23/24 - Autumn 1 - Week 3

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

Meet the SLT - Monday 25th September at 9am and 5pm

Those of you (hopefully all of you!) who keep a check of our school calendar (available on our school website, with the most recent events shown below) will have spotted that next week is our first parent session of the school year.  This is an opportunity for all parents from all year groups to view one of our collective worship sessions (9am only) then to sit with a member of SLT with a coffee and a slice of cake to ask any questions you may have.  We also hope to provide some tours of the school.  There is no need to sign up - just turn up!  The kitchen are already baking delicious cakes for your arrival.

Royal Ballet Company

The start of this week was full of fun and energy as our Year Three pupils worked with the Royal Ballet Company.  Not only was this energetic and supported the pupils' fitness, they learnt about the emotions music can provoke along with developing movements that are in time and reflect the mood of the music.

Tina Turner The Musical

Perhaps not a subheading you were expecting to read but as we are on the theme of performing, last Sunday I attended this fantastic show at the Aldwych Theatre in London's West End.

Why am I telling you this?  Because one of our Year Six pupils, AJ Aboilralor, was performing, playing the part of Tina's son. Congratulations to AJ for his fantastic performance and for his skill and bravery in performing each week in front of thousands of people!

School photo shoot

Those of you who have had a connection with William Ford for a while will be aware of the amount of changes that have taken place - both inside and outside the building. To celebrate this we have invited a photographer into school to capture the progress we have made along with evidencing the lessons that take place.  This will enable us to update our school website.  I look forward to sharing these with you once they are developed.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mr. David Huntingford

Headteacher

We will be having Flu Vaccinations on 18th October and 28th November in school. Paperwork will be sent home on Monday for you.

These will be nasal spray vaccines. If your child is unable to have the spray vaccination please email the school office, and we will arrange for the relevant documentation to be sent home to you.

Please remember that all jewellery must be removed on PE days. PE is an important part of the curriculum and there has been an increase in the number of children who have been wearing jewellery and are unable to remove it. As per our school uniform guide,

Children should wear no jewellery other than watches and stud earrings.  Nail varnish and make-up are not permitted.  Earrings must be removed for P.E. and swimming.

Year Three

This week, Year 3 have continued their English work based on the story 'Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx'. They have been thinking about whether Marcy should join her dad on an adventure and have been debating the advantages and disadvantages of doing this. In maths, they have continued to work on place value in numbers up to 1000.

The children were excited about taking part in their first ballet lesson. They learnt first position, and they were intrigued to look closely at a professional dancer's ballet shoes. Today we were lucky enough to watch an impressive display from the Royal Ballet School.

In history, children were introduced to the concept of chronology. Ask your child to explain this to you. They ordered ancient civilisations from the date that they were founded.

To think about Visual Impairment Awareness Week, the children have been attempting to complete blind drawing, which involves drawing with a blindfold on.

Your child will now have their own reading book and diary. Please ensure that your child reads nightly and an adult signs to indicate the pages that they have read. Thank you.

Year Four

Year 4 children have settled in really well and have just carried on with the curriculum. In maths, we continued our unit on Place Value. This week we have started to represent numbers to 10 000. We also started to read and estimate the numbers on a number line up to 10, 000.

In English, we looked at reasons why the Cave Clan should hunt the mammoths.  We had a class debate on the advantages and disadvantages of hunting and killing a mammoth.

We are looking forward to learning about fronted adverbials next week and also creating our own woolly mammoth leaflet!

In Geography, we had an interesting research lesson where we explored the impact of Indian mountains on the lives of the people who live there. We also compared living in the mountains to living in London.

In Science, we used our creative skills to make our own electrical  safety posters.

In RE, we researched Hindu beliefs, and we looked at the different gods worshipped by Hindus.

We are looking forward to having another exciting week.

Have a great weekend.

Year Five

Everyone is now settled well into Year 5, and we have all been working very hard this week. Our place value work in Maths involved looking at partitioning and number lines to investigate, compare and order large numbers up to a million.

In shared reading and English we continue to learn about Dorothy and the other women, focusing on the prejudices and segregation they had to overcome. We have used modal verbs to write a motivational speech to persuade them to keep going!

Our Science work has included looking at scientific enquiry questions for our research into 'Earth and Space', and we have extended this theme into our French lessons where we have written metaphor poems about the sun and moon - in French!

In R.E. we thought about Moses as a 'Person of God' and whether we would have been brave enough to stand up to Pharaoh and follow God's instruction.

Our new geography topic is all about the United Kingdom. For our introduction this week we researched some facts and statistics about the U.K. and thought about some questions we might like to find answers to.

The children have been enjoying this term's gymnastics lessons in P.E. and we would like to thank everyone for ensuring that the children have their P.E. kits on the appropriate days.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Year Six

The Year 6 children have now settled into their new routines and are getting to grips with their new curriculum.  We would like to remind parents that all children should be reading their reading books regularly at home and remembering to get their homework diaries signed by an adult each time.  This helps teachers when tracking changing of reading books.

In maths this week, the children have had their final lessons on place value and completed a range of activities including comparing and ordering integers, rounding to a variety of multiples and also exploring negative numbers.

The children wrote a character description of Mr Spink in the style of a wanted poster in English this week.  They worked hard to ensure their writing included details of Mr Spink’s physical features as well as some of his personality traits.

The children have been introduced to their new unit of work in geography this week.  They spent time either in our IT suite or using the school iPads to research a range of information about some of the world’s most famous mountains.

French was rather tricky this week as the children learned how to say the names of various countries around the world.  There were fewer cognates to help the children guess which countries were being said but this did not stop them trying their best.

Once again, the Year 6 team would like to thank you for your continued support and wish you a restful weekend.
