Dear parents and carers,

We have had much to celebrate this week, and with our Year 6 Leavers' Production and Ford Fest International both taking place next week, there is still more to come.

New Website
We are delighted to share that our brand new school website has finally gone live. You can find it at the usual address: www.williamfordschool.co.uk. We are really pleased with how it looks and believe it is significantly easier to navigate and find the information you need. That said, we have only just launched, and you will notice that a number of the images are currently generic stock photos that do not reflect our school. We are working through these now and replacing them with our own, and this will be updated very soon. Bear with us; the finished article will be well worth it, and we look forward to using it to share everything that has been happening this term.

Silver Rights Respecting School Award
We are thrilled to share that William Ford has been awarded Silver: Rights Aware status by UNICEF UK, following a rigorous assessment process and a detailed evidence pack submitted by our team. A huge thank you to Mrs Buckingham for leading on this so capably, and to every member of staff and every pupil who played their part.

The Silver: Rights Aware award is granted by UNICEF UK to schools that show good progress towards embedding children's rights in their policies, practice and ethos. In practical terms, it means that the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is actively woven into how we teach, how we treat one another and how decisions are made across our school. Children develop a moral framework based on equality and respect that lasts a lifetime, growing into engaged, responsible members of society, and they become ambassadors for rights, taking part in campaigns and activities to bring about change. We are incredibly proud of this recognition and look forward to continuing the journey towards Gold.

Transition
It has been wonderful to welcome Year 2 children from Village Infants this week, giving them the chance to come and find out more about William Ford ahead of joining us in September. We have also had transition sessions across the school, with all children having the opportunity to meet their new teacher and see their new classroom. A number of children have been told their new classroom is not yet ready to visit, and we wanted to explain why. Significant building works are taking place over the summer holidays to develop our provision further, particularly for children with additional needs. Certain areas of the school are therefore not yet accessible, but everything will be ready and waiting when the children return in September.

Next Week: Year 6 Production and Ford Fest International
Next week is going to be a special one. Our Year 6 children will be performing their Leavers' Production, and we cannot wait to see everything they have worked so hard on come together. We also have Ford Fest International, our celebration of the wonderful mix of cultures, countries and communities that make William Ford what it is. Children are encouraged to wear clothing that represents their culture and heritage, and we would love to have food from around the world on sale on the day. If you are able to contribute a dish from your country or culture, please do contact the school office. The more the merrier.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Groosham Grange by Anthony Horowitz

The main character David has been expelled from lots of different schools, so his dad sends him to a spooky school. David doesn’t like the school, so he tries to find different ways to leave. I enjoy reading this book because it’s full of mystery.

Year Three

Year Four

Another very productive week for our Year Three pupils.  They also all had the opportunity to spend the morning with their new teachers on Friday.

What we have learnt about this week

In English, the pupils have completed their work on The Boy Who Grew Dragons and have been focussing on using adverbials of manner as well as fronted adverbials.

In maths, the pupils have been learning about mass and capacity.

In science, pupils have been continuing their work on their investigations looking at what plants need to grow to be healthy. They have completed with their results and conclusion.

In geography, the pupils have looked at data for the town of Walton and produced tables and graphs through the computing unit.

In RE, the pupils have completed the unit on Sikhism by creating pages for a class book.  They were able to choose what they present on their page based on what they have learned such as information based on the wise words or Sikh symbols.

What we will learn about next week

In English, the pupils will complete the grammar work they have started this week.

In science, the pupils will learn about seed dispersal.

In geography, the pupils will compare maps of Dagenham and Walton on the Naze as part of their ongoing geography unit.

In maths, the pupils will revise all four operations through arithmetic lessons and to prepare them for the transition to Year Four. They will also complete some work on statistics specifically looking at pictograms and tally charts

Year 4 have had another fantastic week working hard in all areas of the curriculum.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in maths the children have worked extremely hard exploring triangles, quadrilaterals and polygons and have now completed their unit on shape.

In History we have continued our work on The Romans and the children took on the role of an archaeologist where they explored, used a variety of sources and thought about what life was like in Pompeii before and after the volcanic eruption.

On Thursday the children took part in a range of sporting activities for sports day. Well done to every single child for being enthusiastic and showing great sportsmanship to their peers.

On Friday the children had the opportunity to meet and spend the morning with their new year 5 teacher.

In science we have started to research and find out more information about the local wildlife and plants in preparation for our park visit to collect data.

What we will learn about next week

In maths we will be moving onto Time. The children will be looking at hours, minutes, seconds, converting between analogue and digital and converting to and from a 24hour clock.

