23/24 - Spring 2 - Week 4

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

Christmas and February half-term break may not seem that long a go, but we have reached the end of another term.  This will be the last newsletter of the spring term as pupils will finish school at 1.30pm on Thursday 28th March.

That said, we have an incredibly busy week ahead of us.  On Tuesday 26th April the whole school community, including parents/carers will come together for our annual Easter breakfast with entertainment - including Year Four's retelling of the Easter story.  On Wednesday, the pupils will spend the day looking at our school values, with different year groups focusing on each one, including forgiveness/repentance, service, hope and humility.  Finally, we will be completing our Easter celebrations with different year groups attending church on our final morning before the holidays.  It is our hope prayer that not only will these events be great fun, but will also help us remember, reflect and understand more the sacrifice made by Jesus Christ, son of God, so we can be forgiven for the wrong things we do and that we may have that hope of a future eternity with Him.  Do see below for some events for the whole family being held within the Dagenham area at local churches.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend, school holiday and Easter weekend,

Mr. David Huntingford

Headteacher

This week 'The Orphans of the Tide' by Struan Murray has been recommended. There is a trilogy of books in the series. I have read a range of series of different books and this is my favourite so far. They are adventurous and fun books to read when I am bored.

Year Three

The children have had another busy week and have worked hard in all areas of the curriculum.

What we have learnt about this week

In English this week, the pupils have planned, written and edited their own diary entry about a day in Paris. We were very pleased and impressed with the effort the children put into writing these.

In maths, we have been adding and subtracting length and have introduced perimeter.

In science, we explored using magnets and the children really enjoyed finding out which materials were magnetic.

In R.E. the children were thoroughly engaged with our online tour around the oldest synagogue in London. They asked thoughtful questions and presented their learning in their books.

The children had another fantastic African drumming lesson this week. Their progress has been amazing.

What we will learn about next week

In English, we will be looking at the poem  'The Sound Collector' and thinking about rhyming words.

In maths, we will continue to calculate perimeter, and we will finish our unit on measurement.

In R.E. we will be completing lessons focussing on salvation through the Easter story.

Year Four

This week in year four, the pupils have had another week of exciting learning experiences and extra-curricular activities.

What we have learnt about this week

In English this week, pupils identified features of information brochures. They researched information on Viking Scandinavia. This information will be used to create a persuasive brochure, encouraging people to visit a Scandinavian country.

Our English work this week ties in with our Geography unit, Europe. Pupils used this information to compare London to a Scandinavian capital city.

In maths, pupils have been learning to divide one- and two- digit numbers by 100 to continue their work on decimals.

In RE, pupils completed an assessment to show their understanding of why Christians remember and celebrate Holy Week each year.

What we will learn about next week

In maths next week, pupils will learn how to write money as decimals. This will also include converting money.

The pupils will be wrapping up rehearsals for the Easter play and are excited to perform this at the Eater breakfast.

Please look out for our budding actors and actresses!!

Year Five

During the penultimate week before Easter, we have all been working as diligently as ever in Year 5.

What we have learnt about this week

In English lessons, we have been looking at features of poetry. We have researched  the life and work of Benjamin Zephaniah and used this information to write a mini-biography about him.

Our Maths topic for this term, statistics, concluded with the children interpreting two-way tables and timetables.  If you are travelling by bus or train over Easter, you might like to look out for any timetables with your children.

We have concluded our Geography topic about North America by looking at time zones across the USA.

What we will learn about next week

Next week will be the final swimming session for the children in Year 5.

For Maths we will be recapping our arithmetic skills.

In English we will be exploring the poetry of Benjamin Zephaniah.

Our R.E. for this term will conclude with us looking at salvation and how the Gospels portray the Easter Story.

Year Six

As we head towards the Easter break, it has been pleasing to see the children maintain their focus in all their lessons.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in maths, the children have consolidated their understanding of bar graphs and pie charts.  In English, the children have examined the difference between direct and reported speech.  They have also planned and begun writing a newspaper report telling the story of the Highwayman.  In science, the children have created their own classification keys about a species of animal whilst in P.E. they are continuing to develop their dance skills and techniques.

What we will learn about next week

The children will continue to write and edit their newspaper report in their English lessons next week.  In maths, they will examine angles within shapes, in particular angles within triangles. Next week's  RE .....
