23/24 - Summer 1, Week 6

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

As I am writing this, my office is full of Year Six and Year three pupils who are sorting through four large boxes of brand new LEGO that has been donated to the school.  They are sorting this into our brand new trolley so that we can use LEGO across the curriculum to support learning and engage pupils across numerous subjects.

Meanwhile, our school radio station is keeping us entertained, pupils are enjoying the sports facilities outside my office window that was installed a year ago and the school dinners smell delicious.

To my right is a display board showing numerous photos of the different events we have been able to provide for our pupils, from day trips to France to residentals in Suffolk, Wales and Surrey.

Despite there being numerous challenges in school life - for pupils staff and parents, it is clear that our pupils are very lucky and that this school is blessed.

Community Month

This leads me on nicely to community month.  With the school being blessed in so many ways, it is important that we also act as a blessing to others.  For this reason, every year we hold a Community Month in June where every class is involved in some form of practical service that blesses the local community.  And this year is no exception.  Already we have planned fantastic links with the local community, with Year 3 working on a community project, which involves planning gardens and pollination, progressing to working with Barchester care home to build and establish a community garden! Year 4 will also be working with Barchester, but by specifically bringing courageous advocacy to the residents, by singing, reading and playing board games with the residents. Year 5 will be creating a community event, linked with Dagenham Parish Church, where they will prepare singing, spoken word and poems, as well as refreshments: watch this space. Finally, Year 6 will be showing true community spirit, by helping to run community groups for the elderly and for mothers and toddlers groups, in the local community. We look forward to updating you on the successes of community month!

Enterprise Week

In addition to this, we are also holding our first ever Enterprise Week.  This is where all classes use their business skills to raise money for the Stand By Me children that we sponsor in Colombia. What a worthy cause!  This will be taking place to coincide with Ford Fest.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

This week, 'White Bird' by R.J.Palacio has been recommended. This is a graphic novel which is based around a character from another book called Wonder.

This is a very interesting book which tells the story of a family during World War Two.

Year Three

The children have worked hard this week in a range of subjects. The rainy weather hasn't dampened their enthusiasm, but fingers crossed for sunny weather next week, so the children can get outside and enjoy the half-term break.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in English the children edited their recount writing and practised using the indefinite article 'a and an' correctly.

In maths we consolidate our learning of time, focusing mainly on quarter past and quarter to. We also introduced am and pm.

In geography the children really enjoyed learning about cliff erosion in our 'Coasts' unit.

In R.E. the children learnt how Jesus was a friend to the friendless and considered what this means. They enjoyed taking part in drama  to illustrate their learning too.

We learnt about Greek gods and goddesses in out history lesson.

What we will learn about next week

After half-term we will begin our final shared reading book 'The boy who grew dragons' and we will write a description of a setting based on chapter one. We will also revise using inverted commas accurately.

In maths we will continue our unit on time. Please keep practising at home as this we really help the children to retain their learning.

In R.E. the children will learn about the parable of The Good Samaritan  and consider what we can learn from it.

Year Four

We are so proud of the children in year 4 this week. They have worked extremely hard.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in Year 4, our students have been fully engaged in a range of exciting activities across the curriculum. In English, they have been honing their writing skills by crafting a rally speech in the persona of the legendary Boudicca. Over in Maths, the focus has been on plotting and translating coordinates on graphs. In Geography, the children showcased their creativity by constructing intricate rainforest using arts and crafts materials. In Science, they delved into the world of animal classification, sorting and organising various species into groups.

What we will learn about next week

Next term, we will be continuing our topic in geography, looking at the rainforests around the world. We will also be doing a really creative unit of art, with a focus on illustrating our mini-books, based on an adventure story in the Amazon rainforest.

In maths, we will be focusing on multiplication and then leading into fractions.

In English and Reading, our new book will be 'The Explorer', where we will be following the story of a group of people who crash land deep in the heart of the rainforest!

We will also be having a 'Roman day!' and a exciting visit to Colchester castle in the upcoming term!

We hope you have a fun-filled, restful half term break.

Year Five

What a great week it has been in Year 5 despite the rainy weather at the beginning of this week.

What we have learnt about this week

In maths this week, we have been converting different units of measurement from cm,m,km,g,kg,ml,l - it has been a lot of converting this week but this children have worked extremely well. In English, we have been blown away by the children's short stories they have produced. They have listened extremely well and have included lots of descriptions of settings and characters.

What we will learn about next week

After the half term break, the children will begin their new maths unit on decimals. This is our penultimate unit in maths and one of the most important. There will be huge focus on adding and subtracting decimals with the same and different numbers of decimal places. In English, we will begin to read our new class book called 'The Nowhere Emporium. In Science, we will begin our new unit on Plants - this is a newly planned unit with lots of exciting hands on investigations!

Year Six

It has been a great week for Year 6 as we get back into the swing of having the full range of curriculum subjects being taught.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in geography, we have concluded our work on South America by examining the impact of Brazil hosting the 2016 Olympic Games.  In history, the children have examined changes in crime rates over time and the possible influences upon this data.  In science, the children have started their new unit based on the human circulatory system; in particular they focussed on the components of blood.  In English, the children have started their editing unit of work.  During these sessions, they will go back through selected work completed earlier in the school year and complete an editing and improving process on it.  This week, the children examined a piece of work from September and many were really pleased to see how much progress they had made since then.

What we will learn about next week

After the half-term break, our science lesson will focus on the role of the heart within the circulatory system.  In geography, we will begin our final unit of work which is based on the local area.  In art, our next focus is photography, whilst in history we will make links with our geography work by examining the history of the local area.
