Dear parents and carers,

Film Crew for Lego and Institute of Imagination

This week, year six have enjoyed a workshop called 'Coding our Emotions.'  This linked the idea of emotional regulation and self awareness with computing in a fun and engaging session, led by ine of our partners, the Institute of Imagination.  As exciting as this is, what made the day even more special was having a film crew on-site who were making a promotional video for Lego who help fund these exciting projects.  Class 6I were the stars of this film.  Linked in with our curriculum intent, we hope seeing a film being made within the school will further promote careers within the film industry.

We will let you know when this film is available for viewing.

Spirituality Day

This is now an annual event at William Ford and provides an opportunity to break away from the normal timetable, to reflect on some of the bigger questions within this world.

Through past discussions with staff, parents and governors, it has been agreed that spirituality considers the following:

  • Consideration of where we have come from and where we are going
  • Consideration of the purpose of our existence
  • Connection with a ‘greater being’ or ‘force’ that cannot be experienced through physical senses or expressed through everyday language
  • Develops pupils’ own faith and beliefs, providing them with opportunities to connect with God, nature and others and consider how this informs the choices they make and the values and principles by which they choose to live

Our focus for this year was on awe and wonder where children considered the following:

Window: Gazing in wonder about the things in this world and in creation. What makes you say: "Wow!" ?

Mirror: Reflecting and looking inside yourself whilst considering the following questions: 'What do you believe? What are your values? Why? How is this different to other beliefs?'

Door: Pupils considered How do your beliefs shape what you do and how you act? How have you been transformed? What can you do to make a difference?

The pupils have created some wonderful work including writing, art and DT that will be proudly displayed in our school hall.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mr. David Huntingford

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

This week 'The Boy Who Fooled The World' by Lisa Thompson has been recommended.

You should read this book because it convinces us to do things that we love and if you can't do things you don't need to be embarrassed to speak out and ask for help.

Year Three

The children have worked hard this week. They have now completed all of their assessments, for which they all worked really hard.

Maths has seen the children continuing with their column method, and they are now becoming more confident in regrouping both across the tens and across the hundreds column.

In English, the children have s5tarted to plan a character description of the Aunts from James and the Giant Peach.

In geography, the children have been thinking about human and physical geographical features. They have looked at pictures of various features and have sorted them by these criteria.

On Thursday, the children took part in Spirituality Day. The children discussed the difficult topic of spirituality, looked at the story of Daniel in the lion's den and wrote prayers that would help them when they are worried or scared. They also produced amazing artwork based on the concept of awe and wonder.

Year Four

This week at our school, we celebrated Spirituality Day, focusing on the deep connections that give us awe and wonder. The students had an art lesson centred around creating natural masterpieces that reflect their unique personalities, evoking a sense of awe and wonder.

In their English lessons, Year 4 delved into the key features of an information text, exploring the topic of apartheid. They studied the context, facts, and examples, developing a deeper understanding of this significant historical period.

In Maths, the students successfully completed their arithmetic and reasoning assessment tests, demonstrating their growing proficiency and problem-solving skills.

Religious Education (RE) lessons this week focused on exploring the similarities and differences between Hinduism and Christianity. Through comparative discussions and activities, the students gained a broader perspective on these influential religions.

During History lessons, the students engaged in collaborative learning as they took on the roles of archaeologists. They discussed and debated why certain artifacts would be found in a Bronze Age grave, fostering critical thinking and historical analysis.

Overall, it has been an enriching and insightful week for Year 4!

Year Five

This week in Year 5, the children have been working hard on writing their non-chronological information texts in English. They took all their detailed research from the previous week, and began organising their research under appropriate subheadings to create their own non-chronological information texts about Syria. The final pieces were fantastic and included lots of interesting information.

In maths, the children have continued working hard on their fraction knowledge. This week we focused on comparing and ordering fractions less than and greater than 1.

Our new unit of work in Science this half-term is Forces. We began this topic by looking at paratroopers. The children spent time doing their own research into paratroopers, looking at what they do, what skills they need and qualifications.

On Thursday, the children took part in Spirituality day. We looked at what gave us that sense of awe and wonder. The children produced some excellent descriptive writing pieces and artwork inspired by what gives them awe and wonder.

Overall, we have had another great week in Year five and hope you have a fun-filled, restful weekend!

Year Six

This week, another class from Year Six visited the Ben Kinsella workshop in Barking.  Once again, the children learned so much about the dangers of knife crime and how it impacts so many of our community.

In English, the children have begun their new unit of work examining biographies.  They have learned about the various features that biographies contain and looked for these features in a range of biographical texts.

In maths, the children have continued working on their fraction knowledge.  They have learned about equivalent fractions and have also compared and ordered fractions with different denominators.

Our new unit of work in French focusses on football, and the children have already learned some new vocabulary connected to this sport.  In music, we have moved on to learning about the role of music in films.  In computing, the children started their new unit of work examining computing systems and networks by looking at secret codes and trying to crack a range of different codes.  It was rather puzzling at times but the children really enjoyed it.

As always, the year Six team wish you a restful weekend.
