23/24 - Spring 1 - Week 6

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

Celebrations

Well it may seem like we have only just returned from Christmas but it is the school holidays once again!  Next week is half term so school will be closed.  It is always at this time (just past the half way point in the school year) that I find it good to look back and reflect on all of the wonderful things that have happened across the term so far and the school year.  We have had amazing experiences from planting a forest to a residential involving sliding down waterfalls.  We have been to the theatre and represented the school in sport.  We have received wonderful accolades from visitors and enjoyed wonderful educational opportunities from learning with Lego to becoming photographers!

I have also taken the opportunity this week to spend time looking through the pupils writing books.  It has been a joy to see how much their writing is developing, not just in content and compostion but the range of punctuation, sentence openers and vocabulary that is used.  Well done William Ford.

But that is not the end of the celebrations!  Please scroll down to read about how our Y6 football team experienced victory at its latest game against Gorsebrook Academy.  Also staying in year six, the Brilliant Club graduated this week from SOAS University of London - again scroll down to read more.

Lent

Further continuing with the theme of celebrations, on Tuesday we celebrated the start of lent, a time when Christians opften give up something they enjoy in order that they can focus on the temptations faced by Jesus along with his ultimate sacrifice - giving up his life to secure the forgiveness of sins for us all.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mr. David Huntingford

Headteacher

We are excited to inform year five that they will be going swimming when we return after half term. Letters will be sent out to parents shortly. However, children will return slightly later on their swimming days at approximately 3:40 pm.

Class 5A will be going on Monday afternoons.

Class 5H will be going on Tuesday afternoons.

Class 5p will be going on Wednesday afternoons.

Please ensure your child has the appropriate swimwear (a copy of the Boroughs swimwear guidance is available on the website under uniforms) and swimming hat. Please note we no longer sell swimming hats in the school office.

We would also like to say a huge, thanks for all the interest in our after-school clubs. We are working our way through the lists now and trying to allocate as many spaces as possible. You will be receiving emails if you were able to secure a place.

This week 'A Kind of Spark' by Elle McNicoll has been recommended.

This is a very interesting book which is easy to become hooked on. It helps you to understand how everyone is different and learn about people's disabilities.

Year Three

It is hard to believe that we are half way through the academic year already and we still have so many new learning experiences ahead of us.

We hope you all have a happy and peaceful half term.

What we have learnt about this week

We have been studying the features of postcards in English this week. The children have planned and written their own postcards, as geologists writing back from the island they designed in our geography lessons.

In maths we have continued with multiplication and division and have introduced the formal layout of these. The children need a secure knowledge of their times tables to fully understand this work. Please encourage your child to continue to practise these regularly at home.

In science, we have studied the properties of different types of soil.

We have concluded our Ancient Egypt unit in history by looking at other civilisations that co-existed alongside the Ancient Egyptians.

What we will learn about next week

After half term, we will be moving onto our new shared reading book, a non-fiction book called 'Wild Cities'.

We will also be revising the accurate use of capital letters and full stops as this remains an area which needs further improvement across the year group.

In maths we will be introducing short division with remainders.

Our new science unit this half term is 'Forces' and in history we will begin learning about Ancient Greece.

Year Four

This week in Year 4, there has been a lot of exciting learning taking place across various subjects.

In English, the children have been exploring their creative writing skills by constructing their own narrative stories.

In Maths, the children have been concentrating on enhancing their understanding of adding and subtracting fractions.

In R.E, the class embarked on a new topic of study - salvation. To enhance their understanding, the children worked collaboratively to re-enact the story of the last supper.

Geography lessons focused on developing the children's map skills. Specifically, they practiced locating various countries within the continent of Europe. This allowed them to develop a greater understanding of the European region and its geographical features.

In Science, the children had the opportunity to work in groups and design their own pair of ear defenders. This hands-on project allowed them to explore the properties of sound and develop their problem-solving skills.

What we will learn about next week

After the half-term break, the children can look forward to exciting new topics and challenges. In English, we will be delving into the book 'How to Train a Dragon,' where the children will explore the fascinating world of dragons and embark on their own writing adventures.

Maths lessons will continue to focus on fractions, enabling the children to deepen their understanding and proficiency in this area.

In Geography, the focus will shift towards Scandinavian countries in Europe.

Science lessons will introduce a new topic, exploring the structure and function of teeth and the mouth. Through investigations and experiments, the children will gain a deeper understanding of dental health and hygiene.

In R.E, we will continue to explore the topic of salvation and delve into the Easter story

Overall, it has been a productive week with a range of engaging activities and learning experiences. We look forward to another fruitful term ahead, building upon the enthusiasm and progress shown by Year 4.

Year Five

Six weeks of hard work have flown by in Year 5. We hope everyone will have a well-deserved restful break next week.

What we have learnt about this week

This week, in maths, we have been using our previous learning  in order to round decimals to a whole number and a specified number of decimal places.

For English, we have learnt about expanded noun phrases and then used these to write descriptions of characters from our book, Beowulf. The children have worked hard to challenge and extend their vocabulary both in reading and writing.

Our geography work involved investigating some of the physical and human geographical features of North America. The children were quite amazed at some of the physical features such as the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls and the Rocky Mountains.

What we will learn about next week

When we return after half term, we will be learning about percentages in maths. Our science topic about materials and their properties will continue and we will also be continuing to explore the legacy of the Vikings in history lessons.

Year 5 will commence swimming lessons as part of their P.E. curriculum after half term.

Year Six

The children have worked well across the half term, including thier swimming lessons, and thoroughly deserve a rest over the half term.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in maths, the children have completed their focus on fractions, decimals and percentages.  In English, the children examined the features of writing a review and then completed their own reveiw of a hotel.

Our science focus on electricity has come to an end, this work involved the children costing their electrical designs and presenting their 'pitch' to a potential investor.

In geography, the children have explored human and physical features of South America that would attract tourists.  In history, the children have examined the story of Robin Hood, using it to compare and contrast today's justice system with that of the medieval period.

What we will learn about next week

After half term, our first lesson of our new science unit of work (classification), will examine the Linnaean Classification System.  In geography, the children will begin to compare and contrast London with the South American city of Brasilisa.
