25/26 - Summer 1, Week 1

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

Welcome back! We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable Easter holiday, spending time with friends and family and celebrating the heart of our Christian faith - the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Straight back in

The children have returned with real energy this week, and we wasted no time in getting into the Easter story through our School Values Day. It was a wonderful reminder of just how deeply our school values are rooted in the events of Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Our values of service, forgiveness, repentance, hope, and humility are not simply words on a wall - each one is drawn directly from the story of Jesus' death and resurrection, and each one was lived out by a different person in that story. We reflected on the repentance of the criminal on the cross, the humility of the Roman centurion in acknowledging what he had witnessed, and the extraordinary hope made possible through Jesus' sacrifice. These are values we believe matter deeply - not just within our school, but in how we all live our lives, whatever our age.

Welcome to Mrs Riach

We are delighted to welcome Mrs Riach to the William Ford staff team this term. Many of the children will already know her from her years at Village Infant School, and we are thrilled that she is now joining us as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant. She will be covering classes and supporting small groups across the school, working predominantly in Year 3. Please do join me in giving her a very warm William Ford welcome!

A term to look forward to

The summer term is, I will happily admit, one of my favourite times of the school year. The weather improves, the days are longer, and the calendar is full of things to enjoy. Coming up we have our Year 5 residential to Trewern Outdoor Centre next week, where pupils will be developing their independence and resilience in a wonderful outdoor setting. In June, our annual day trip to France takes place - always a highlight. And, of course, FordFest awaits us at the end of term.

We really are blessed with so much to look forward to. Here's to a brilliant summer term.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

There have been a number of issue and arguments between children this week regarding fidget and sensory toys. Please do not allow you child to bring in a fidget or sensory toy, unless this has been agreed with Mrs Beech, Mr Buckingham or your child's class teacher.

New App for better communication.

We know how frustrating it can be looking for emails and texts from schools, so we have linked with ReachMoreParents to create our very own app.

You will receive an email from William Ford CofE Junior School <noreply@weduc.co.uk> in the next few days with instructions.

This will tell you where to find the app and how to register your account. It will connect to your child via your email address.

We have been very fortunate to have a large amount of books donated to us, these range from Diary of the Wimpy Kid, Beast Quests, Roald Dahl. Over the next week the books will appear in the library for children to enjoy as part of their home reading.

Remember to look after them and return then once they have been read. Please make sure books are returned to the library once read and not take more than one book at a time.

Year Three

It has been a lovely start to the summer term. The children have come back ready to learn and the sun has even made the odd appearance which has allowed for the field to be open at lunchtimes!

What we have learnt about this week

The week started with Values Day and year three focused on our school value of service.  They looked at the life of Mother Teresa and  how people serve each other - through everyday life, their jobs and charity.  The children then drew a lovely picture of people serving others.

In English this week, we have started a new book called The Wild Robot.  The pupils were very excited as we have already been to the cinema to watch the film.  We have looked at how the book begins and the descriptive language used.  The children then wrote their own amazing setting descriptions for a stormy sea setting.

In maths, the children have been looking at fractions and finding fractions of shapes and quantities.

The Royal Ballet have started an exciting dance unit with the children for PE which will continue until the end of this half term.  See the website for a news article on this.

We have started a new RE unit where the pupils will look at Christianity and Buddhism and in particular how Jesus and Buddha influenced people to think.

The children have continued with their Ancient Greeks unit and have looked at the defence tactic used called the phalanx – ask your children what they can remember about this!

What we will learn about next week

Next week in English we look in more detail at Roz the robot and the pupils will write a description of her.

In maths the children will continue to develop their knowledge of fractions.

In geography the children will begin to explore coasts in the new unit.

In computing, the pupils will continue to work on their trailers for Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx.

Year Four

It’s been a fantastic start to the summer term for Year 4. The children have returned with a positive attitude and have been working very hard.

What we have learnt about this week

This week, the children have taken part in Value’s Day, learning about the value of Hope. They created a letter to their future self about their hopes, dreams and goals as well as a Hope mobile / rainbow for our local community.

In English this week we have started our new book ‘The Explorer’ where the children have been exploring descriptive language and using this to write a setting description.

The children have continued to explore electricity in science and this week worked in pairs to create a circuit with a switch.

In Geography the children have started their new topic ‘Rainforests’  where they have located them on a map as well as researching what can be found.

What we will learn about next week

Next week we will continue to work on Fractions within our maths lessons.

During English we will be reading more of our book and planning to write a dramatic opening. The children will then be editing their openings by improving their sentence structures, using a variety of vocabulary.

In our RE lessons, we will continue to focus of world views and look at what marriage is and why people marry.

During History the children will begin to explore the Romans.

We hope you have a lovely well rested weekend!

Year Five

It has been a great start to term, in Year 5, with lots of new units, such as our Lion King unit in English.

What we have learnt about this week

We began the week with a special themed Values day, where each year group focused on a specific value. Year 5 took a deep dive into Repentance and Forgiveness.

This week in English, we have been looking at character description, exploring the individual characters from the Lion King.

In maths, we started our new unit on position and direction, focusing on perimeter and area.

In Geography, we have been finishing off our unit on North America.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, we will be continuing our unit of position and direction, in maths, but moving onto angles.

In English, we will be beginning with summaries and then starting to plan for our descriptions for our sequels to the Lion King.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Year Six

t’s been a great start to the summer term for year 6 this week. The children have come back and have worked incredibly hard.

What we have learnt about this week

This week, the children have taken part in Value’s day, specifically learning about the value of Humility. They created their own comic book strip and then made it come to life using iMovie. The rest of this week has been a focus on our SATs practice and the children have practiced their Reading, GPS and Arithmetic during the week. In Maths, the children have been learning about the area and perimeter of different shapes including compound shapes.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, we will continue practising and revising for the SATs tests during our Maths lessons and English lessons.

In English, we will also continue to finish and edit our stories based on the Highwayman. The children will be editing our stories by varying our sentence structures, using figurative language and using a variety of powerful vocabulary.

In RE, we will be starting our new topic called ‘Worldviews’. Throughout this topic, the pupils will be learning about the key beliefs, practices and values from the major world religions.

In Science, we are continuing our topic of Living things and Habitats and learning about how scientists classify different species.

In Geography and History, we will be starting our new topic about our local area of Dagenham.

Well done everyone in Year 6. Keep working hard and putting your best effort into your learning.

Each week, staff select two children from each class who have shown effort and commitment to upholding an aspect of our school vision, shown at the bottom of the page. Congratulations to this week’s ‘stars of the week’ for their tremendous endeavours!
