24/25 - Summer 1, Week 2

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

We are delighted to share some very exciting news: William Ford Junior School has been awarded a Bronze Award in the Pearson National Teaching Awards for 'Making a Difference – Primary School of the Year'!
This is a tremendous achievement and recognises the passion, dedication, and hard work of our whole school community—staff, pupils, and families together. We are incredibly proud that our commitment to making a positive difference in children's lives has been recognised nationally.

At the time of writing, our Year Five pupils taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh outdoor experience have arrived safely at Trewern. They are ready for a week filled with challenge, adventure, and learning beyond the classroom. So far, they have already experienced canoeing, gorge walking, and learning first aid, building practical skills and memories that will last a lifetime.
Next week, we are excited that a second group of pupils will also have the opportunity to take part in a residential experience. This trip is built around three key aims:

  • To grow in independence,

  • To develop teamwork, and

  • To discover something they can be proud of.

These experiences help our pupils develop confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of achievement.

In Collective Worship this week, we reflected on the story of Jesus healing the royal official’s son in Capernaum (John 4:46–54). We thought about how Jesus' healing power reached across distance and how our own faith, encouragement, and kindness can also make a difference to those around us, even when we are not physically close.

In addition, during our Wednesday assembly, Mrs Buckingham led a thoughtful session introducing this week’s Rights Respecting Schools article, linked to Safer Internet Day. Children explored Article 17 (access to reliable information), Article 19 (protection from harm), and Article 34 (protection from exploitation). These powerful themes helped pupils understand their rights in the digital world and how we can all play a part in making the internet a safe and respectful space for everyone.

Our new breakfast club initiative continues to go from strength to strength with now over 50 children accessing this provision.  Children enjoy a healthy breakfast along with some physical activities from small group games to large scale bulldog and tag.  And the best part is, it is all free to William Ford families!  Please contact the school office should your child wish to attend!

For those of you on Twitter/X you can also see a promotional video created by the Department of Education promoting breakfast clubs, filmed at William Ford. https://x.com/educationgovuk/status/1913880354873626913

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. We are proud to be part of such a special community.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mr. David Huntingford

Book: Gangsta Granny strikes again!

I liked this book because I was interested in finding out who the thief was. I recommend this book to children aged 6-12 because this book could be a good bedtime story, but this is also a good book to read in your free time.

Spoiler alert! Some things are missing and someone important is included.

Year Three

What a fantastic week it’s been! Despite the heat turning our classrooms into mini saunas (and a few melted glue sticks!), the children have been absolute stars, working hard and keeping their spirits high.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in Maths, we’ve been busy adding and subtracting money, with children taking on the roles of shopkeepers and customers. It's been a great way to make maths real and relevant, and we encourage you to keep practising this with your children next time you’re out shopping—just don't let them overcharge you too much! In English, we’ve been exploring the island home of Roz, the robot from our class story, creating rich descriptions by imagining what we might see, hear, and smell there. The children have really impressed us with their creativity and attention to sensory detail. In History, we travelled back in time to Ancient Greece and learned about the Battle of Marathon. Ask your child what happened when the messenger ran to Athens—they’ve got the story down perfectly! Over in French, we’ve started learning the numbers up to 12, and the children are enjoying showing off their new counting skills—soon you might hear them saying their age en français!

What we will learn about next week

In Maths, we will begin exploring statistics, focusing on how to read and create pictograms and bar charts. The children will learn how to collect simple data, represent it clearly using visual tools, and most importantly, how to interpret the information to answer questions. In English, we will continue building on our descriptive writing, this time shifting the focus from the island to Roz herself. We’ll be encouraging the children to think about how Roz looks, moves, and behaves—what kind of sounds she might make, how she might feel to touch, and how others might react to seeing her for the first time. This will help them to develop more vivid character descriptions and expand their vocabulary.

