23/24 - Autumn 2 - Week 2

Dear parents and carers,

Ben Kinsella Workshop - Knife crime

This week we had our first Year Six visit to the Ben Kinsella workshop, that is in Barking, where children learnt about the dangers of carrying a knife and the repercussions of carrying a knife - not only for the victim and perpetrator but also for the families involved.

The pupils listened to real life testimony from family members of Ben, recognised how Ben was just a normal child, like them, who got caught up in a tragic situation, as well as visiting a ‘prison cell’ and hearing from someone imprisoned not for carrying a knife, but being part of a group where he knew a knife was being carried – the idea of ‘joint enterprise’.

What was also heart-breaking was learning about one of William Ford’s past pupils, Duran Kajiama who was a victim of knife crime.  From past trips, hearing his mother speak and seeing photos of his life, including seeing him wearing a William Ford school uniform is certainly something that will stay with me.  Parents, please do follow up on the visit and talk to your children about the dangers of carrying a knife.  Most knife carriers end up killed by their own knife.  The other two Year Six classes will be visiting before Christmas.

A new outdoor area for William Ford

Please do scroll down to our new section and read about the new mini forest being planned for William Ford pupils to enjoy.  We are hoping to use some of our pupils to be involved in the planting on the 28th November.

The Learning Zone

It has been a while since I updated you on this exciting new special educational needs provision.  This is very nearly complete and some parts of the building we are beginning to use.  The final stages involve fire alarms, magnetic pass-controlled door locks and furnishings, including technology.  Sadly, outdoor areas will not be complete until Easter.  The photos below will give you some idea of how this area is developing.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Year Three

This week the children have continued to practise column addition in maths. They have been introduced to regrouping and are practising this useful skill. They have also completed maths assessments, and they were pleased to be able to use this strategy in their work.

English has seen the children continue with their descriptive work, this time describing James' aunts' house. They have also completed a reading assessment using many of the strategies they have learnt in shared reading sessions.

History saw the children investigating the Ancient Egyptian pharaohs. They were fascinated to know that pharaohs could be both male and female. They also were interested in the pharaohs wearing fake beards!

In RE, the children were looking at the differences between believers' and infant baptism. They have compared the two and also thought about how they are similar.

Year Four

This week, pupils have been continuing reading their class text: Journey to Jo'burg. They have now started to write a diary entry based on the experiences and perspective of one of the main characters.

In maths, our focus this week has been multiplication and division, closely looking at the 3,6 and 9- times tables.

In history this week, the children were fascinated by the unexplained mysteries and enigma of Stonehenge - as they researched Stonehenge, detailing why it was built and how the stones got there!

In Science, pupils explored gases and talked about the different types of gases, experimenting with balloons, bottles and perfumes.

In RE, pupils compared the different festivals of various religions, looking at the similarities and differences.

We hope you have a wonderful, restful weekend!

Year Five

In Year 5 this week we have been working hard on our Autumn term assessments. The children have tackled these tests with enthusiasm. The results of these are used as a tool to help teachers ensure the areas that need more support are identified.

Alongside the assessments, in English, the children have been using brackets and dashes to add extra information. This skill will be used next week when we will plan and write a non-chronological report.

In maths, we have been learning how to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa, as well as comparing fractions. It has been challenging but successful. We will continue to work with fractions next week.

R.E. this week has been focussed on finding out about Jesus and what the Bible says about him being the Messiah.

In history, children had to decide which statements were true and false, then prove it by conducting their own research. The statements all focussed on the religious beliefs of the Anglo-Saxons.

Our architect art topic concluded with the children designing their own monuments. They had to think of things that represented them and create an impressive monument design.

Congratulations to the Year 5 children who took part and passed their Bikeability assessments this week. We are very happy that they are demonstrating their awareness of safety when riding their bikes.

Year Six

This week has been assessment week for the Year Six pupils.  They have been busy completing past SATs papers and have put their best effort into these assessments.  The Year Six teachers look forward to discussing their results with you during our autumn term parents evening.  There has been time to complete some of our normal curriculum subjects this week, including science, history and design and technology.

In science, the children have begun their new unit of work examining light.  They started this off by completing five challenges which included examining light sources, how light travels and how our eyes use light to see objects around us.

In history this week, the children have examined a range of historical sources about Victorian workhouses.  They were encouraged to consider the purpose and reliability of the sources.

In design and technology, the children examined Victorian clothing before moving on to designing their own waistcoat that they will begin to make next week.  They will hopefully be able to wear their waistcoats on our Victorian Day which will be held on Friday 24th November.

As always, the Year Six team wish you a restful weekend.
