23/24 - Summer 2, Week 2

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

Pupils making a difference

This week I had the privilege of welcoming our new Year Three parents to school.  This is one of my favourite events as prepping for it reminds me of all of the wonderful things we offer to the pupils of William Ford.  But this year's event was even more special because our pupils actually stepped up and led significant part of our first afternoon meeting.  We had children performing a dance, others singing whilst others led a tour for parents to enjoy.  All of this shows incredible confidence and strength of character from our pupils who I am sure also enjoyed this experience.

This is not the only way in which our pupils have displayed these attributes. As part of our community month work, we have had Year Four children attending our local care home to sing, read and play games with the residents.  You can read more about this below.

You spoke; we listened

A few months back you may remember I shared with you the results of our parent survey.  Whilst these were very positive, two key development areas for us were to provide further information about what pupils are learning in class and to provide some guidance on how this can be supported at home.  Our curriculum leaders have been working very hard on this, and I am pleased to share this information is now available on our website.  Currently, we have the summer term complete and, by the end of the academic term we will have the autumn term ready for you to view.

To access our curriculum summary, please click here: William Ford Junior School - Curriculum summaries for parents (and how you can support at home). (williamfordschool.co.uk).  You can choose which year group you want to view by clicking on the link to the left.  There are then further links for how you can support/follow-up at home displayed to the left of this page.  Please note, currently we only have summer term completed.

This does not change the school's position on not setting homework but hopefully provides guidance to those families where children are keen to further develop their knowledge and understanding at home.

Driving onto the school site

Parents/carers, we recognise the challenge of parking within the local area, especially as the local authority has installed a rigorously enforced controlled parking zone around the school.  Currently, we do turn a blind eye when parents use our car park for very quick drop offs and collections providing these are well outside of the school's times of drop off and collection.  However, the standard of driving recently has been causing us some concern.  If you MUST use the school car park, please drive slowly and considerately and do not mount the payments or grass areas.  Thank you.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

This week 'The Day I fell into a Fairytale' by Ben Miller has been recommended.

The Day I Fell Into a Fairytale is a magical adventure about the power of stories. I loved this book because it consisted of a different range of fairytales all mixed into one.

Year Three

The children have been busy learning across the curriculum this week.

What we have learnt about this week

In maths, we have continued our topic on mass. We have looked at measuring in grams and kilograms and have compared the mass of different objects. The children especially enjoyed the practical tasks where they experienced measuring mass using different types of scales.

In English, children have revised subordinating conjunctions in grammar. They have predicted and written their own scenarios for the next chapter in our book, and they have planned and written a persuasive argument for keeping a dragon as a pet, giving clear reasons for and against.

In history, children learnt about various Ancient Greek philosophers and created their own fact card based on one of their choice.

In French, we have begun our unit on transport and in science we are learning about seed dispersal.

What we will learn about next week

In maths next week we will be moving on to capacity and volume and introducing the children to litres and millilitres.

In English, we will learn about imperative verbs and use these in instructional writing.

In art, the children will be designing a sculpture fit for King Charles' garden.

Year Four

It has been another great and eventful week in year 4!

What we have learnt about this week

In Year 4 this week, for maths our focus has been on times tables to enhance our mathematical skills. In English, the children have begun crafting the opening scene of an exciting adventure story. In history year 4 had the opportunity to visit Colchester Castle, where we delved into the world of Roman history. In Religious Education, we started a new topic on 'The Fall', focusing on the narrative of Adam and Eve to understand the concept of sin. It has been a week brimming with immersive learning experiences.

What we will learn about next week

Next week in Year 4, our students will revisit  fractions to enhance their learning and understanding of mathematical concepts. In English, they will continue writing their imaginative adventure stories, fostering their creativity  skills. In (R.E), the children will  explore the story of Adam and Eve, prompting them on what questions they would ask .

In Geography, year 4  will investigate the diverse levels of rainfall experienced in the Amazon rainforest, giving them a  deeper insight into the geographical features and climatic conditions.

Year Five

Another week has flown by and Year 5 have been busy.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in maths, we have been looking at decimals. The children have become very competent at adding and subtracting decimals. We have looked at a variety of strategies to perform these calculations and found the most efficient method.

In English, we are still reading the amazing Nowhere Emporium, getting to know the characters and the setting well. We have taken part in some drama in order to help gather ideas for interesting sentences. The children used different sentence starters to help make their writing more interesting for the reader.

During our geography lesson this week, the children found out about the problems that occur when flooding happens. The children were able to write a report about the devastating effects on communities when this natural disaster occurs.

What we will learn about next week

Next week in maths the children will be learning how to multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000, looking at how a strong knowledge of place value helps us to do this.

In English, the children will be using events in the Nowhere Emporium as inspiration to help them understand what makes a good newspaper report. They will even get to roleplay being a reported, asking questions to eye witnesses.

In our music lessons, we will continue to look at musical theatre. We will be focussing on how stories are told through songs.

Year Six

It has been another busy week for our Year 6 children as they continue working hard across a range of curriculum subjects.

What we have learnt about this week

This week, the children have worked hard planning their warning story in English.  In geography, they have examined the use of scale in maps and used this to measure distances between two points on a map.  In our history unit exploring the local area, the children have researched different significant historical buildings and presented their findings to the rest of the class.  The children have continued to act maturely in the PSHE lessons focussing on sex education.  The whole year group were lucky enough to go to Romford as part of their Junior Citizen visit.  During this, they took part in a range of activity stations ranging from first aid, being safe on trains and buses, fire safety through to learning what can and cannot be flushed down the toilet into our sewage system!

What we will learn about next week

Next week, the children will write up their warning stories in English.  In science, we will explore how the human circulatory system works.  In history, the children will begin to learn about the founder of our school, William Ford, whilst in R.E. the children will begin their new unit of work based on Sikhism.
