25/26 - Summer 1, Week 5

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

What a week to celebrate. After weeks of hard work, dedication and no small amount of perseverance, our Year 6 pupils have completed their SATs exams, and we could not be prouder of every single one of them.

Completing these exams takes real courage and real effort, and our Year 6 children have shown both in abundance. We hope they thoroughly enjoyed their party on Thursday afternoon and their cinema trip on Friday; a small token of appreciation for everything they have put in, though no reward could fully reflect the hard work that has gone into this. The results will be what they will be, and we are at peace with that. We trust, as we always do, that all things are in God's hands. What we know for certain is that these children have given their best, and that is everything we could ever ask. A huge thank you also to the staff across the school who worked tirelessly to keep children calm, prepared and supported throughout. It has been a real team effort.

Collective Worship: Noah and Daily Bread

Our collective worship has continued its series on heroes of faith, this week focusing on Noah, and we have also moved on to the next line of the Lord's Prayer: give us this day our daily bread. On the surface it sounds like a simple request, but it is worth pausing on. This line is a prayer of trust. It does not ask for a year's supply or a lifetime of security; it asks for today's bread, today's provision, today's needs met. Noah did not know how long the rain would last or when dry land would appear. He simply trusted, one day at a time. That is the invitation in this line of the prayer too: to let go of anxiety about everything that might or might not happen, and to trust that today's needs will be met. For our children, that might mean not worrying about next week's test or next year's class. For all of us, it is a reminder that we are held, day by day, and that is enough.

Looking Ahead

Next week is the final week before half-term, and school finishes on Friday at the usual time. As always, we have plenty planned and will share more as the week unfolds. We wish everyone a restful and enjoyable half-term break when it comes.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame

This is a fun and exciting book about a mole who stops his spring cleaning and goes on a picnic with his friends. I enjoyed reading this book because it is funny in parts and has lots of long words I liked to learn.

Year Three

Another great week of learning from the year three pupils.

Please remember that the class ballet performances are on Friday 22nd May and you are all invited!  Please make your way straight to the sports hall for the time of your pupil’s class performance: 3M is at 10:20am, 3BL is at 11:40am and 3F and Lighthouse pupils are at 2:10pm.

What we have learnt about this week

In English, pupils have practised using inverted commas for direct speech which they then developed to write their own conversations between two characters in The Wild Robot book.

In maths, the pupils have been finding fractions of a set along with reasoning about fractions.

In RE, the pupils have looked at two of Buddha’s stories and chose one of them to write about the meaning.

The pupils have used their planning and research to begin to construct their castles in DT.

In history, the pupils have learned about significant philosophers.

In science, the pupils had fun exploring magnetic materials and creating their own magnetic puzzles.

In French, pupils learned the numbers 1-12 and how to ask someone’s age and how to respond.

In computing the pupils reviewed their book trailers.

What we will learn about next week

The pupils will be planning, writing and editing an alternative ending to when Brightbill leaves the island in the story of The Wild Robot.

In maths the pupils have started a new unit on shape where they will look at different angle and turns.

In geography, the pupils will learn about the seas around the UK.

The pupils will complete their RE assessment by working in groups to write a story with a meaning based on what they have learned throughout the unit.

The pupils will continue and complete with the construction of their castles in DT.

Year Four

Year 4 have worked hard again this week throughout all lessons.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in English the children have taken on the role of a character to re-enact a chapter from our book ‘The Explore’ where they worked in small groups acting out their feelings, emotions focusing on the use of speech to create a conversation.

During maths the children have been continuing their work on decimals.

In geography, the children focused who lives in the rainforests and how they survive.

In RE the children have continued to look at marriage and explore the roles and responsibilities within families and why these are important.

What we will learn about next week

Next week during maths the children will be looking at how to partition decimals, comparing decimals and ordering decimals.

For history the children will be looking at the motive behind why they should invade Britian, where they will be writing a persuasive speech. This will lead them into a drama lesson where they will explore who was successful between Caesar and Claudius. They will then be learning out about Boudicca and why she was a powerful woman during Roman Britain ready for our trip to Colchester Castle.

In RE the children will be creating a family crest after looking at different family types and understand that love and commitment look different.

During Science the children will be investigating tooth decay. They will be setting up their own experiments with eggs predicting which liquids will cause the eggshell to decay the quickest.

In DT the children will be looking at different torches where they will begin to think about a design for their own.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

Year Five

It has been another wonderful week in Year 5 with lots of excitement and learning!

What we have learnt about this week

This week in Year 5, pupils have been learning about angles in Maths – learning how to use a protractor, whilst also learning about the types of angles and how to find missing angles.

In English, the pupils have planned and begun their narrative writing, for their unit on the Lion King, where they are writing a sequel to the Lion King!

In Science, we are coming to an end of our topic on Properties of materials and the pupils have been working on a project, where they have been designing and constructing a Eco-friendly, child friendly Energy drink (hydration drink), suitable for children. This has been a really fun exercise, and the pupils have really enjoyed it and have had some fantastic results!

What we will learn about next week

Next week, we will be completing our science unit, by evaluating our energy drink bottle design and ingredients.

In maths, we will be looking at coordinates and translation.

In RE, we will be continuing our unit on Islam, looking at the practices of different muslims.

In Geography, we will be exploring time zones in North America.

We hope you have a lovely weekend!

Year Six

Well done to all of Year 6 for their amazing hard work this week whilst they completed their SATs. We are incredibly proud of all their hard work and effort as well as seeing them make so much progress throughout the year. Well done to everyone again.

What we have learnt about this week

This week, even with the SATs, we continued to learn a variety of subjects such as RE and Science. In RE, we were comparing the differences and similarities of different worldviews ranging from Islam, Christianity and Humanism.

In Science, we continued recording our results from our mouldy bread investigation where the children noticed that the bread in the damper conditions, grew more mould over the bread.

This week we are also going to the cinema as well as holding our class parties in celebration for completing SATs.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, we will continue to complete our Science and learn about specific scientists involved with creating classification keys. We will also be creating classification keys as well.

In Art, we will plan our final art piece inspired by a specific artist we have been learning about and the children will create their own piece of art in that style.

We also have two trips to Eastbrookend Country park on Monday and Wednesday. Please make sure the children are dressed appropriately for this.

Each week, staff select two children from each class who have shown effort and commitment to upholding an aspect of our school vision, shown at the bottom of the page. Congratulations to this week’s ‘stars of the week’ for their tremendous endeavours!
