23/24 - Summer 2, Week 6

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

iRockSchool

At the end of last week, just after the previous newsletter had been written, the school came together for a fantastic musical concert where children from across the school showcased their musical talents.  With the support of our peripatetic music provider, iRockSchool, children performed a number of well-known hits in rock bands that spanned across year groups including singing, keyboards, drums, bass and guitars.  In addition, Lighthouse children performed beautifully, including signing and African drumming along with some Makaton signing too.

We even had a special performance from our very own staff band - who had only formed 30 minutes previous to the concert!  You can read more about this below.

Year Six Leavers' Festival

Yesterday we had the opportunity to celebrate with our Year Six's who leave us at the end of this school year.  From axe throwing to football; popcorn to candy floss, there was much for them to enjoy.  And the sun even made an appearance too!

Transition

As we prepare to say good bye to Year Six, today we welcomed our new year three cohort to the school.  In addition, children found out who their new teacher and class would be next year.  For your information, here is where each teacher will be next year.

At the end of this year, we will be saying a temporary goodbye to Mrs Freeland.  As many of you will be aware, Mrs Freeland is pregnant and will be beginning her maternity leave at the start of the summer holidays.  I am sure you will all want to join me in assuring Mrs Freeland of our love and prayers for the safe arrival of her baby and all the best for the early days of parenting.  Mrs Freeland will return to school later in the academic year.

SATs results

I am delighted to share that William Ford has received its best set of SATS results in about 6 years and we are now back to being above national average!  Many of you will be aware of the numerous changes that have taken place across the school over the past few years.  As these changes now embed into the school, it is great to be able to see how these are benefitting our pupils, as William Ford continues to go from strength to strength.  The school's overall results can still change slightly through appeals and remarking so I cannot present a fuller picture until September/October.  Parents of year six children will receive a copy of their individual results within their school report next week.

Needless to say, I am incredibly proud of the pupils and whole staff team who have guided the children to achieve high results.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

This week 'Future Transport in Space' by Steve Parker' has been recommended. This book looks at today's most advanced technology and shows how it may be used in the future to explore our solar system. I found this book very interesting to read.

Year Three

Another very busy week in year Three draws to a close and the end of the school year is fast approaching.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in maths we have looked at the properties of 2D and 3D shapes and have been introduced to turns and angles.

In English we learnt about adverbs of manner and we also planned and wrote our final writing assessment, an explanation text for looking after a dragon.

In geography we used the data collected on our trip to Walton to create bar charts and answer questions based on this.

In R.E. we discussed promises and created our own promises to improve our school and environment.

The children all got to meet their new Year 4 teacher this morning, so hopefully, they will now feel more settled for next year.

What we will learn about next week

Next week we will continue to look at shape and angles in maths.

We will be continuing and hopefully finishing our shared reading book 'The Boy who Grew Dragons', which the children are thoroughly enjoying.

In R.E. we will be writing our final assessment piece, carefully illustrating what we have learnt.

Next week we have also got Sports Day on Wednesday morning, so please allow your children to bring their PE kit on that day.

Year Four

It has been another busy and productive week in year 4

What we have learnt about this week

This week in English, our Year 4 students have been delving into research on the Amazon rainforest, exploring its rich biodiversity and importance. In Maths, they have been sharpening their skills on telling time, mastering both analogue and digital clocks. Over in French lessons, the children have been immersing themselves in the vibrant cultures of France, learning about French cuisine and music. Meanwhile, in Geography, we have been busy crafting informative posters on the impact of palm oil production. It has been an engaging and educational week full of diverse learning experiences for our Year 4 students.

What we will learn about next week

Next week in English, Year 4 will be engaging in a writing task focusing on creating an information text based on their research about the Amazon Rainforest. They will be honing their writing skills and incorporating key facts into their work. In Maths, children will be diving into the world of money, learning about different coins and notes as well as how to make transactions. In their French lessons, pupils will explore countries in Europe, expanding their language skills and cultural knowledge. Additionally, in Geography, children will get creative by crafting 3D rainforest sculptures using recycled materials in a junk modelling activity.

Year Five

Year Six

It's been another busy week for the Year 6 children as they approach their final few weeks at William Ford.

What we have learnt about this week

This week, classes 6B and 6F were able to visit a Gurdwara in Barking as part of our work on Sikhism in R.E.  Our host was very welcoming, and the children showed a genuine interest in his answers to their questions and also to the different things he pointed out to us.  In science, the children have begun to examine the impact of diet and exercise on the human body.  In geography, the children have begun to think of their enquiry questions in preparation for their visit to Dagenham Heathway.  After school on Thursday, the children enjoyed their Year 6 leavers' festival during which they spent time together playing a variety of games, eating candy floss and popcorn and even having a bounce around on a  bouncy castle.

What we will learn about next week

Next week is going to be extremely busy for the Year 6 children.  As well as continuing with the final lessons across our curriculum, the children will have their final sports day at William Ford, their final Ford Fest and also perform their production to the rest of the school.

Each week, staff select three children from each class who have shown effort and commitment to upholding an aspect of our school vision, shown at the bottom of the page. Congratulations to this week’s ‘stars of the week’ for their tremendous endeavours!
