23/24 - Summer 2, Week 3

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

We are now coming up to the half-way point through the summer term.  Finally, the weather is changing with the sun beginning to shine and, hopefully, the recent rainstorms becoming a distant memory!

As the weather begins to show signs of transition, so we here at William Ford begin our plans for next year.  Teachers are beginning to prepare for their new classes.  Our 24-25 year three team are liaising with Village Infants to ensure a seamless transition whilst other staff are beginning to make plans for their new cohorts.  We are also beginning meetings with secondary schools to ensure our year six leavers are afforded the same experience with their transition.

Just to remind you that, similar to previous years, we will mix up the classes at the end of year 3 and year 5.  This is to ensure our classes remain balanced in terms of ability, additional needs and behaviour and to ensure our pupils gain the opportunity to work with a range of other children and to increase their peer group.

Parents of our current year four pupils will remember that we did not mix the classes last year.  This was due to the amount of turbulence within staffing that one class had experienced.  Now that this is more settled, we also plan to mix the year four classes as these pupils have been in the same class since early years at Village Infants.

Pupils will find out who their new teacher is in early July.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mr. David Huntingford

Headteacher

Please continue to read at home with your children at home and practice their times tables with them. This is a skill for life and will support them in their lessons at school.

Year Three parents do not forget next Friday is Greek day at William Ford.

It will be lovely if all of the children in year three could please come to school wearing a Greek inspired outfit. This can be made easily at home, there are plenty of ideas on the internet.

This week 'The Nothing to see Here Hotel' by Steve Butler has been recommended.  This is the first book in the series and is good for using your imagination. It is full of fun and adventures.

Year Three

This year the children have been focusing on completing their summer term assessments in reading, grammar, arithmetic, mathematical reasoning, spelling and R.E.

What we have learnt about this week

Despite working hard on our assessments, we have still had time to balance these with our other subjects too.

In maths, we have introduced capacity and measuring in litres and millilitres.

In science, we have looked at various types of seed dispersal and also looked at the life cycle of a dandelion.

In geography, the children have had the opportunity to develop their map skills through comparing Dagenham and Walton.

In French, we are continuing to learn words based round forms of transport.

We have introduced a new music unit, 'Ballards', which the children are really enjoying.

What we will learn about next week

In maths, we are continuing with capacity.

In English, we will be focussing on the features of instructional writing.

In science, we are hoping to plant our own seeds  and consider what a plant needs to remain healthy.

In history, we will be learning about the story of The Trojan Horse and considering whether it was a myth or fact. We will also be celebrating Greek Day by dressing up and enjoying Greek activities, food and drama.

Year Four

This week, Year 4 have been continuing their enterprise project, based around the rainforest and our book: The Explorer, as well as building towards Roman day on Friday.

What we have learnt about this week

This week, pupils have been working hard on their creative writing skills in English, as the pupils continue their studies based around the rainforest and our book: The Explorer. Pupils have been writing setting descriptions, as well building tension and suspense.

In maths, we have been learning about fractions and developing and progressing our skills and knowledge of fractions.

In Science, the pupils became scientists, whilst using their prior knowledge of classification to build branching databases about living things.

In RE, pupils looked at the story of Adam and Eve, as they began their new unit on 'The Fall'. We had lots of great conversations as the pupils devised questions based on what they would ask Adam, Eve, as well as God!

What we will learn about next week

Next week, in maths, we will be continuing our unit on fractions.

In Literacy, we will be writing the beginning, middle and end of our adventure story, based on a plane crash landing in the middle of the Amazon Rainforest.

In history, we will be looking at Roman food and the style and culture of the Roman times.

Year Five

It has been a fantastic week in Year 5. The children have worked diligently when completing their first round of assessments.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in maths, we have focused on multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000. We have shown the children efficient strategies in order to answer questions. In English, the children have been identifying features of a newspaper and have taken on the role of a journalist to gather information from eye witnesses. In PE, the children have started preparing for sports day in July. They have practised throwing javenlins and sprinting. In History, they have been researchign significant discoveries which took place during the Islamic Golden Age in Baghdad.

What we will learn about next week

Next week in maths, we will begin our negative number unit where children will be finding the different between negative numbers and positive numbers. In English, the children will be planning their newspaper report based on the arrival of the Nowhere Emporium. Theirs plans will include planning their opening paragraph focusing on the 5 W's and planning their detailed information paragraph. In Science, the children will be looking into the life cycles of insects and amphibians and recognising when they go through metamorphises.

Year Six

It has been a great week for the Year 6 children who have had a focus on their technology curriculum.

What we have learnt about this week

This week, all the Year 6 children have focussed on their technology work.  They were invited by cook to research and present some new recipes that could potentially be incorporated into the school dinner menu in the next academic year.  The children then worked in small groups to research and plan a three-course meal.  Next, each class went shopping for the ingredients at Lidl at the Heathway.  Once back at school, they had to follow their recipe instructions to make their dishes.  Of course, cook was invited to sample their culinary creations; she was amazed at the ideas for the meals, the presentation of the dishes and, of course, how delicious they were! Thank you to the many parents who contributed £1 to help fund the buying of the ingredients.  Also this week, class 6B went to Dagenham Parish Church as part of our community month. After taking part in the church's Wednesday service, half of the class went litter-picking in the church grounds whilst the other half of the class stayed with the members of the church group for a chat.  The whole class represented the school brilliantly, and Mr Edwards contacted the school to share his appreciation of the excellent behaviour and great work the children did.

What we will learn about next week

Next week in science, the children will be exploring the effect of lifestyle choices on the health of their bodies.  In R.E. they will begin exploring the Sikh concept of God.  Next week, we shall also continue practising for the upcoming Year 6 end of term production.
