Summer 2 - Week 2

Dear parents and carers,

Internal School Provision for SEND pupils

I am delighted to share with parents that considerable building work will be taking place over the holidays to instal 'The Learning Zone.'  This will be a provision, under the direct management of the school, that will cater for academic and pastoral needs of some of our pupils who struggle to access the curriculum in class.  This provision, due to open in September 2023 in our sports hall complex, will be staffed by a fully qualified teacher working under the supervision of our experienced SENDCo.

I need to be clear that this is NOT an additional class within the school nor is it a behavioural drop in centre.  Pupils who require additional support will be timetabled to attend where they will access a curriculum similar to that within their classrooms but at a more suitable level.  They will still be under the care of their class teacher.  Only a possible 2-3 children will have the majority of their education provided for within The Learning Zone and even then, we will be aiming for them to rejoin their class for lessons such as art and PE.

Once fully operational, the school will inform parents whose children will spend some time working within this provision.  This will mainly be pupils who currently receive 1:1 support.  This provision will feature two classrooms - one for more formal learning and one for creative, a sensory room and a soft play area.  All very exciting!

William Ford Radio Station

It was wonderful to share with the pupils today that William Ford will soon have its own radio station!  The set-up, similar to that below, will allow pupils to play music and broadcast direct into the playground, around the school and even online via Soundcloud!  Not only does this open the door to a potential career for the future but also should develop pupil speech and language, self-confidence and articulation along with gaining further experience of using technology.  We also plan to utilise this technology within our lessons along with conducting interviews of staff, sports teams and the choir etc.  Full training will be given to those who are interested, come September!

BCA Radio is here! | Beamont Collegiate Academy

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Thank you to all the parents that attended the SEND coffee morning on Wednesday. It was great to be able to share all out exciting plans with you for next year and hear your feedback about the support your children are currently receiving.

If you missed this one, there will be another event in the autumn term.

In light of the hot weather, can we please remind you to ensure that your child has a water bottle in school that can be refilled throughout the day, a sun hat and sun cream applied before school.

If your child suffers from hay fever please ensure they have taken any required medication before school.

The book recommended this week is The Boy at the Back of the Class. Year 5 read this book during shared reading and everyone loved it. It is an amazing book by Onjali Q.Rauf about a boy called Ahmet who joins a new school in London after leaving the war zones in Syria. Everyone should read this book!

Year Three

The children have worked really hard this week, despite the really hot weather. Well done year three. In English this week the children have continued with their work on The Boy Who Grew Dragons, planning and writing a diary entry based on this story. Maths has seen the pupils investigating 2D and 3D shapes in various ways which they really enjoyed.

In history, we learnt about the Ancient Greek myth of the Trojan Horse. The children had to look at evidence to decide whether parts of the story were based in fact or whether they were just fiction.

In science, we planned our own experiment to investigation the function of a plant's stem. The children are eager to see if their predictions are accurate or not.

Please keep an eye out in the children's diaries for a list of things such as empty boxes, that the children will need for their DT work. Wishing you all a relaxing weekend in the sun.

Year 4

This week in maths we started a new unit on money. To start off, we used our prior knowledge to write money as decimals then we converted pence to pounds. We are looking forward to continuing our learning on money next week.

In English we used figurative language to write a dramatic opening to an adventure story. We used our knowledge of The Amazon Rainforest as well as ideas from our class text: The Explorer to support us with this.

In science, we learned about food chains and how human behaviour affects these food chains. We also looked at ways to reduce the negative impact on food chains.

In RE we started a new topic Kingdom of God. Our first lesson was about the story of Pentecost.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

Year Five

Despite the weather, Year 5 have remained busy with their learning this week. In English, we have continued reading 'The Nowhere Emporium' by Ross MacKenzie and have been writing and performing poems in the style of recipes, based upon 'The British' by Benjamin Zephaniah. This has involved much deliberation about the poetic style and use of language, especially when editing our work.

In Maths, we have now completed the unit on position and direction and will commence work using decimals next week.

We have enjoyed starting our new Music topic 'Musical Drama' and already the children have begun to explore purposeful learning and linking their knowledge to 'Matilda' which we saw last term.

Our Geography studies this week included a field trip to take measurements of the local river, including depth and the speed of the river flow.

Have a super sunny weekend.

Year Six

This week Year 6 have been working hard on their end of year production. As well as learning the songs, children have been reading the script; understanding the stage direction and becoming more confident in their acting. Also this week, children have been reflecting on their time in year 6 and used this to write to Yarleidis (their Colombian sponsor child) keeping her up to date on recent events. In geography, children researched about Colombia and used this information to write a non-chronological report. 6T enjoyed an afternoon Cooking in the Curriculum, where they listened carefully to Cook’s instructions to create their own pitta pizzas. Over the next few weeks, 6I and 6P will also get the opportunity to make their own too. This week is the last week 6I and group 1 from 6P will be going swimming, next week will be 6T and group 2 from 6P will start next Friday 23rd June.
