Spring 2 - Week 6

{alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

IMPORTANT - start of school day

We are tightening up on start times.  Please ensure your child is in class ready to start learning by 8:55am AT THE LATEST.  Our gates open from 8:45am to allow children to make their way to class.  We are aware of some children who leave their parents then make their way to the park/shops. Please do speak to your child about this.  We too will be contacting parents where we discover this is happening.

William Ford Junior School - School Day (williamfordschool.co.uk)

Playground update

It is nearly finished!  Despite the poor weather, our playground builders have continued to work hard to get our new sports pitch laid!  This is looking fantastic and I cannot wait to share pictures after the Easter holiday of the pupils enjoying this new facility - all part of our efforts to combat childhood obesity and to promote a love of sport.

France trip - 20th/21st April 2023

Not long to go now.  I am certainly very excited about this trip!  Parents/carers we are just ironing out a couple of minor issues with the tour company regarding the itinerary then we will be in touch again with more information.

Autism awareness - Sycamore Trust

On Tuesday we had a special assembly led by the Sycamore Trust.  Three of the individuals presenting have autism, and it was fascinating for staff and pupils to hear how they interpret the world and how best we can all communicate with autistic children and adults.    Please see below for our news article about this fantastic experience.

Easter Celebration Breakfast

It was wonderful to see so many parents joining us for breakfast as Year Four led us through the Easter story whilst the choir performed for us.  At William Ford we love to host an event and, despite us having to relocate indoors due to the weather, it was still a very special occasion for us to enjoy as a school family.  A huge thank you to everybody involved.

Values Day

And as if this week had not been busy enough, on Thursday we had our Values Day.  This annual event gave us a chance to reflect upon the values we consider to be important as a school, all taken from Jesus' last few days on earth before his death and glorious resurrection.  Throughout the day we looked at the values of service (Year Three), hope (Year Four), repentance and forgivenesses (Year Five) and humility (Year Six). We looked at where these values were displayed in the story and considered how we can display them in our daily lives.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend and a blessed Easter break.

Mr. David Huntingford

John 11:25-26

25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

On Tuesday, the Sycamore Trust came in to give a special assembly as it is Autism Acceptance Week. The children enjoyed listening to 3 autistic young people give their first-hand accounts of what it is like to live with autism.

They also shared helpful tips to all children and adults on the best way to support a child or adult with autism.

If you would like more information about how you can access this free service, visit their website: https://www.sycamoretrust.org.uk

We have been lucky enough to take part in a competition that was open to all schools in the UK. We have been updating the 'Big Walk and Wheel' website with information about how pupils get to school.

I am pleased to say that at the end of the school day yesterday we were ranking 57th out of 2772 schools registered, and 1st Place out of the registered schools in LBBD.

Hopefully we will move further on the national chart once today's figures have been calculated.

Well done to all pupils.

I have recently read 'Johnny Ball: Accidental Football Genius and loved it! It is a very interesting book about a boy named Johnny, his family are very good at football, but he is not. He goes to football trials and is chosen to be the assistant manager. As you read the book you find out whether he will help the team to win and fix their problems.

Year Three

What a busy week. Year Three have been planning and writing their own newspaper reports, based on an incident involving a wild animal in Calgary, Canada. They have thought of appropriate headlines and have thought carefully about what the eyewitnesses would have to say. In maths, we have continued our work on fractions including ordering non-unit fractions and the whole.

On Thursday, the children enjoyed our Values Day looking at service and how they can serve others in school, at home and in the wider community. We made crispy cakes which the children were asked to give to someone else. This was so they could see that it is sometimes challenging to make sacrifices.

We have looked at the Easter story and hope that the importance of Jesus' sacrifice helps the children to understand how to serve others. We hope that you have a peaceful Easter.

Year 4

This week, many of the Year Four children took part in our end of term Easter production that showed the events leading up to Jesus' crucifixion.  The singing from the choir sounded fantastic, and the actors put on an amazing performance.  Thank you to the many parents who came to watch the performance.  The children have completed their English unit by researching and writing a report describing apartheid in South Africa whilst in maths they have continued learning about mixed numbers as part of their fractions unit.  The children have also completed their science unit of work based on states of matter and in geography they have completed their study of countries within Europe. Thank you for your continued support, and we hope you all have a restful Easter break ready for the children to return fully refreshed for the summer term.

Year Five

We have made it to the end of the term! Year 5 have been working super hard this week with their learning. In maths, we have been looking at percentages and converting between percentages, decimals and fractions. The children have shown great understanding with this. In English, the children have written raps about something they are passionate about and have performed these to the class. Some children even composed a beat! Following on from this, for Values Day, the children planned a rap about forgiveness and repentance. In RE, we have now finished our unit on the Gospels and the children have reflected on the phrase 'What Would Jesus Do?' and have thought about how their can show generosity to others. 5A have been involved with a community art project this half-term and their work will be displayed in Dagenham's 'Past, Present and Future' exhibitions. If you would be interested in viewing their work please visit artcatcher.co.uk to find out more information. The Year Five team hope you have a restful Easter break, and we look forward to welcoming the children back on Tuesday 18th April.

Year Six

Year 6 have focused on shape this week in maths. Children have measured and classified angles, have found missing angles in triangles and quadrilaterals, as well as identifying parts of a circle. After the holidays children will explore drawing shapes and the nets of 3D shapes. In English, children became newspaper reporters, reporting on the events which occurred in the Highwayman poem and explored the language and structure of newspaper reports. The children will use this knowledge to write their own newspaper report. In Science, children explored how nutrients and water are transported around the body, identifying and explaining the function of the different parts of the body. In PSHE, children learnt about what it means to be emotionally healthy and reflected on their emotions and strategies which can be used to support them. Children have worked hard this term completing their revision homework, we have provided children with book 2 to continue over the holidays.
