet but soon he realises that the fate of the world is in his hands and he has to fight his home country.

My favourite part of the book is when they enter the ship ready fight, and it could S.H.I.I.P.P.E and it is a video game from his mums and laboratory and now they use the skills and test in real life.

In this book there are multiple characters like Tunde, Ron, Ruth, Kylie, Dembe, Jiah and Nev these are just the main characters. This book is set in several places like the school he attends, his house and the laboratory his mum and dad work at (adopted parents)

I would recommend this book because this book is amazing and very funny. It is one of my top 5 reads!

Year Three

This week, the children have had a full and exciting week of learning across various subjects. They’ve been developing their skills and knowledge in a range of areas that promote both creativity and critical thinking. We hope you have a fantastic Easter break.

What we have learnt about this week

In writing, we’ve focused on the importance of editing and refining our work to improve clarity and impact. In history, we explored the life and significance of Alexander the Great, delving into his lasting influence on the world. In math, the children honed their reasoning skills with fractions, working through different problem-solving strategies. Lastly, in art, we practiced botanical drawing, encouraging attention to detail and creativity. It’s been a productive week full of growth and discovery!

What we will learn about next week

When the children return, we will dive into some exciting new topics. In math, we will focus on understanding money, with an emphasis on pounds and pence, helping the children develop essential skills for everyday life. In geography, we will explore the layers of the Earth, learning about its structure and how each layer contributes to the world around us. Finally, in art, we will wrap up our work by exploring abstract flowers, drawing inspiration from the famous artist Georgia O'Keeffe. We’re looking forward to another week of learning and creativity!

Year Four

This week has been another great one. Year 4 has put in a fantastic effort towards there learning.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in Year 4, the children showcased a fantastic re-enactment of the Easter story, demonstrating their understanding of its themes and characters. It was a vibrant display of creativity and collaboration. In Maths, we concluded our unit on decimals, where the students displayed commendable progress and confidence in their skills. Meanwhile, in English, we continued to explore our creative writing skills through poetry, enabling the children to express themselves in imaginative ways.

What we will learn about next week

As we prepare to return to school, I am excited to share our upcoming topics for the new term. In English, the children will dive back into the enchanting world of poetry, exploring various poetic forms and devices. In Maths, we will begin a new unit focused on money, where students will learn about currency, budgeting, and financial literacy. In History, we will continue our exploration of the Roman Empire, delving into its fascinating culture and impact on Britain. Lastly, in Science, we will further investigate electricity, conducting experiments to enhance our understanding.

Year Five

As we come to the end of another term, the children in Year 5 have been working as hard as ever and have certainly earned a good rest over the upcoming holidays.

What we have learnt about this week

We have completed reading ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and concluded our writing to accompany the story. The children have enjoyed learning about Shakespeare this half term and engaging with scriptwriting, drama and setting descriptions. We also enjoyed our theatre visit to see the ‘Lion King’ this week.

Our maths topic finding areas and perimeters has also concluded with finding the areas of rectangles and rectilinear shapes.

Swimming, which forms part of the P.E. curriculum, has now finished and swimming lessons will not continue next term.

As Easter approaches, we have concluded our R.E. topic about salvation, by looking at how the story of the death and resurrection is depicted both in the Gospels and through art in churches.

What we will learn about next term

Next term we will begin our new topic in English based upon the’ Lion King’, which follows our successful visit to the theatre to see the show.

Our music next term will also link to this, as we explore musical theatre in a series of lessons.

In Maths, we will begin to look at statistics, commencing with graphs.

Our new humanities topics will include exploring the ancient civilisation of Baghdad for our History and the study of rivers in Geography.

May the Year 5 staff take this opportunity to wish you all a happy, peaceful time over Easter and we look forward to seeing everyone again at the start of the summer term.

Year Six

What we have learnt about this week

In RE, the children analysed and compared the songs sung on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. In Maths, the children revised Roman numerals, place value, percentages, mixed operations, and arithmetic. In English, they completed their narrative version of "The Highwayman" poem and proofread a paragraph. In PE, the children performed their dances. During Values Day, they discussed humility and created mobiles to represent their ideas.

What we will learn about next week

In the first week, we will continue revising the maths units we've covered and work on enhancing our comprehension skills, including inference, vocabulary, summarizing, predicting, and retrieving information.

We just want to take a moment to express how proud we are of Year 6. They have been working incredibly hard in preparation for SATs. Enjoy the well-deserved break, and we look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for the summer term!
