Dear parents and carers,

While sitting in our school library this week, I had the pleasure of listening to a number of children read. It was lovely to see the library being enjoyed and to hear the children sharing their books with such enthusiasm. We all know how important reading is to children’s learning, but our ambition goes beyond simply teaching children to read well. We want them to develop a genuine love of books and reading, discovering the excitement, imagination and enjoyment that a good book can bring. We want to help every child to see reading as a pleasure, rather than something they have to do.

Words matter! Across the school, we have been putting a real focus on helping children develop a rich vocabulary. Knowing and understanding more words helps children with their reading, writing, speaking and, importantly, their understanding of the wider curriculum. Ask your child about some of the new words they have learnt this week. You might be surprised by what they know!

You may also be aware that every child now has access to an iPad in school. We are excited about the opportunities this gives us to support learning, engagement and, importantly, inclusion. However, this does not mean that technology is replacing the things we know matter. Our children will continue to read real books, develop their handwriting, talk, create, play and work practically. The iPad is not a replacement for these experiences. It is an additional tool that, when used purposefully, can help every child to participate and succeed.

As always, there is so much wonderful learning taking place across our school, and it is often the small moments that remind us why we do what we do. Thank you, as always, for your continued support and for the important part you play in your child’s education.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend and look forward to welcoming everyone back next week.

Nugget Savings, in partnership with Local London, has produced a helpful childcare support booklet to help families understand the range of funded and affordable childcare schemes available.

The booklet provides clear information on childcare entitlements, financial support, and the schemes available to help parents and carers reduce childcare costs and make informed decisions about childcare options.

Many families may be eligible for support without realising it, so we'd be grateful if you could circulate this resource to any parents, carers, or families you work with who may benefit.

The Finger Eater

This is an interesting book about a strange creature that likes eating people’s fingers!

I enjoyed this book because it is exciting and a little bit strange. The story has some funny parts that made me laugh. I liked the characters because they were interesting and made the story enjoyable.
