23/24 - Spring 2 - Week 2

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

A lot has taken place this week at William Ford!  Below is a brief summary but do scroll further for our new articles that contain pictures and further information.

World Book Day

From Willy Wonka to Harry Potter, I have to say I am incredibly impressed with the efforts undertaken by pupils and staff to celebrate this annual event.  due to the amount of school visits that are taking place this week, we decided to celebrate on Wednesday (it just did not seem fair to make Year Six attend Snaresbrook Crown Court, along with tube travel, in fancy dress!) but nevertheless, the pupils had a fun-filled educational day promoting the benefits of reading and the enjoyment of books.

Snaresbrook Crown Court

As part of our teaching around British Values (rule of law) and our curriculum intent to promote careers for the future, Year Six were offered an incredible opportunity to undertake a court case in Snaresbrook Crown Court. Through learning a script, they were able to experience a variety of roles within the legal profession, from barrister to judge. Through this experience they have developed their understanding of the UK legal system along with the acting skills as they re-enacted a court case.

Lego workshop

Working with Lego is becoming a prominent feature of our newsletter and news articles.  This is because I have seen for myself the engagement and level of concentration Lego can bring and firmly believe using Lego in the classroom can bring about improved skills and knowledge.  I am even looking into providing teacher training around the use of Lego in the classroom.  As part of this, this week some of Year five had the opportunity to attend the London Design and Engineering College in Beckton to undertake a Lego space project - developing their understanding of space junk and the damage this can cause to satellites, spacecraft and the International Space Station.  They also looked at the careers available in the space industry.

Parents Evening/Parent Survey actions

We are delighted with the number of parents who are now attending parents evenings and engaging with their children's education.  Research shows time again that when parents and the school work together in partnership, children benefit.  Following on from the parent survey before Christmas, we also trialled with Year Six providing a print out of how these pupils scored within their recent testing.  The feedback I have had from staff has been exceedingly positive.  I would also be interested in hearing from Year Six parents, as we look to roll this out across the school.  We are also actively working on half-termly curriculum newsletters which will provide an overview of your child's learning for that half-term along with suggestions (not homework) that you can use if you would like to support their education at home.  These should be available just before the Easter break (or just after at the latest).

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mr. David Huntingford

Headteacher

Thank you for everyone who has brought their children to school for the early morning boosters this week. These interventions really do make a difference.

Year 6 parents would have heard from the borough regarding the secondary schools their child has been allocated. If you have not yet received a school, please let us know at office@williamfordschool.co.uk, so we can investigate the notification for you.

Year Three

It's been another very busy week full of learning and exciting experiences for the children. It was lovely to see so many of the pupils dressed up as their favourite book characters too.

What we have learnt about this week

In maths, we finished our maths testing and have started our new unit which focusses on measurement.

In our English lessons we have looed at common and proper nouns, alliteration and onomatopoeia. We were also lucky enough to have a meet and greet session with author / illustrator Sarah Bowie. The children had the opportunity to draw along with her and draw their own illustrations.

We started our new history topic this week and found out about when and where the Ancient Greeks lived.

What we will learn about next week

Next week we continue our work on measurement using millimetres and centimetres, metres.

In English, we will be looking at the features of diary writing, and we will practise using 'a and an' in our grammar lesson.

Next week we will be looking more closely at the layers of the earth in our geography lesson.

Year Four

This week in Year 4 has been an engaging and productive one.

In Maths, the children have delved into a new topic, exploring decimals.

In English, the focus has been on developing inference skills through a character study of the prominent figure, Hiccup, from the book "How to Train Your Dragon."

In Science, collaborative teamwork was fostered as the children worked together to design and craft their own set of teeth. This hands-on activity facilitated a deeper understanding  teeth and their functions.

Geography lessons saw the children engaging in research on the diverse Scandinavian countries, broadening their geographical knowledge

Lastly, in History, the children explored the courageous tale of the heroine, Boudicca, learning about her impactful legacy in British history.

Next week, we will continue to explore decimals in maths. In RE, the children will begin to explore the events that lead up to Jesus' crucifixation and the Easter Story. In English, the children dive deep into the book 'How to train a dragon' to write a narrative piece of work.

Year Five

Year 5 have had another fun and work filled week and are looking forward to a rest at the weekend.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in English, we have been learning about charities; who they support and what they do to support them. The children have had to research and present their findings about different charities to gain a deeper understanding of this. The children have written questions to help them find out about the charity our school supports, Stand By Me.
In maths, we have moved on to our perimeter and area unit, where the children have been finding the perimeter of rectilinear shapes and regular polygons, then finding the area of compound shapes.
The children are really doing well in their swimming lessons and are beginning to be more confident in the water.
In PSHE we are continuing our Healthy Me unit by looking at the effects of alcohol consumption on the human body. It has been interesting.

What we will learn about next week

Next week in English, we have the pleasure of a visitor from the Stand By Me charity coming to answer all of our questions. The children will use the information they gather, along with extra they will research themselves, to create a persuasive leaflet about the charity.
In maths next week, we will be drawing and interpreting different tables and graphs.

Year Six

It has been another busy week for the Year Six children.

What we have learnt about this week

This week, the children began their new English unit of work based on the narrative poem 'The Highwayman'.  They have learnt the events of the poem and also considered key questions they wanted to ask.  They also examined a range of poetic devices used in the poem.   In maths, the children looked at area and perimeter of different shapes.  In science, the children have used classification keys to sort animals and plants; whilst in geography they have compared and contrasted the capital cities of Brasilia and London.  Of course, each of the Year Six classes visited Snaresbrook Crown Court this week.  They thoroughly enjoyed acting out their robbery trial drama within the official surroundings of a crown court as well as meeting some of the people who worked there.

What we will learn about next week

In maths next week, the children will find the area of all triangles, parallelograms and find the volume of a cuboid. In next week's history lesson, the children will be exploring the reasons why punishments became so bloody in the 18th century.  In art, the children will be exploring the work of the artist Frank Bowling. In RE, the children will compare and analyse hymns about Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