Year Four

What a difference having the lovely sunshine has been this week.  The children are really enjoying being able to play on the field in this lovely weather!  We have also taken the opportunity to go outside for some drama.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in maths we have been working with money.  The pupils have been estimating and calculating with money.  Perhaps you could let them have a go at adding some items up and paying for them next time you go shopping!  In English we have started a new adventure story called The Explorers.  It is set in the Amazon Rainforest and will follow a group of children on an adventure.  The children have been using descriptive language to describe the Amazon rainforest as well as learning about where rainforests are found on the planet in geography.  The children have also learned what conservationists and environmentalists are and why their work is so important. They also practised using synonyms to make their writing more interesting.  In RE they have started a new unit about why the Bible is so special and acted out the story of Mary Jones.  Perhaps ask them to retell you the story and what she did in order to get her own copy of the Bible.

What we will learn about next week

In maths, we will move onto time so please encourage your child to read an analogue clock as much as possible.  We will continue to find out about the adventure the children find themselves on in The Explorer and will start to plan their own adventure story with a focus on dialogue and creating a dramatic opening to hook the reader in.

In history the children will be looking at what they know about Iron Age Britain and will be considering what made it possible for the Romans to invade Britain at this time. They will be considering the historical theme of invasion and conquest.

Science will see the children continuing their investigations in electricity and thinking in more detail about the components of different circuits.

Year Five

What an exciting week in Year 5, full of learning, discovery and (for some) a visit to Wales!

What we have learnt about this week

In English, we have continued with our exploration of the Lion King.  Our recent visit to the Theatre in London, to watch a performance, has helped provide a spring- board for our writing. Building upon character descriptions last week, the children have applied the skills learned to create a description of a sunset with greater independence.  We have linked this learning to our music curriculum where the children are finding out all there is to know about musical theatre.  We have also started a new book in our daily reading entitled ‘Journey to the River Sea’ by Eva Ibbotson.

In Maths, we have moved on from reading and interpreting timetables (important real-life skills) but not before the children collected their own data and analysed tables of their own design.  We are now studying angles.  Here the children will consider acute, obtuse and reflex angles before refining their skills in using a protractor.

In Geography we became flood risk consultants and will be linking geography and design and technology as we explore more about rivers.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, we will be designing and making bridges, exploring why rivers flood and the impact of such events as well as visiting Baghdad in history where we will be exploring the Islamic Golden Age.  This also ties in with our new unit in RE and the study of World Religions.  Next week will be exploring the five pillars of Islam.  We hope you have a wonderful weekend

Year Six

What we have learnt about this week:
This week, our Year 6 pupils have shown outstanding commitment and focus as they continue preparing for their upcoming SATs. They have been working incredibly hard across all key areas of the curriculum, showing determination and resilience every step of the way.

In reading, the children have been developing their comprehension skills by practising how to retrieve key information, make inferences, and explain their understanding of texts. They have also been exploring a variety of question types to help them feel confident and prepared.

In mathematics, we have been revising key topics such as fractions, decimals, percentages, and measurement, with a particular focus on solving multi-step problems and explaining mathematical reasoning clearly.

Our grammar, punctuation, and spelling sessions have involved focused revision on sentence structure, verb tenses, punctuation use, and common spelling patterns. The children have been applying these skills in short writing tasks and SATs-style questions.

We are incredibly proud of the positive attitude Year 6 have shown towards their learning and preparation—they are truly rising to the challenge with enthusiasm and maturity.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, we will continue to revise and strengthen our understanding in all SATs areas. In reading, the children will practise answering a range of comprehension questions that test their ability to interpret vocabulary, identify key details, and summarise meaning. In maths, we will revisit arithmetic techniques and reinforce our confidence with reasoning problems, focusing on accuracy, working methodically, and showing clear working out. Grammar and spelling lessons will provide further opportunities to practise commonly tested rules, punctuation use, and spelling accuracy.

Alongside this academic focus, we are also looking forward to a very special event on Thursday 8th May—our celebration of VE Day. This is a significant day in British history, marking the end of World War II in Europe. To commemorate the occasion, the children will take part in a variety of themed activities throughout the day, including learning about life in wartime Britain, creating commemorative art, listening to music from the era, and reflecting on the importance of peace and remembrance. It will be a wonderful opportunity to step back in time and develop a deeper understanding of our shared history.
