25/26 - Autumn 1, Week 3

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

This has been another exciting week at William Ford. One of the real highlights was the visit from Frankie Bridge, who many will know from S Club Juniors, The Saturdays, BBC Strictly Come Dancing, ITV's I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, and now as a panellist on ITV's Loose Women. Frankie joined us in Collective Worship to share her inspiring story of how she entered such a variety of careers. She spoke about never giving up, believing in yourself and, most importantly, being kind to others, because working well with everyone is often the key to success. This was a powerful and positive message for our pupils and one that linked perfectly to our school vision of helping children grow into people who are successful, healthy, fulfilled, and empowered to make a difference. We were also able to reflect on how her words connect to our Bible verse, “Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths, guide me in your truth and teach me,” reminding us that the journey to success begins with seeking the right path. Our school radio station team had the fantastic experience of interviewing Frankie, a wonderful chance for our young broadcasters to build their skills and confidence.

Frankie’s visit was made possible through our work with Talamo, the company providing our new dyslexia and dyscalculia screener. This week, all our Year 3 pupils have been screened so that we can quickly identify any children who may benefit from additional support with reading, writing or number work. It is a privilege to be able to offer this early help to ensure every pupil has the best chance to thrive.

In Collective Worship we have also continued exploring the Book of Genesis, learning about how the world was made and what it means to care for and take responsibility for God’s creation. These reflections have helped us think about gratitude, respect for the world around us and our place within it.

Today, during our Start-of-the-Week Assemblies, Mrs Legg introduced an exciting change to how we celebrate positive behaviour. Instead of rewarding the house with the most points each term, we will now celebrate the year group that earns the most green points. At the end of each term, the winning year group will receive a sum of money to spend on our sponsored child in Colombia. This approach not only motivates pupils to work hard and behave well for their own success but also helps them recognise that their efforts can directly benefit someone else’s life. It is a wonderful way of putting our vision into action: making a difference to others while growing as successful, healthy, fulfilled, and empowered young people.

We are proud of how our pupils have responded to these opportunities and messages this week and grateful for the ongoing support of our families in helping us provide such meaningful experiences for every child at William Ford.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mr. David Huntingford

If you need to contact me for any reason, for example you have a concern about your child or would like to discuss the interventions/ support in place, please do so by calling or emailing the school office. I will then contact you to discuss or arrange a meeting. Please be aware that I have teaching commitments on Thursdays and Fridays so cannot do anything on these days during the school day.

Thank you for your understanding and patience in me getting back to you.

Our attendance is reported back to the DFE everyday for assessment and we have noticed a high number of absences. We do not always get a response when we call to check up on the child.

Parents are legally required to inform their child's school of an absence on the same day, providing a reason for the absence. Failure to do so can result in the absence being classified as "unauthorised," which may lead to legal consequences for parents, such as fines. Parents should familiarise themselves with their specific school's absence reporting procedures.

How to report an absence

We ask that parents inform the school office of reasons for non-attendance before 9:00 a.m. on the first day of absence by calling 0208 270 6582 and selecting option 1 or by emailing

attendance@williamfordschool.co.uk  stating the pupil's full name, class and reason for absence.

The Office Staff or Parent Liaison Office will call if your child is absent without notification.

This year for our Harvest celebration, we are kindly requesting any donations for our own Community Foodbank.

Any jars, cans, packets of food that can be stored safely until we can offer distribution will be gratefully received.

Please bring any donations to the school office by 3rd October.

Thank You

Year Three

The children have continued to work hard in Year Three this week. All pupils should now have received their reading books and be bringing them home, along with their reading diary, every day. Reading is the key to the rest of the curriculum, and a good reader will become a good writer. Please support the children with their reading progress by hearing them read each day. This does not need to be for an extended period, ten to fifteen minutes is enough. The reading diary should then be signed by an adult to help us keep a record in school of each child’s progress.

What we have learnt about this week

In English this week we learnt about prepositions. We also researched the sphinx and planned and wrote a desert description using the 5 senses.

In maths we estimated and compared numbers using a number line. Many of the children found this challenging but improvements were seen as the week went on.

