Dear parents and carers,

Welcome back from what I hope was a restful yet enjoyable Easter break.  Much happened in the last week of term, from our school values day to our Easter community breakfast all of which you can read about below.

In addition, as you are reading this our Year 3 and 4 day trip to France will be in full swing - more about this next week!

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Welcome back to a new term. I hope you have all had a fantastic Easter break.

This term we have a few exciting awareness days coming up, which I hope you will join us in celebrating! These are a great way to help raise awareness of different educational needs and for others to understand why children may learn in different ways.

This half-term we will be celebrating Dyslexia Awareness on the week beginning 6th May.

As part of the English curriculum, our Year 5 pupils have the amazing chance to see Frozen the Musical at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Tickets are available on ParentPay and MUST be paid for by Friday 26th April. They are normally £89.00 and have been subsidised by both the theatre and school. The trip is in the afternoon on 2nd May 2024 and children will return by around 6pm.

Please be aware if we are unable to cover the total cost of the tickets. We may be forced to cancel this trip.

Summer Term Menu

We have had a number of pupils changing their lunch order when they approach the counter at lunchtime. Please can you discuss the food choices with your child.

We do NOT serve HALAL meats. Please ensure your child selects something that they are able to eat. They can NOT change their choices later as our catering team prepare and cook everything fresh each day to order.

Year Three

It has been lovely to welcome the children back this week. It seems unbelievable that we have reached the summer term already and have lots of exciting experiences planned for the pupils.

What we have learnt about this week

We have begun our new shared reading book this week called 'Here Comes Hercules', which is an exciting narrative which also compliments our history work on the Ancient Greeks.

In English, we have continued to look at the features of poetry and have planned our own version of the poem 'The Sound Collector.'

In maths, we have introduced our new topic of fractions.

What we will learn about next week

Next week we will continue with our fraction work in maths.

In English, we will be looking at using descriptive language to describe settings.

Our history lesson will focus on Alexander the Great,

Year Four

It has been a fantastic start to Year 4 after the Easter break!

What we have learnt about this week

In English, the children were busy creating Scandinavian brochures, showcasing their writing skills. Meanwhile, in Maths, the students dove into solving money word problems, sharpening their problem-solving abilities.

In Religious Education (R.E.), we started a new topic - 'Kingdom of God'. The children explored this theme by interpreting the story of Pentecost through art, fostering creativity and religious understanding.  In Science, the students immersed themselves in researching various animals and their diets, expanding their knowledge of the natural world.

What we will learn about next week

In English, the children will be delving into a new book, analysing the features of the main character. Geography will see the children comparing two vibrant cities, Paris and London, broadening their geographical awareness. In Art, the students will be honing their sketching skills in the style of Picasso, fostering artistic flair. In Maths, our focus will shift to the concept of Time, enhancing the children's grasp of this fundamental element. Furthermore, in Science, the students will delve into animal food chains, deepening their understanding of ecosystems.

Year Five

What a fantastic start to the summer term! It has been great to welcome back the Year 5 children, and we hope that you had a well rested Easter break!

What we have learnt about this week

This week, in maths, we have introduced angles - the children have worked collaboratively to begin to identify angles such as acute, obtuse, right angles and reflex angles. Our English unit began with introducing our new unit on A Midsummers Nights Dream. We delved into the wonderful life of William Shakespeare and the children have begun to write a biography on his fascinating life. In geography this week, the children have been introduced to their new unit on Rivers. They received a letter from Jon Cruddas asking for help with flooding in the area - over the course of the next term they will become Flood Risk Consultants.

What we will learn about next week

We will continue with looking at angles but with a focus on measuring different angles with a protractor. In History next week, the children will be introduced to their new unit on Baghdad - this unit has great links with our current RE topic Islam.

Year Six

It has been great to be back at school to welcome the Year 6 children in their final term at William Ford!  The Year 6 team would like to thank all the parents for their continued support, particularly in helping the children to find the time and motivation to complete their Easter homework.  This all contributes to the continued progress the children are making as we approach SATs.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in maths, the children have completed their unit of work about angles in a range of shapes.  They also examined the properties of circles.  In English, the children edited their newspaper report that they started before the Easter break.  They then wrote a finished version as their formal writing assessment.  The children have also continued their P.S.H.E. and P.E. lessons this week.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, the children will be completing their final set of assessments in reading, maths, spelling and grammar before their SATs tests in May.  Between now and then, we will, of course, be helping the children revise the key concepts and knowledge in preparation for this.
