25/26 - Spring 2, Week 5

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

And just like that, we have reached the end of another action-packed and lively term at William Ford! I am sure everyone is very much looking forward to the Easter holidays and the considerably nicer weather that should be waiting for us on the other side.

It has been a wonderful final week. Year 4 led us in a moving and beautifully performed re-enactment of the Easter story at our Easter Celebration event - you can read more about this below. Year 4 have also been busy with Young Marketeers, where they are learning about running a school garden, as well as enjoying a Scandinavian food tasting session. Quite the week!

A note for parents: speaking to children about incidents

We have recently noticed an increase in concerns being raised by parents about their children being spoken to in connection with incidents at school. We wanted to take a moment to explain our approach.

In the vast majority of cases, when we speak to a child about an incident, it is simply because we are trying to gather information in order to resolve the situation fairly and quickly - not because we suspect that child of any wrongdoing. In order to keep our school safe and to resolve any disputes between children calmly and effectively, we do sometimes need to speak to a range of children, including those who may have witnessed something.

If your child is directly involved in an incident - whether as someone who has been hurt or as someone who has behaved inappropriately - we will always contact you. However, if your child is simply someone who may have seen or heard something, we may speak with them without notifying you directly, as this is often just one of several conversations we need to have.

We are really grateful that the vast majority of our parents trust us in how we handle behaviour, and we want to reassure you that our approach is always calm, fair, and focused on doing right by all the children involved.

Finally...

We hope you all have a truly wonderful Easter holiday. We look forward to welcoming you back on Tuesday, 14th April, when we will be celebrating our School Values Day.

He is risen — Happy Easter from all of us at William Ford!

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

The Easter break can be an exciting time for many children and families; however we know this is not the case for all. Some children may feel anxious, worried or overwhelmed because things are not in their normal routine. ChildLine has many great resources and actives to help children who are feeling this way, which they can access for free at home. Here is the link to their website:

The Twins as St Claires by Enid Blyton

I am enjoying this book. It is the first in a series in the collection. It is fun to read; my favourite character is Pat because she always says silly and funny comments.

Mrs Freeland recommended this book to me and I think others should read it too!

Year Three

Year 3 have had a busy week in the lead up to the end of the half term.

What we have learnt about this week

In English, children planned and wrote a recount of events from chapter 7 in the book Here Comes Hercules. In maths we concluded the work on perimeter by measuring different shapes in mm and cm and finding the perimeter. In RE, children completed their assessment on Judaism before learning about Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Children created story boards, diary entries and drama freeze frames to recall the main events. In geography, children witnessed the volcano on their islands erupt and discussed the aftermath of the event.

What we will learn about next week

After the Easter break, children will begin to read The Wild Robot. Having been on a year group trip to the cinema to watch the film, children will now read the text and explore a range of descriptive writing. In maths, children will begin to learn about fractions. They will identify fractions as equal parts and recognised unit and non-unit fractions of shapes. In RE, children will begin the new unit on Jesus and Buddha. In history children will continue to learn about Ancient Greece. In Summer 1 on Friday’s year 3 will participate in workshops lead by the Royal Ballet.

The year 3 team wish you all a happy and restful Easter.

Year Four

t has been an eventful week in Year 4! The children have worked very hard.

What we have learnt about this week

This week the children have looked at converting mixed numbers to improper fractions in maths. In English, the children were able to plan and write their own shape poems. In Geography, the children tasted Scandinavian food. They were given a selection of different foods to try. There was a selection of rye bread, meatballs, potato pancakes, sweets and pickles. In RE children continued to learn about the easter story and delivered a fantastic performance to their parents and carers. The children have also taken part in a gardening workshop.

What we will learn about next week

After half term, children will continue to work through their electricity unit. They will be identifying open and closed switches in science and will be recognising that a switch opens and closes a circuit. In Computing children will continue learning about their weather topic and continue to produce their own spreadsheet based on their research. The children will be starting their new topic in Geography learning all about the rainforest.

It’s been an amazing week, and we are incredibly proud of all the children. They have worked incredible hard these past two terms, and we are looking forward to another productive term of great learning. Well done to all the children for their fantastic effort in the Easter production. Wishing you all a lovely Easter.

Please remind children to bring in empty plastic bottles for our science unit.

Year Five

We have had a great week in our lead up to the Easter Holidays.

What we have learnt about this week

In maths, we have concluded our topic on fractions, decimals and percentages. We have been problem solving with percentages and comparing fractions, decimals and percentages.

We completed writing our rap poems this week looking at a simile rap. We have now performed our raps and published our poems for a Year 5 anthology.

In addition to this, we have come to the end of our shared reading book ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ so we have found out whether our predictions for the ending were correct.

Just in time for Easter, we have also concluded our R.E. unit about salvation and the Easter story, and our history topic on Anglo-Saxons and Vikings.

Swimming sessions on Tuesdays have now concluded for Year 5 and will not continue after Easter.

What we will learn about next week

Next term we will begin our new maths topic commencing with area and perimeter.

In English we start a new exciting unit of work following our theatre visit based on the ‘Lion King’.

In history and geography, we will be researching and finding out about Baghdad 900AD and rivers.

We wish everyone a happy and peaceful Easter.

Year Six

Year 6, have had a phenomenal week!

What we have learnt about this week

In English this week, we’ve begun writing our own versions of The Highwayman narrative poem. The children have made a fantastic start, with many producing thoughtful and imaginative pieces that really capture the atmosphere of the original.

In Maths, we’ve been focusing on plotting coordinates and exploring translations. The children have shown increasing confidence when working across all four quadrants and applying their understanding to problem-solving tasks.

Alongside this, we’ve spent time revisiting key content in Reading, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar and Maths, using previous papers to support revision. This has helped ensure all children feel as prepared and confident as possible ahead of SATs.

It’s been a brilliant week overall, and the children have worked incredibly hard. They should all be very proud of their efforts and can now look forward to a well-deserved break.

What we will learn about next week

Next term in Year 6, we will begin developing our short story writing skills in English, focusing on crafting engaging narratives with clear structure, descriptive language and well-developed characters.

We will also be learning about area, perimeter and volume in Maths, building on our understanding of measurement and applying these skills to a range of problem-solving activities.

As part of our RE lessons, we will begin our new topic, Worldviews, where we will explore a range of different perspectives and beliefs, encouraging thoughtful discussion and reflection.

In Science, we will continue our learning on living things and their habitats, deepening our understanding of classification and how different organisms adapt to their environments.

We look forward to welcoming Year 6 back after a long and well-deserved Easter break, ready for another busy and exciting term

Each week, staff select two children from each class who have shown effort and commitment to upholding an aspect of our school vision, shown at the bottom of the page. Congratulations to this week’s ‘stars of the week’ for their tremendous endeavours!