In history the children learnt about several ancient civilisations and when they occurred.

In R.E. we considered how people are the caretakers of the world and what we should do to protect it and improve it.

What we will learn about next week

Next week will be testing week in Year Three. The children will be tested on reading comprehension, arithmetic and reasoning skills, spelling and grammar. These tests will provide a baseline so we can see each child’s progress over the course of the year.

We will also be learning about the past progressive tense in grammar.

In maths we will begin out addition and subtraction unit of work.

In geography the children will consider the enquiry question ‘What is a country?’

In R.E. we will continue to consider what it means to be God’s caretaker and will look a how various Christians are achieving this in different ways.

Year Four

The children have taken part in a number of tests this week and have worked really hard in these.

In English this week the children have been writing about how to survive in the Stone Age and having been thinking carefully about how to hunt for mammoths. The children have thought about the preparations that they would have to make and also the strategies for this pursuit.

Maths has seen the children practising their arithmetic skills and continuing their work on place value.

The children enjoyed their history lessons this week, thinking about the achievements of Stone Age people. They have realised that our modern world would be a very different place if these ancient peoples had not invented the wheel.

In RE the children have been thinking about monotheism and that in Hinduism, although they believe in many deities, they see these as aspects of one god.

What we will learn about next week

Next week the children will continue with their studies of Nell and the Cave Bear in English. In maths they will be finishing their work on place value.

In geography next week, the children will be investigating the human and physical geography of India.

In science, the children will be considering the environments and habitats of plants and animals. They will also be looking at the impact of humans on these habitats.

Year Five

This week, Year 5 students completed their assessments and showed great focus and determination throughout. We are really proud of how hard they worked and the positive attitude they brought to each task. Well done, Year 5!

What we have learnt about this week

This week, Year 5 have had a busy and productive time across all subjects! In English, we used adverbials to write about key events in Dorothy’s life and worked in groups to research and present information about the Jim Crow laws. In Maths, we explored number lines up to 1,000,000 and practised comparing and ordering numbers up to 100,000. In Geography, we learned about the four nations of the UK and where they are located. In History, we explored why the Anglo-Saxons settled in the UK, looking at the push and pull factors behind settling in the UK.
We also completed our assessments this week, and the children showed excellent effort and focus throughout. Well done, Year 5!

What we will learn about next week

Next week, the children will be finishing their space-themed artwork, using a range of different mediums to bring their ideas to life. In English, they will write an inspirational speech to deliver to Dorothy from our class book Hidden Figures and will then edit and perform their speeches. In Science, we’ll be exploring how the planets move within our solar system. In RE, the children will reflect on the biblical story of Jonah and the Whale and discuss what lessons we can learn from it today. In PE, the children will continue developing their skills in both gymnastics and hockey.

Year Six

The children have continued to work hard and put good effort into lessons throughout the week. It was good to see more of the children having their full P.E. kit in school ready for their P.E. lessons.

What we have learnt about this week

In English this week, the children have continued exploring the novel Street Child.  They have analysed the character of Mr Spink and used their findings to create a Victorian style wanted poster of him.  In maths, the children have been put into five maths groups.  This has meant the numbers in each group is lower and this hugely benefits the children in their learning.  The groupings are not set in stone and changes will be made on a regular basis in response to the children’s needs and progress.  During this week’s science lesson, the children used their internet research skills to research the adaptations that different types of owls have made in order to survive in their different habitats.  All of the Year 6 classes have now had the opportunity to have an afternoon of cooking with our school cook, Mrs Watkins.  They got to taste some different traybakes and then used the school IPads to research recipes for different types of traybakes.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, the children will be moving on to the four rules of number in their maths lessons.  In English, the children will develop their skills in punctuating direct speech in their writing and will then move on to exploring the role dialogue plays within narrative texts.  In geography, the children will be interrogating photographs taken of the 1953 successful ascent of Mount Everest by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.  In our next R.E. lesson the children will be looking at how Christians believe that humans are made in God’s image whilst in science the children will examine extreme adaptations in animals and then create their own creature with suitable adaptations for a specified habitat.