In History we will be completing our final lesson and looking at the legacy to understand the reasons for the Roman retreat and desertion of Britannia.

In art the children will be exploring and completing a waxed resit of their own pattern design.

Our RE unit will conclude with a lesson on the Prophets and then an assessment for the children to show their understanding of this units learning.

The children will also have the opportunity on Monday morning to watch the Year 6 leavers performance.

Please remember that Ford Fest is taking part for your child on Tuesday afternoon starting at 1.30 pm and finishing at 4pm.

We hope you have a lovely weekend!

Year Five

Year Six

Year 5 pupils have had another fantastic week and have continued to impress us with their enthusiasm, resilience and hard work across the curriculum!

This week, we enjoyed a wonderful visit to Dagenham Park School for their Taster Day. The children represented William Ford brilliantly and took part enthusiastically in a range of activities, including Art, Science and Music. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to experience life at secondary school and try out some exciting new subjects.

We were also delighted with the success of Sports Day on Thursday. Despite the very warm weather, the children demonstrated excellent teamwork, determination and sportsmanship throughout the day. We were incredibly proud of their positive attitudes and willingness to give every event their best effort.

What we have learnt about this week

This week, the children have been editing and publishing their newspaper reports based on our class text, The Nowhere Emporium. They have carefully improved their work by checking punctuation, spelling and vocabulary before producing polished final versions. The finished reports have showcased the children's creativity and understanding of the features of newspaper writing.

In maths, we have been learning about converting units of measure. The children have converted between different metric units, including kilograms and grams, kilometres and metres, and millilitres and litres. They have also used their conversion skills to solve a range of practical reasoning and problem-solving questions.

In art, we have been studying architecture and exploring the features of different buildings. The children have investigated architectural designs before creating plans for their own house designs, carefully considering shape, structure and aesthetic appeal.

In science, we have continued learning about life cycles, exploring how living things grow, develop and reproduce throughout their lives.

What we will learn about next week

Next week will be our final week of Year 5, and we will be completing our learning across a number of subjects.

In English, the pupils will complete their work linked to The Nowhere Emporium and reflect on the writing skills they have developed throughout the unit.

In maths, we will finish our topic on converting units of measure, applying our knowledge to increasingly challenging reasoning and real-life problems.

In art, the children will complete their architecture projects, developing and refining their house designs before evaluating their final pieces.

In science, we will conclude our learning about life cycles, bringing together everything we have learnt about the stages of growth and development in living organisms.

As we approach the end of the school year, we would like to thank the children for their hard work and positive attitude. We are looking forward to celebrating all of their achievements during our final week together.

Well done to all of Year 6 for another fantastic week of learning and preparation. The children have worked incredibly hard and we are very proud of their enthusiasm, creativity and commitment.

Please remember the important Year 6 events coming up:

  • Year 6 Performance to Parents: Wednesday 15th July at 1:30pm

  • Year 6 Leavers’ Party: Thursday 16th July, 4:00pm–5:30pm

  • Year 6 Leavers’ Service: Monday 20th July at 2:00pm

What we have learnt about this week

This week, the children have been busy putting the finishing touches to their production, which they are very excited to share with their families next Wednesday at 1:30pm.

In Art, the children have been exploring photomontages. They took on the role of graphic designers and worked to a design brief to create a cityscape photomontage poster for a department store, using images representing different departments. The children thoroughly enjoyed this creative challenge and produced some imaginative and effective designs.

In RRSA, the children have continued to explore Article 27 of the UNCRC, focusing on the right to an adequate standard of living. They looked specifically at the importance of access to clean water and created a list of the different ways their families use water each day. They then researched water usage linked to these activities and calculated how much water their families consume. The results were quite surprising, and many children made personal pledges to think carefully about how they can reduce their water consumption.

As part of our visit to the Royal Courts of Justice today, each class took part in a mock trial based on a real-life court case. The children took on different roles and thoroughly enjoyed experiencing the legal process. It was a fantastic opportunity to visit such an impressive building while developing their knowledge and understanding of the UK justice system.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, the children will be busy performing their production for different year groups before delivering their final performance to their families.

The children will also begin preparing for their Leavers’ Service. Family members are warmly invited to join us on Monday 20th July at 2:00pm, when the children will lead a special service sharing their precious memories of their time at William Ford School, along with a selection of their favourite songs from collective worship over the years.

This will be a very special occasion and a wonderful way to celebrate the end of the children’s primary school journey. We hope that you are able to join us.
