25/26 - Autumn 2, Week 4

Dear parents and carers,

Another fantastic week at William Ford has taken place. Despite the cold weather there has been lots of fun, enjoyment and learning taking place across the school.

It was wonderful to welcome J Grange to our school this week. He spoke to pupils about neurodiversity and shared honestly about his own experiences of dyspraxia and ADHD. He also talked about his career in motivational speaking and music production and how his neurodiversity has helped him thrive in those fields. Staff, pupils and the parents who attended learnt a great deal and it was encouraging to see how impressed he was with the provision already in place at William Ford. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this inspiring visit.

In Collective Worship we continued our learning from the Book of Daniel. We focused on Daniel’s three friends who chose to follow God rather than obey the King’s instruction to bow to the golden statue. This helped us reflect on courage, faith and standing firm in what is right.

As we move into December there are lots of exciting activities taking place. Please keep an eye on the School Calendar so you know what is coming up. This includes our ever popular iSing Pop concert, Christmas dinner, Christmas jumper day,  Christmas disco, trips to church, and all the fun that comes with celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

My Best Friend the Suffragette by Sally Morgan

This is an exciting and inspiring story about two brave girls who want to change the world. The book shows what life was like when girls and women weren’t allowed to vote, and how people stood up for fairness.

Year Three

The children have worked hard in all areas of the curriculum this week and have learnt lots of new concepts to apply to their upcoming work.

What we have learnt about this week...

This week in English, the children have learnt about the features of formal and informal letters. They have also practised their alphabetical order skills.

We have completed the last few lessons of our addition and subtraction unit this week. The children have learnt strategies for calculating to 100 and have also practised using inverse operations.

In music the children are continuing the unit of work entitled ‘mountains’ and have been creating some of their own compositions.

In art we made our own papyrus paper ready for the children to decorate it with their own Egyptian designs and motifs.

The children have competed their end of unit assessment task in R.E. this week leaving us some extra time to complete some exciting advent tasks.

What we will learn about next week:

The children will be planning, writing and editing their second assessment piece of writing, which will be an informal letter.

We will begin our next topic in maths, ‘multiplication’ where will learn multiplication strategies to help solve calculations.

Next week in geography, the children will practise locating features on a map using coordinates.

In art we will be putting our designs on to our homemade papyrus paper and will paint them in authentic Egyptian colour choices

Year Four

Year 4 have had a fantastic week of learning, full of creativity, deep thinking, and new skills!

What we have learnt about this week...

In English, the children explored persuasive writing by crafting letters to F. W. de Klerk, urging him to end apartheid. They thought carefully about fairness and justice, considering how powerful words can bring about change. It was inspiring to see their empathy and reasoning shine through their writing.

In Maths, we began our work on multiplication, focusing on strategies for multiplying by 3. The children enjoyed spotting patterns and using these to solve problems, building a strong foundation for future learning.

For RE, we started our new unit on the Bible. The children designed imaginative and thoughtful covers for a Bible, reflecting on what makes it special and meaningful in people’s lives.

We also had a visitor in class who helped us practise using our iPads successfully for learning. The children were excited to discover new ways to use technology to support their work and enhance their creativity.

What we will learn about next week:

In English, we will continue our work on Journey to Jo’burg by writing a continuation of the narrative. This will give the children an opportunity to develop their storytelling skills and explore character emotions in more depth.

In Maths, we will keep working on multiplication and explore a range of strategies to strengthen understanding and fluency.

In RE, we will look at the different types of writing found in the Bible and discuss why these styles are important.

On Friday, we are looking forward to India Day, which promises to be an exciting day of learning and celebration!

Year Five

We’ve had a busy and exciting week of learning!

What we have learnt about this week...

Maths:
The children have been working on equivalent fractions and have practised converting improper fractions into mixed numbers. They are becoming much more confident with these new skills.

English:
We brought our class text The Boy at the Back of the Class to life through role-play. The children acted out key scenes, wrote dialogues to match, and began gathering rich vocabulary to help them describe playground settings in future writing.

RE:
We explored why Christians celebrate Christmas and discussed the different traditions people follow during this special season.

Art:
The class completed their artwork by adding detailed drawings to the prints they created earlier, imagining what technology might look like in the future.

History:
We investigated the significance of the Sutton Hoo discovery and practised making deductions from historical sources—just like real historians!

Computing:
The children thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with sound in Scratch, creating their own simple music pieces.

What we will learn about next week:

English:
We’ll be using all the wonderful vocabulary we’ve gathered to write detailed and imaginative playground setting descriptions. The children will then begin combining these with dialogue to create engaging scene writing.

Maths:
Our fraction work continues as we learn to:

  • Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions

  • Compare and order fractions less than 1

  • Compare and order fractions greater than 1

  • Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator

Geography:
The children will present their recommendations for the best locations in the UK to base the families in our class scenarios, using the research they have carried out.

Science:
We will begin our new topic on Forces, starting with key ideas about pushes, pulls, and how objects move.

Year Six

The children have been really focused this week and worked hard across the curriculum as well as their assessments in reading, maths, spelling and grammar.

What we have learnt about this week...

This week, the children have had their second set of SATs assessments.  The Year 6 team are in the process of marking the children’s papers but already we can see that so many of them have made great process from their baseline assessments back in September.  The results of the maths SATs will have an impact on the Tuesday after-school booster classes; we will email those children who no longer need to attend these groups and, at the same time, email the parents of the next set of children that we would like to invite to the second wave of booster classes.

Aside from their SATs assessments, the children have begun their new shared reading book – The Last Bear by Hannah Gold.  This text is also the focus of our English lessons this half term and the children have started to plan and write a descriptive setting of the Arctic Circle.  In cookery this week, class 6B decorated some biscuits.  They really enjoyed choosing the toppings and were keen to take their biscuits home to share.  In maths, the children have practised finding a fraction of amounts including those within word problems.

What we will learn about next week:

Next week in English, the children will proof read and edit their descriptive settings before moving on to exploring the features of powerful speeches.  In maths, the children will move on to their new topic which is units of measure.  In our science lesson next week, the children will investigate the effects of a battery on the brightness of a bulb, whilst in R.E. the children will investigate the religious use of colour in expressing concepts.  We are approaching the end of our history topic about the Victorians during which the children will examine a range of changes in society from the beginning to the end of the Victorian era.
