Summer 1 - Week 4

{alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

Year Six SATS

These are finished and over!  I am extremely proud of the hard work of all of our pupils and how diligently they have worked over the past week.  These papers have now all been sent away for external marking hence it is important we now forget about these as it will be several weeks before the marks are available.  Our focus now moves to writing assessments but before that, it was wonderful to see the pupils enjoying a film and then an in class party as their reward after such a busy week!.

Parental behaviour

Every family would have received a letter from me earlier in the week regarding incidences of poor parental behaviour within the school grounds and local area.  Whilst this letter is only aimed at a small minority, I thank you for the support others have shown to the school and to everyone for addressing the concerns raised.

Cooking in the curriculum

Once again the school hall has been filled with wonderful aromas as Year Five continue their cookery DT unit (and one of our 11 experiences - learning to cook a meal). This time it was the turn of class 5H.

Parkview Care Home

Finally I am very proud that, as a school, we are active within our local community.  One such link we have is with Parkview Care Home where Emily, one of the residents, is celebrating her 100th birthday!  Emily was surprised by some of our Year Four pupils who presented cards and flowers.  From all of us here at William Ford, Happy Birthday Emily!

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Well done to all the year 6 pupils this week-you have all done so well and have made us all proud with how well you have managed.

It can be a stressful time of year for year 6 with SATS and secondary transition looming. Over the coming weeks, we will be working with individuals and classes to help make the move to secondary school as easy as possible.

Enjoy your well deserved break this weekend.

Brief reminder for parents

We do need children to ensure the children have their PE kits in school with them on days in which they have PE.

We have no spare items in school due to them not being returned. We would suggest that they have a PE kit left in school which is taken home either at the end of each week or half-term to be washed.

PE is an important part of the school curriculum.

I recommend 'Wonder' by R.J. Palacio this week. It is a great chapter book which teaches us that how you look shouldn't matter, and it is your personality that counts.

R.J. Palacio has also written a picture book based on same theme called 'We're all Wonders'.

Year Three

Despite being a shorter week, we have still completed such a lot of work in Year 3. We have concluded our fraction work by working out fractions of amounts which the children have found challenging but with determination we are beginning to see great improvement. Today we had a test to assess our knowledge and understanding of all of our fraction work to date. In English the children are continuing to enjoy our book 'Here Comes Hercules'. We have discussed character traits of a Greek god and have planned and written our own description of a Greek god. The children are continuing to develop their creativity by including effective similes and metaphors within their writing. We have enjoyed learning about the gods and goddesses of Ancient Greece in history this week and finding out their roles. Perhaps ask your child how many they can name.  The children have also been learning to count in French and have learnt a fun song to help with this.

Year 4

This week Year four have settled in well after the jubilations of the King's coronation festivities.

In maths, we started a new topic on decimals where were are starting to get acquainted with using place value cards to write numbers as decimals and as fractions. In English we have applied our research skills to plan and write our own information text based on Roman Britain. We used our prior learning to ensure that we follow the structure for writing an information text. In Science, we had an exciting and very informative lesson on the different parts of our digestive system and how each part works. In R.E., following on from our lesson on the Ten Commandments last week, we looked at different ways to ask for forgiveness and say sorry.

In history, we looked at the reasons why the Romans invaded Britain and the influence they had on British culture, infrastructure and society as a whole. We found it fascinating that we can find some of these Roman structures still standing today.

All of this information is just fuelling our excitement for our visit to Colchester Castle next week. We cannot wait!

Have a relaxing weekend!

Year Five

Year Five’s spellings this week consisted of the -cious and -tious word endings. The children learned to identify different words with these endings. They learned that these endings often indicate that a word is an adjective; that it describes a noun. In maths this week, we recapped and built on learning of angles, from previous years. We explored the fact that there are 360° in a full turn, and therefore 180° in half a turn, 90° in a quarter turn (or right angle) and 270° in a three-quarter turn. We used this knowledge and the language of clockwise and anticlockwise to describe turns, including in the context of compass directions and clocks. The children were also able to visually classify an angle as acute, obtuse or reflex by comparing them to right angles and straight lines and classifying angles numerically, for example, that 23° is an acute angle because it is less than 90°. Alongside our shared reading focus on Shakespeare’s comic play, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, the children learned about the language of this famous playwright, including his use of idioms. The children used their knowledge of Shakespearean language to write a short dialogue using examples of Shakespeare’s words and phrases. In History, the children were introduced to the history of ancient Baghdad. They learned some key historical facts to understand how Baghdad became an important city during the golden age of Islam including the Abbasid dynasty which ruled Baghdad during this time.

Year Six

Year 6 have been amazing this week, showing their maturity when sitting their SATs.  They have worked so hard to get to this point and we are all very proud of them. The tests are just an opportunity for them to show off the fantastic progress they have made during their time at William Ford.  We have all enjoyed the chance to have breakfast together and to start the day in the company of friends all week. We ended the week with a small party to celebrate their hard work.
On Monday, we will be going to Thriftwood to take part in some adventurous activities, followed by a week of normal lessons. In English, we will be focussing on editing previous work to make improvements and writing some persuasive letters.
