23/24 - Summer 1, Week 5

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

Once again, at the time of publishing this newsletter, Year Five and Six should ( I am writing this on Tuesday!) be enjoying their fantastic trip to France!  And what an excellent time to run such an adventure, especially for Year Six!  All week our oldest pupils have been working hard tackling their SATS papers.  They are now complete, and Year Six can enjoy the remainder of their time at William Ford free from this pressure.

A trip to a foreign country is a great way to celebrate all that they have achieved and to provide some much-needed relief after SATS.  Whatever the results may be (and we will not know until early/mid-July), we are incredibly proud of all the hard work from the pupils (and staff), especially those who perhaps have to work and persevere slightly harder than others.  I am incredibly impressed at the number of children who have attended early morning or after-school boosters and those who have undertaken additional work at home.  They deserve to do well and, regardless of what the results may show, their work ethic and determination to work towards success will hold them in good stead for future employment and success throughout the education system.

Well done Year Six!

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mr. David Huntingford

Year Three

We have had another busy yet fun week in Year 3.

What we have learnt about this week

In English the children have planned and written a recount based upon a chapter in the book 'Here comes Hercules'. This will be their assessed piece of writing for this half term. They have also revisited using time conjunctions and then incorporated these in to their written recount.

In maths, the children have begun a unit on telling the time and are really enjoying making different times practically on clocks. They had remembered o'clock and half past well from their Year 2 work but found it more challenging as we moved onto quarter past and to. Please continue to help your child practise telling the time throughout the day at home as all practise is beneficial. We have also looked at Roman numerals as they often appear on clock faces too.

In science, we planned and set up an experiment to prove the function of  a stem and the transportation of water around a plant. We will study the results more closely next week.

In geography we begun our new topic  'Coasts' and in our new R.E. topic, 'Gospel' we learnt about some of Jesus. disciples and what qualities we thought a good disciple would need.

What we will learn about next week

In English we will carefully edit our recount and practise using a and an in grammar.

We will continue to practise telling the time in maths to minute intervals.

In art we will practise botanical sketching and use our shading skills learnt previously.

We will be learning about the Greek gods and goddesses in history and in R.E. we will learn how Jesus was a friend to the friendless.

Year Four

Year 4 have enjoyed a fun-filled week of learning and exploring this week.

What we have learnt about this week

In English, we have been looking at the features of a script. We looked at a script about Boudicca, before the rebellion. Pupils found this exciting and interesting, as this ties in with our history topic, the Romans. They worked collaboratively to share ideas to create their own script based on the uprising of Boudicca.

In maths, we started a new topic of statistics. Pupils learnt how to read and analyse information from a range of different grafts and charts. They also learnt how to create charts from given information.

In geography, we looked at the different layers of the Amazon rainforest. We researched the function of each layer and also the animals which can be found in each different layer.

In science, we continued our topic of living things and their habitats. We had an exciting outdoor lesson to look for a range of living things in their environments, complete with clipboards and magnifying glasses like proper scientists!

What we will learn about next week

In English, we will write and perform a persuasive speech based on Boudicca's rebellion.

In geography, we will work in collaboration to create a collage of the Amazon rainforest.

In History, we will be looking at Roman towns and what they are called today.

In Art, we will make sculptures - based on the artist style of Picasso.

Year Five

We have enjoyed another busy week in Year 5.

What we have learnt about this week

For English we have been thinking about the description and development of characters during writing sessions and how to punctuate direct speech correctly in grammar and punctuation lessons.

In Maths we have extended translating shapes using co-ordinates on the x and y- axes as well as looking at symmetry in shapes. We concluded our learning by reflecting shapes in horizontal and verticil mirror lines.

As part of our History topic on Baghdad we have compared Baghdad in the 9th Century with Anglo-Saxon London. We found many surprising things!

We enjoyed using a range of media to create art-work to explore purpose and imagery.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, we begin to explore decimals in Maths, looking at addition and subtraction and using this to extend our arithmetic skills.

We will be using all the skills we have been developing in English to produce pieces of descriptive writing, including dialogue between characters.

Our Geography topic about rivers will continue with discovering how rivers are used around the world, using our research skills to search for information.

Year Six

At last, SATS are finally behind us!  We encourage all children to fully relax over the weekend after all their hard work this week.

What we have learnt about this week

This week of course, has been SATS testing for the Year 6 children.  We have been incredibly proud of the way all the children have approached their tests.  They have not only put in 100% effort but also really supported each other every day.  It was great to see so many of the children at our SATS breakfasts before school each morning.  These breakfast sessions allowed the children not just the opportunity to eat something to set themselves up for their tests, but it was also a lovely relaxed start to each day for them.  On Thursday afternoon, we celebrated the end of SATS with a party and today the children went to watch a film at the Vue cinema in Dagenham.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, the children will be pleased to get back to their regular teaching timetable with no mention of SATS revision! We will pick up our geographical examination of South America by exploring its trading links with the rest of the world.  In history, the children will examine the growth of prisons as part of their study of crime and punishment.  In art, the children will complete their own piece of work inspired by one of the artists they have studied over this term.  Our science unit of work, based on classification, will come to an end with a final lesson during which the children will design, describe and name a new creature within the Animalia classification.

Each week, staff select three children from each class who have shown effort and commitment to upholding an aspect of our school vision, shown at the bottom of the page. Congratulations to this week’s ‘stars of the week’ for their tremendous endeavours!
