25/26 - Autumn 1, Week 2

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

It has been another positive week here at William Ford. Pupils have settled back into school life wonderfully, and there is a real sense of excitement and purpose around the school.

Cookery Lessons with Mrs Watkins
One of the real highlights has been the start of our new cookery programme. Most classes have now enjoyed their first two-hour cookery lesson with Mrs Watkins, our school cook. These sessions are already making a big impact, as children are learning how to prepare nutritious meals, use basic cookery skills, and gain confidence in the kitchen. The final classes will take part next week, before we begin the rolling cycle again so that every child has regular opportunities to cook.

Rights Respecting School – Our Parent Charter
As many of you know, William Ford is a Rights Respecting School. This means we are committed to putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the heart of our school’s ethos and culture. Pupils learn about their rights, respect the rights of others, and apply these principles in their daily lives.

Every class has created its own Class Charter, and alongside this we have introduced a Parent Charter. We would love as many of our parents and carers as possible to read and sign it. If you feel able to put your name to it, please visit the office in the conservatory area where you can sign a blue heart and place it in the box. These hearts will then be added to our Parent Charter display – a lovely way for pupils to see that their families and the whole school community are behind this important initiative.

Parent Charter Wording

We encourage all parents to sign our Parents’ Rights Respecting Charter, which is designed to strengthen the partnership between families and the school. By signing, you are affirming your commitment to work together with teachers and staff in creating a safe, respectful and inclusive environment where every child can thrive. The charter recognises the vital role parents play in their children’s learning, while outlining the school’s responsibility to listen, support and communicate openly with families. Your signature shows your support for building a positive school community where every voice is valued and every child is given the best chance to succeed.

Take a heart, sign your name then place in the box provided.

Signing this is a wonderful way to demonstrate to your children that you support this aspect of the school's work.

Collective Worship
In Collective Worship this week we continued our journey through the story of creation in Genesis, exploring what it means for us today. Pupils have been encouraged to think about how they can play their part in looking after the world and showing gratitude for the good things in their lives.

Funding and Support for Our School
Finally, one of our parents has kindly set up a GoFundMe page after we were contacted by individuals and businesses asking how they could support the school. Alongside this, we continue to share funding proposals with companies as we look for sponsorship to help us further enhance our provision.

To be absolutely clear, there is no obligation or expectation for families to donate. We are simply sharing this so that if you, or someone you know through business or community links, would like to contribute, the option is available.

Our current proposals include:

  • Careers Village – an outdoor space where pupils can explore future careers through hands-on role play.
    https://tinyurl.com/4nxtkys9

  • Community Hub – a welcoming base to support families with advice, mentoring and access to local services.
    https://tinyurl.com/4x2zt94v

  • Cookery – teaching every child to prepare healthy meals and sparking interest in catering careers.
    https://tinyurl.com/46h5fysm

  • Digital Learning – giving pupils the tools and skills they need for the modern world.
    https://tinyurl.com/mpsp7364

You can also view and share our GoFundMe page here: https://gofund.me/ec6f302c4

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of our school community. I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

WIlliam Ford Community Hub / Foodbank

This week The Felix Project delivered lots of fresh vegetables and ready meals to the school. As you may have seen during the school holidays, many of our amazing staff gave up their free time to come and support the Community Hub / Foodbank.

We were blessed with deliveries of fruit, vegetables, kitchen staples such as pasta and rice and over 1000 pre-made individual meals delivered weekly by The Felix Project and a wide selection of amazing products from The Kindness Offensive / Lush.

This was truly an exciting opportunity for William Ford families and our local community. We estimate that we were able to help approximately 100 families each week. During our final week, Sky News joined us to discuss and highlight how important foodbanks are to families, especially during the school holidays.

We have applied for the next round of deliveries in the October half-term. If you would like to be updated on any upcoming deliveries, please scan the QR code below and join the WhatsApp group for regular updates.

Year Three

The children are continuing to settle into Year Three very well and are beginning to adapt to class expectations and workload.

We thank you for your patience as we complete the children’s reading and phonics testing.  Reading books will be coming home as soon as possible.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in English we have written a conflicting argument based on an event from Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx.  We have also practised our use of pronouns.

