23/24 - Autumn 2 - Week 5

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

Parents' evening

It has been fantastic to see so many parents meeting with their child's teacher this week.  I cannot stress just how important such events are. Not only are you adequately informed about your child's progress, but you are also provided with the opportunity to raise any concerns or questions that you have.  Research shows time and time again that children make the best progress when they see school and family working closely together for the betterment of the child hence I urge you all, if you have not been able to meet with your child's teacher, please do make an appointment with them or via the school office as soon as possible.

Tree planting

A few weeks ago, I shared with you images of how Old Dagenham Park was going to be transformed through the planting of a mini forest for the use of William Ford pupils.  On Tuesday, groups of William Ford children had the opportunity to join with our corporate city sponsor to help plant these saplings that will one day form our beautiful new forest and eco area.  This will also provide us with the opportunity to run Forest Schools.  We were also delighted to invite some pupils from Village Infants School to help as these will be the children who will really see the forest grow and develop during their time with us.  It will also be nice for them to look back and say, 'I helped plant that.'

Considerate parking

Whilst we are still waiting for School Streets to be installed to limit vehicle access within the vicinity of the school, I do need to remind families about considerate driving and parking.  The school is receiving complaints from local residents with regard to car stereo noise on the driveway to William Ford, particularly from parents collecting from Sun and Moon club. In addition, we are also receiving complaints from residents in Ford Road and Manning Road with regard to cars parking on or across private driveways.  As a school we aim to be an integral part of the local community.  Please help us to achieve this by keeping our neighbours happy.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mr. David Huntingford

Headteacher

This week 'Amari and the Night Brothers' by B.B.Alston has been recommended.

You should read this book because it is fun and mysterious. Things that are not real suddenly become real in the book. There are other books in this series to look forward to.

Year Three

In maths, this week the children have continued their work on addition and subtraction and have been thinking about pairs of complementing numbers. They are more confident in using the column method for subtraction now too. Keep practising this valuable method year 3.

In English, the pupils have been thinking about the features of newspaper reports in order to plan their own newspaper report based on part of the story of James and the Giant Peach.

Geography has seen the children practising using alphanumeric grid-references to locate various features of the continent of Africa.

In R.E., the children have been thinking about kennings that describe the parts of the trinity. Kennings are poetic expressions and the children have even created some of their own.

Year Four

This week, in English, our focus was on crafting letters to the President of South Africa during the apartheid era, delving into the challenging conditions faced by black individuals.

In mathematics, our attention was directed towards the division and multiplication of 10s and 100s.

Science sessions involved practical experiments to measure temperature across various locations in the school, followed by the creation of a bar chart using the acquired data.

In art, we embarked on a journey back to the Stone Age to become Stone Age cave artists, resulting in the creation of outstanding pieces of artwork.

It has been a week filled with insightful learning experiences and creative exploration. The students have demonstrated great enthusiasm and dedication to their studies, and we are looking forward to continuing this momentum in the weeks to come.

Year Five

This week in Year 5, we have been as busy as usual. In English, we have looked at figurative language and how we can use that in our writing to make it more interesting for the reader. The children got to do some tasting this week, in order to help them write a persuasive advert. They used their senses and the figurative language in this piece of writing. They sounded great! They have persuaded me to the shops right now!

In maths, we have finally come to the end of our unit on fractions, finishing off with subtracting fractions. It was hard work, but we got there! Our next unit is multiplying and dividing, next week specifically looking at the formal written method of multiplying.

Continuing our United Kingdom geography unit, the children had to describe and explain the sorts of industries in which people in the UK work. They looked at what people do now, how that has changed over the years and why.

Music has been fantastic. The children have continued to learn about the Blues, learning how to play all of the 12-bars found within this type of music. The glockenspiels have been out and we have been making lovely music.

In computing this week, the children have been learning to search the internet safely and accurately. They have had to understand the importance of keywords and to use their search skills to answer focused questions.

Year Six

This week in English, the children have completed their research and planning of their biographies about Charles Dickens or Charles Darwin, and they have begun writing their biographies in full.  Next week, the children will complete their writing and then edit their work.

In our geography lesson this week, the children explored how humans use mountainous areas.  They worked in small groups to research different aspects of human use and then presented their findings to the rest of the class.

In computing, the children have been learning about people who have contributed to the development of computers.  They then chose one of these pioneers and started their own research about them.  Next week, the children will continue their research and then use their findings to make a PowerPoint presentation.

As part of their unit of work on light, this week’s science involved the children planning and carrying out an investigation into the relationship between distance from a light source and the size of shadows created.  Many of the children demonstrated their developing knowledge and understanding of fair testing during this activity.

On Wednesday, the children watched a workshop about road safety.  It was very informative and the children listened and participated really well.  The Year Six team wish you a restful weekend.
