Newsletters

Spring 1 Week 5

{alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

Welcome to our new style newsletter!  As part of our continuing modernisation of William Ford and the embracement of technology, I am delighted that many of you who have installed the app would have just received a ‘ping’ alerting you to our latest update.  Hopefully this should make this easier to read (it also makes it much easier to produce)!  Our newsletter does receive much praise (thank you for that) but we do also receive some questions – namely why is it weekly, and why does it have so much information?  The reason for this is that we do aim to be a school that is not constantly bombarding families with letters but rather try to contain all relevant information in one place, in one publication.  We have also received feedback in the past about parents wanting further information about what the pupils have been learning in the past week, along with the upcoming learning hence this is also included.  We do hope you will find this new style more useful.

We also have a survey open at the moment regarding communication and parent workshops - we would be very grateful if every family could complete this by clicking here: https://forms.office.com/e/B6FjsjBPp6

Finally, although we have had a pause with our building works (set to continue on 8th March 2023), we have been enjoying a much more structured approach to lunch times including organised football, small world toys and even dressing up.  Not only was this lots of fun, but there was a drastic reduction in disagreements as well.  My thanks to Mrs Legg for co-ordinating and to the lunchtime team for sharing their ideas.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mr. David Huntingford

Headteacher

On Friday 10th February 2023, William Ford pupils recognised Children's Mental Health Day by wearing their own clothes to school. Children took part in activities to help them understand the importance of having good mental health as well as good physical health. This day was arranged by pupils in 6I as part of the PSHE curriculum.

This week the staff and pupils of William Ford surprised our headteacher Mr Huntingford.

On Tuesday they helped him celebrate a significant birthday with a cake prepared by our catering team and a verse or two of Happy Birthday.

We hope you had a lovely birthday!

This week's book recommendation by Emmanuel 6T.

I recommend the book 'The Whispering Stone' by Saviour Pirotta because it is an exciting book with lots of events and action. I started to read this book on Monday and I only have 4 pages left! I will return it to the library once I have finished it. Who will be next to read this?

Year Three

This week, Year Three have been researching and writing their own non-chronological reports, based around a country of their choice. The children have been using the ipads and laptops to complete research on their chosen country. They have included information such as physical and human features and have also found about cultural aspects such as food and sport. We look forward to reading their fascinating reports. In maths, the children have continued their work on multiplication and division, concentrating on work based around the four and eight times table. Keep practising those facts Year Three. In history the children have come to the end of their work on ancient civilisations including Ancient Egypt. They have looked at similarities between Egypt and Ancient Sumer, the Indus Valley Civilisation and the Shang Dynasty. They have also thought about why civilisations develop close to rivers. I wonder if they could explain this to you. Science has seen the children continuing their work as geologists, looking at how fossils are formed. They were interested to discover that they only form in sedimentary rock.  After this busy week, the children are looking forward to a peaceful and restful half-term.

Year 4

This week in Year 4, the pupils have had another action-packed week, with the culmination of our literacy unit ending with our pupils writing recipes and instructions for their very own marvellous medicine, as part of their assessment. Year 4 also continued their learning of calculation in maths, learning how to divide 2-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers. As well as this, pupils also took part in a dramatisation of the 'Last supper', as part of our Salvation unit in RE. Pupils learnt about the beginning events of Holy week and the specifics about the last supper, as well as splitting into smaller groups and acting out the last supper, breaking the bread and sharing the wine (juice!). This was really exciting and generated some excellent discussion. In technology this week, the children had the opportunity to put their recent science learning about electrical circuits into a meaningful context by designing and making a torch with a working switch.  The children thoroughly enjoyed this task and an impressive range of torches were made.  We really hope you have a restful half-term break and we very much look forward to seeing you in a weeks time, refreshed and ready for another fun-filled half-term!

Year Five

We have been full steam ahead in Year 5 this week! As we come to the end of our study of 'Beowulf', the children have written some fantastic character descriptions based on the hero and villain of the book - Beowulf and Grendel. They have used their prior knowledge of expanded noun phrases and relative clauses to make their descriptions sound interesting. We have started our new maths unit on fractions this week - we have look at multiplying unit and non-unit fractions by an integer. The children have showed great knowledge and retention of their timetable facts this week. In PSHE, the children have been thinking about their dream jobs for the future and the steps they need to take in order to get their. They have created PowerPoint presentations where they presented their ideal job to the rest of the class. Aspirations are high in Year five - we have future data analysts, pilot engineers and architects at William Ford. We have continued with our DT unit on Structures and, for the past week, children have been created truss bridges out of spaghetti. Many apologies to the parents that find dried spaghetti in their child's pockets! The Year Five team hope you and your children have a restful and safe half-term.

Year Six

This week in year six, children have been working hard completing assessments in reading, grammar and maths. Next 1/2 term in maths, childre will focus on statistics where they will look at interpreting data from bar charts, pie charts and line graphs.  In English this week, children have written diary entries as part of their assessment from the perspective of the main character Ruby. The children applied their understanding of the book 'When the Mountains Roared' to write about key events Ruby experienced when moving to India. In Spring 2, children will being a unit on poetry focusing on the narrative poem The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. In art this week, children edited their photographs from last lessons by either cropping their background or adjusting the colours. In the next lesson, children will explore the work of Derrick O. Boateng and deign their own music album cover. In computing this week children explored Internet Safety as part of Internet Safety Day. Children worked collaboratively to discuss different tech milestones and consolidated how to be safe online.