In maths we have continued our work on place value up to 1000. The children have been working practically with a range of mathematical resources to ensure a more secure understanding.

In science the children have studied the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates. We have also started our new geography unit and this week we learnt about the seven continents.

What we will learn about next week

In English next week, we will practise description writing. We describe the desert using our five senses. In our grammar lesson we will practise using prepositions.

In maths we are continuing with place value. The children will compare and order numbers up to 1000.

We will be learning about muscles in science, and ancient civilisations using BC and AD in history.

Year Four

Another great week in Year Four. Everyone has been working hard and have shown that they have settled well into the year group.

What we have learnt about this week

In English this week the children have been continuing their work on Nell and the Cave Bear. The children have been looking at conjunctions for time and cause and have attempted to use them in their writing.

In maths, the children have been continuing their work on place value and have begun to look at numbers up to 10,000. They have also been practicing their arithmetic skills and have been thinking carefully about the multiplication facts.

Science this week saw the children thinking about invertebrates. They have recapped what they know about these animals and have made comparisons to vertebrates.

In geography, the children have located India on a range of maps. They have thought about where it is located in the world using geographical language such as Equator, Northern Hemisphere and Tropic of Cancer.

In RE, the children have thought about the origins of Hinduism and have discovered that it is considered to be the oldest currently practised religion in the world.

In art, the children were introduced to the Indian design of paisley patterns. They very carefully tried to replicate parts of these interesting designs with a great deal of success.

What we will learn about next week

Next week in English, the children will be planning and retelling an event from the story in their own words. In their grammar lesson they will be looking at verb forms.

Maths will see the children continuing the unit on place value and will continue to work with numbers up to 10,000.

In history, the children will be looking at the achievements of Stone Age humans and will consider which of these still have an impact on us in the modern day.

RE will see the children thinking about the Hindu belief of one god, but many deities. They will also continue the work on paisley patterns in art.

Year Five

Everyone in Year 5 has settled back well this week and we have been working hard on out new curriculum topics.

What we have learnt about this week

In our work on space this week for Science, we have been researching information about the planets. As well as in science, we have been linking space with our French studies where we have been learning about the Solar System and especially the French names for the planets.

In art we have been exploring space imagery and looking at retro space designs in art, architecture and textiles from the 1960s based upon the ‘Space Race’.

In English, we have been finding out about Dorothy Vaughan, from ‘Hidden Figures’ and writing a diary entry based upon her experiences.

In maths, pupils have continued their unit on place value, learning about powers of 10 and partitioning numbers up to 1,000,000.

What we will learn about next week

Next week in Maths we will be continuing our study on place value, looking at comparing and ordering numbers to 1,000,000.

In English, we will be using information from the book ‘Hidden Figures’ to research background information to write a motivational speech for Dorothy.

For Science we will be exploring and explaining the motion of the Earth and planets, whilst in French we will explore ‘Le Soleil et la Lune’ (sun and moon).

In art, we will be looking at creative ways space has been depicted using a range of artistic materials.

We hope you all enjoy a lovely weekend!

Year Six

The children have continued to work hard and put good effort into lessons throughout the week. Just a reminder that the children will need their P.E. kits in school every day as we now work on a three-week rotation and P.E. lessons can move to accommodate this new timetabling.

What we have learnt about this week

This week, the children have completed their baseline assessments in reading comprehension, maths, spelling and grammar. We are really pleased with the great effort they put into their assessments and will use the results to help us create intervention groups where the children can receive intensive support in preparation for their SATs in the summer term. They also enjoyed their first swimming lesson on Tuesday, showing excellent behaviour throughout and polite manners to our coach driver. In English, the children have worked hard on editing their descriptive settings of a Victorian street scene, producing some thoughtful and detailed writing.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, we will be continuing our work on place value in maths, while in English we will focus on character description. In grammar, we will be exploring the use of hyphens to avoid ambiguity.  During our next R.E. lesson, the children will be looking at how Christians believe that humans are made in God’s image.  In art, the children will be moving on to exploring the work of the Victorian artist William Morris whilst in design and technology they will continue to work towards making their own waistcoats in readiness for our Victorian Day which is currently scheduled to be held on Friday 28th November.
