Dear parents and carers,

Times Tables Rockstar Day

Today we re-launched our online software, Times Tables Rockstars.  And what better way to launch this fantastic piece of software that pupils can use at home to practise their tables than with a fantastic theme day!

Not only was it great to see the fantastic effort with costumes made by pupils and staff but the fun and enjoyment of pupils learning their times tables was palpable across the school.

Why do this?  Well times tables are one of the absolute foundations of mathematics.  From working with fractions to solving quadratic equations to working with complex numbers, a strong knowledge of tables not only supports learning across KS2 but also through GCSE and A Level maths.  It is also important for our pupils to see that learning their tables can be fun and rewarding.  My thanks to Miss Ibukun for arranging and co-ordinating such a fantastic day.

Diversity Month

October in William Ford is Diversity Month.  We wanted to build upon our previous years of Black History Month to extend this out to all cultures within our school from Eastern Europe to Indian; African to East Asian and of course not forgetting our friends in Colombia, South America.

We have been thinking about people that inspire us. The pupils have been asked to produce a piece of work about someone from their own heritage that inspires them. We would like them to be as creative as possible in their responses to this. We will be inviting you all to visit our display of inspirational people at the end of the month.

Harvest

Next week, we will be having a special Harvest assembly, where we will be sharing the origins and reasons behind the harvest festival, as well as kicking off our harvest collection. Please can you begin to bring in any long-lasting food products that you can spare. We would love to gather a substantial offering for our harvest collection, that we can donate to the London Riverside Church - Barking and Dagenham foodbank. This is always a special time of year when we can share a little bit of love with the wider community!

Website photos

A couple of weeks ago, I shared that we had a photographer in school taking pictures for our new website.  I am delighted to share that these have now arrived at school and are currently replacing the older images on our website (www.williamfordschool.co.uk).  I will share a small selection below for you to enjoy.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

1 Corintians 12:12-14

12 A person’s body is one thing, but it has many parts. Yes, there are many parts to a body, but all those parts make only one body. Christ is like that too. 13 Some of us are Jews, and some of us are Greeks. Some of us are slaves, and some of us are free. But we were all baptized into one body through one Spirit. And we were all made to share in the one Spirit.

I recommend the book The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. This is a great book which is a challenging read. The book is full of figurative and descriptive language that makes the book a must-read.

Year Three

In English this week, the children have continued their work on Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx. They have written descriptions of the desert setting and have learnt how to edit their work to make improvements.

Maths has seen the children starting a unit of work on addition and subtraction. They have been thinking about how numbers change when 1 or 10 is added or taken away.

In history, the pupils have been thinking about where Egypt is and when the Ancient Egyptian civilisation was founded. They have also looked at an Ancient Egyptian source to see what they can find out about this civilisation and have asked questions about what they would like to find out. These are skills that they will continue to use in their enquiry work in history throughout William Ford.

In RE, the pupils have been thinking about how Christians follow God's instructions about looking after creation. They have looked at examples of different groups of Christians and individual Christians and how they see it as their responsibility to look after the world.

What a fantastic day we've had dressed up as rockstars. We hope that you have a relaxing weekend.

Year Four

This week, year 4 has had another action-packed week full of exciting lessons. In English we have been writing a setting description about a valley flood plain, linked to our wonderful book that we are studying in Reading: Nell and the Cave Bear. In maths, we have started a new topic of addition and subtraction, the children have been using various resources to support them with this learning. In science this week, we were constructing a simple light bulb circuit in collaborative groups. The children learnt about open and closed circuits and were so thrilled to be able to light up a light bulb! In History, pupils looked at Stone Age art and how during the Stone Age, people used to draw and illustrate on the walls and ceilings of caves. In RE, continuing with our theme on Hinduism, pupils studied and compared Puja (Hindus form of worship) to that of other religions. In PSHE, the focus was on teamwork and how we can live together in peace. We would like to wish you a very peaceful weekend and look forward to seeing all pupils on Monday!

Year Five

It's been another busy week in Year Five.

In English we have been learning about adverbials of time ready to include these in the biographies we will be beginning next week. We have also been researching the character of Dorothy from 'Hidden Figures' and making bullet point notes ready for next week's writing.

Our Maths this week has involved the addition and subtraction of large numbers and we have been using our previously developed skill of rounding numbers to assist both with estimating and checking our answers.

Linking in with our Science unit about space, in French we have been learning French vocabulary for the Solar System. This week we have described and compared the planets using adjectives - in French!

For our R.E. session, we have been finding out about a more recent 'Person of God' - Martin Luther King. We thought about how he tried to improve society and make a better, more inclusive world.

After a very exciting Friday in school, we wish you all a peaceful weekend.

Year Six

The children have continued working hard in all areas of the curriculum this week.  In maths, we have started using our multiplication knowledge to complete the formal written method of long multiplication.  Some of the children have also explored alternative methods of long multiplication too.

In English this week, the children have completed a number of tasks in the build up to writing an effective descriptive setting of a Victorian workhouse.  One of the activities that they especially enjoyed was exploring written accounts of life in the workhouse and using some of these ideas and vocabulary in their own writing.

The Year Six computing lesson this week focussed on developing the knowledge and skills to capture online bullying content as evidence.  As always, we suggest you speak to your child on a regular basis about their online activity.

Finally, the year group enjoyed taking part in the TTRS dress up as a rockstar day.  It has been a great way to end the week.  We wish you a restful weekend.
