Summer 2 - Week 6

{alt_tag}

 Dear parents and carers,

Another busy week has come to an end with again, so much to celebrate!

Ford Fest

Firstly, our summer festival held on Tuesday afternoon was a roaring success.  It was wonderful to see pupils, staff and parents out in the sunshine enjoying the food, stalls, DJ, choir and inflatables together.  The rain also held off! A huge thank you to Mrs. Gladden and the office team for organising such an event and to all the pupils and staff: every year group had been involved in some form of creative activity to raise money for the school.  You can read more about Ford Fest below.

I'm an eleven-year-old, get me out of here!

After weeks of singing, learning lines and rehearsals, our immensely talented Year Six debuted their musical masterpiece.  And what a performance it was.  The audience laughed and cheered with delight as our pupils demonstrated their thespian side and demonstrated to us all how they have grown in confidence over their four years in the school. Thank you to the Year Six team for your hard work supporting the pupils with the production, Mrs Tina Finch for the fantastic props and Mr Howe for being the sound technician.

School reports

Today you would have received a copy of your child's school report.  This is an important document and should be read and discussed with your child.  I am confident you will find a number of wonderful comments regarding your child's effort, progress and enthusiasm which should be celebrated.  There will also be advice and targets to ensure that your child continues to progress, be it at William Ford or at their new secondary school for our Year Six pupils.  Year Four pupils will also have received a copy of their Multiplication Tables Check test and Year Six a copy of their SATS results.  All pupils will be provided with their attendance certificates and Years 3-5 will have a copy of all of our key dates and events for the next academic year.  Should you have any concerns, there is an opportunity to drop into school on Monday to discuss this with the class teacher and also to meet your child's new teacher (Years 3, 4 and 5).

Parents will be aware that we usually mix up the classes at the ned of Year Three and Year Five.  Year Five were actually mixed at Christmas hence we have no plans to mix them again.  We have also decided not to mix Year Three as we recognise there has been some disruption with 3P this year with a number of different teachers taking this class hence we wish to provide some stability for them.

Now married, Miss Trubshaw will be known as Mrs Freeland. We also welcome Miss Isaac-Wilson to our team, who has experience of William Ford - working alongside Mr. Wakeford this year.  We also welcome Mrs Adom who will be supporting some of our SEND children in 'The Learning Zone' that is being built over the summer.  Mrs Adom joins us from Valance Primary School within the borough.

Sadly, we do have some goodbyes to share.  After many years at William Ford, we are saying goodbye to Mr. Harrington who is retiring from teaching.  Mr Harrington has led our school football team and has been integral to the school as a governor, supporting French across the school (including our French trips) and running our football team.  Mr. Harrington is actually hoping to continue as a governor and to lead our football team in a voluntary capacity for which I am extremely grateful.  He has also agreed to attend upcoming French trips (as I do not speak French, this is a huge relief to me!) so pupils will still see him regularly across the school.  We are also saying goodbye to Mrs. Norman who is seeking some experience teaching in KS1 at a school in neighbouring Redbridge. Mrs Norman has worked for a number of years at William Ford and, in addition to her class teaching, has supported pupils in creating podcasts during lockdown which inspired our idea of a school radio station.  I am sure you would all like to join me in thanking these members of staff and assuring them of our prayers and best wishes for their future.

Two important letters

Please see below for two important letters.  On Weis from Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, regarding free school meals for ALL William Ford pupils next year and the other is from the local NHS trust board regarding increased cases of measles within the local area and the importance of the MMR vaccine to keep your child and the whole William Ford school community safe.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Some of our wonderful children visited Billingsgate Market on Wednesday to take part in a workshop. They learnt about different types of fish found around the UK coast and how to prepare the fish for a meal, which was cooked for us to eat. Children were incredibly well-behaved and enjoyed the experience. Please see the school trip tabs on the website for photos.

Make sure you check your children school bags for their rond of year report, There is also a pupil update form in the envelope ( for years 3,4 and 5) which we would kindly ask that you return to us before the end of term.

We would also like to thank the parents for your continued support through this year. Especially those parents who purchased additional FordFest wristbands to gift to pupils.

This week 'Daisy and the Trouble with School Trips' by Kes Gray has been recommended. This book is one of the brand-new books recently added to the library.

In the book children go on a school trip to a museum as part of their History unit. There are lots of exciting parts to the book, I am looking forward to seeing what happens at the end!

Year Three

We have had an incredibly busy week in Year Three this week. We had an amazing day at Kew Gardens on Monday. The children were amazed at the different plants from around the world and enjoyed seeing the different styles of garden there. They were very well-behaved on the train and acted really maturely.

In Design and Technology the children have been using their plans to make their own castle. The results are fantastic as you will see when they bring them home next week.

The pupils also enjoyed making items for Ford Fest and were pleased to see their plants, planted last week, beginning to grow.

Year 4

This week in Year 4, we have had another fun-filled, action-packed week, with lots of events on! On Monday the pupils worked hard in music, preparing for their Recorder concert next week. In Maths, we have continued our learning of time, looking at the 12 hour and 24 hour clocks and how to convert between them. In English, we have been writing an informational report, based on the Amazon Rainforest. The pupils really enjoyed using computing to research facts and figures and species of the Amazon. We also really enjoyed preparing and designing Iced biscuits for the Ford Fest, which was a great success! As well as this, pupils have been working hard to complete their Design Technology projects, making and designing a slingshot car! Next week, marks the last week of term and we very much look forward to celebrating and enjoying the week with all of Year 4!

Year Five

It has been another busy week full of exciting activities for Year Five. The children embarked on a trip to Billingsgate market where they discovered the importance of food sustainability and learned some special culinary techniques demonstrated by skilled instructors. They gained insights into the unique complexities of seafood as well as learning valuable life skills including teamwork, attention to detail and the pleasure of discovering new flavours through the preparation and tasting of seafood.

Year Five also visited Dagenham Park secondary school to enjoy various practical activities taught by the schools enthusiastic and experienced teachers. The children learned many skills including: mark-making techniques using natural twigs and black ink to create their own animal art; perfecting the dance steps to perform the Lindy-Hop swing dance style; and conducting a fascinating experiment in a well-facilitated science laboratory where they delved into the concept of solubility in materials. It was certainly an engaging day at Dagenham Park filled with hands-on experiences across various subjects. We would like to thank all of the staff and their students at Dagenham Park for their hospitality in keeping the children safe and happy, and for providing this enriching experience that, we are positive, has ignited their curiosity to discover more about the world we live in.

At school, the children have continued to explore their creative writing skills by crafting descriptive and captivating stories set in an imaginary world, drawing inspiration from our focus text, 'The Nowhere Emporium'. The children have shown great skill in their writing using techniques such as figurative language and accurately punctuated dialogue to bring to life vibrant settings and interesting characters.

Year Six

The children have enjoyed doing some transitional work with Reece from Dagenham parish church. Looking at how they can make better decisions, learning how to tie a tie and looking at ways they can survive secondary school.

This week has been a whirlwind for year 6, we spent the week preparing for the production on the 13th. It went amazingly! The children were phenomenal; great acting skills, fantastic expression, beautiful singing and kept the audience entertained for an hour and a half.
