25/26 - Summer 2, Week 1

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

Welcome back after what we hope was a restful half term, and an enjoyable one in what turned out to be some rather beautiful weather. We are now into the final stretch of the year, and it is going to be a good one. Year 6, this is your last half term with us; we intend to make it a memorable one. Already this week, those children moving on to Dagenham Park met with their Head of Year 7, which was a brilliant opportunity to ask her questions, hear what to expect and begin to feel genuinely ready for the next chapter. We are proud of every one of them.

Community Month June is Community Month at William Ford, and across the coming weeks every class will be taking part in some form of social action, giving something back to the community around us. We do this every year and it never fails to inspire us; the kindness and creativity our children bring to it is something to behold. We will share details of each class's activity as the month unfolds. One of the highlights this year will be the launch of the Lighthouse Community Café, which has been in the planning for some time and is almost ready to share with you. More details to follow very soon.

Ford Fest International: Tuesday 14th July Parents will have received a letter from us earlier this week about this year's Ford Fest, and we wanted to share the details here too. Ford Fest is back this summer with a pupil-inspired upgrade; our children asked for a chance to celebrate their national heritage and culture, and we thought that was a wonderful idea. On the afternoon of Tuesday 14th July we are hosting Ford Fest International: a celebration of the extraordinary mix of cultures, countries and communities that make William Ford the school it is. We are planning food stalls, activities and a real sense of occasion. If you are able to prepare a national dish, a family favourite, or something that represents where you are from, we would love to include it. If you can prepare food on a larger scale for everyone to enjoy, even better. If your child has national dress or clothing that represents their country, we would encourage them to wear it on the day. As always, Ford Fest raises money that goes directly back into the experiences and provision we offer our pupils. If you can help in any way, please contact Sarah Gladden via the school office. We cannot wait.

Collective Worship: Heroes of Faith and the Spiritual Realm Our collective worship has begun a new chapter this week on Heroes of Faith, and we were delighted to welcome Mrs Hoepelman, who spoke to the children about Abraham from the book of Genesis; a man who stepped out in faith without knowing where he was going, trusting simply that God was with him. It was a wonderful introduction to what promises to be a rich series. We also welcomed colleagues from Dagenham Parish Church, who began a new session with us looking at the spiritual realm, exploring from Genesis 3 how temptation works and how we can recognise and resist it. These are big, important ideas, and our children engaged with them with real maturity and curiosity.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

The pupils have started a new art unit called ‘Sculptures’. In the first lesson they have looked at different sculptures and learned how to use 2D shapes to create 3D structures.

What we will learn about next week

In English, the pupils will revisit subordinating conjunctions and the correct use of a and an.

On Tuesday, the children took a coach to Colchester Castle where they were given a guided tour of the castle. They also completed lots of fun activities in their workshop.

In DT, the children have been able to construct their own torches and will move on to evaluating their electrical torch.

In RE, the pupils discussed what makes a strong marriage. They then went on to complete an activity where they had to create a 3D model using Lego where each part of the structure represented a marriage value.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, the children will be completing their Maths unit, and they will be calculating and solving problems with money.

In RE, the pupils will be moving on to a new unit called The Fall. In this unit, they will be learning about the story of Adam & Eve, and they will be working in groups to retell the story.
