Summer 2 - Week 3

{alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

British Values Day

This week we have celebrated British Values Day.  This is one of our four themed days a year (others being School Vision Day - September; Spirituality Day - November; School Values Day - April) and is a chance, where we suspend the normal timetable, to celebrate the values that are celebrated across the country.  Whether you are born here or not; whether you consider yourself British or not, the United Kingdom is where we all currently find ourselves and where our daily interactions take place.

Whilst through the media we often hear quite negative things about the UK - be it climate, weather or government there are many great things too and that is what the pupils have been focussing on, as you will see below, as each year group has different values assigned to them:

Year Three - The rule of law.  We live in a country where we are governed by rules and laws to guide how we live - in the same way the Bible guides Christians.  As we have seen this week, nobody is above the law!

Year Four - Mutual respect and tolerance.  It does not matter who you are or where you come from or what you may believe, you have the right to be respected.  We may not always agree, but there should be tolerance for the views and beliefs of others.

Year Five - Individual liberty. We have the freedom to choose our own careers, where we live, what religion we are, who to marry (or to stay single).  These rights do not exist in every country.

Year Six - Democracy. The right to have a say in who governs us and to vote in fair elections.

The pupils have been producing fantastic work in each of these areas along with undertaking The Big Legal Lesson which is a national campaign to teach young people about the law. We joined a network of thousands of teachers and legal professionals across England and Wales who are committed to developing young people’s knowledge of the rule of law and their legal rights. This ensured that our pupils have a basic understanding of what the law is and how much it affects our lives. A big thank you to Mr. Wakeford for arranging this important day.

Community month

Our community month of June continues this week with more classes visiting the local care home.  Next week we also have classes serving at Dagenham Parish Church.  Well done to all the pupils for supporting their local community in this way.  Having taken our Star of the Week collective worship today, it was interesting to hear how many of the stars were awarded for children supporting their own school community this week - their community spirit is being brought back into school which is wonderful to see.

NEU strike days

I am aware that some parents have contacted the office to ask for the school's plan for 5th and 7th July.  Rest assured I am working on this and will endeavour to keep the school open for as many pupils as possible.  However, some level of disruption is inevitable.  I will aim to have a letter for all parents by the middle of next week, but also, please be aware, as in previous strike days, arrangements can change rather last minute, especially as the covering of sudden staff sickness is even more challenging on such days.  I thank you for your patience.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend,

Mr. David Huntingford

Headteacher

Children across the school have started their RSE(Relationship and Sex Education) units in PSHE.  High-quality RSE ensures children are equipped with the knowledge, understanding, skills, and confidence to cope with the changes their bodies will go through as they get older. Please talk to your children about what they have been learning about in PSHE this week and encourage them to ask questions.

We are so grateful for all the interest in our after school clubs. Please can you ensure your ParentPay account has enough credit to cover the lessons up until 19th July 2023. If you no longer wish for your child to attend please let us know and this will free up a space for someone else.

We will always try our best to accommodate as many pupils as we can, we do have waiting lists if you would like to be added to any

Please ensure you collect your children promptly at 4.30pm from the Kick clubs.

This week 'The Light Thieves' by Helen Duggan has been recommended. This is a brand-new book which has been recently added to the library. A problem occurs, and it is down to a boy or a billionaire to save the world. The book is full of mysteries and wonders.

Year Three

In maths this week, the children have been completing some work on statistics, looking carefully at pictograms and bar charts. They have also started some work on reading scales, particularly those showing grams and kilograms.
This is something they can continue to practise at home with kitchen scales.

English has seen the children thinking about arguments for and against a range of scenarios, eventually thinking about the arguments for and against keeping a pet dragon!

Design and Technology this week gave the children the opportunity to be researchers and landscape gardeners, designing a castle garden, fit for King Charles III. They researched the King Charles to find out about his interests and then tried to design a garden to meet this. Lots of the children chose to rewild part of the garden to attract pollinators and so that he could spend time there painting in watercolours. Others thought that he would like to keep bees in beehives or run a small organic vegetable patch. A few designs even have a helipad! Your ideas were fantastic Year Three.

Year 4

This week in English, the children have written and edited their rainforest descriptive settings based upon their class focus text.  We were very impressed at the descriptive language that the children used in their work.

In maths, the children have continued and completed  their work on money.  Not only have they compared amounts of money, they have estimated with money and concluded the week by working on money word problems.

The children really enjoyed their geography learning this week during which they completed research about the indigenous people of the Amazon Rainforest.  They were amazed to compare and contrast how these tribal people live their lives compared to our own modern lifestyles.

As part of our community month, Class 4D enjoyed a visit to Park View Care Home.  During their visit, the children did a range of activities with the residents including performing some songs, playing board games and reading books.  It was an enriching experience for many of the children.

Year Five

This week in English, the children begun some descriptive work using our class focus text as inspiration. We looked at examples of expanded noun phrases from ‘The Nowhere Emporium’ to add appropriate synonyms to create our own descriptive sentences about a mysterious and enchanting setting. Next week, we will continue exploring the rich language in the story to help with our own descriptive writing.

In maths, the children have been learning to add and subtract decimals - working through this unit in small steps.  They have been using known facts such as addition and subtraction of whole numbers, place-value and number bonds, to help them to understand how to complete their calculations and understand  the relevance of this concept including precise measuring of length, mass and when using money.

In our art sessions, we are looking at and understanding the meaning behind creative work and art. This week, the children considered the intentions of Banksy, beyond the seemingly discriminatory tone of his work, ‘ Clacton pigeon mural’. We discussed the possible message that Banksy was trying to convey. The children then creatively altered the image to reflect British Values through art, craft and design.

Year Six

This week in English, year 6 have written their own adventure stories, where the character is warned not to do something and ends up learning a vital lesson about following instructions. In maths, the children have looked at how much a range of bills are and have used their knowledge of wages to work out how much they would have left to spend. In Religious education, the children have learned about the Gurdwara and what each section of the worship place for Sikhs is used for. In science, the children have continued to look at the classification system created by Karl Linnaeus and using this to compare two living things. For our enterprise linking Geography and computing, the children had a blast creating their own travel agency websites, all three teachers are very impressed with their outcomes. In PSHE the children have looked at their school uniforms and how they would get to their new school from home. Year six have continued preparing for their end of year performance, they are so excited for you all to see.
