24/25 - Autumn 1, Week 3

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us online for our 'Meet the SLT' coffee morning. It was wonderful to see so many of you engaging with us, asking very insightful questions. We hope the session gave you a deeper understanding of our school, its Christian ethos, curriculum, policies, and our reflections following the recent Ofsted inspection. Your input is always valued, and we look forward to further conversations.

This week, Year Five and Year Six had a very informative talk from the Metropolitan Police on staying safe online. In a world where our children are increasingly connected, it's important to keep an eye on what they are doing online, including their activity on mobile phones. Please take the time to discuss internet safety with your children and ensure appropriate settings are in place.

Next week, we are excited to host our Times Tables Rockstar Day! Pupils are invited to come to school dressed as rockstars and will spend the day sharpening their times tables skills. It promises to be a fun and productive day, so we look forward to seeing everyone in their rockstar gear, ready to conquer their multiplication facts!

In Collective Worship, we have been focusing on the story of Jonah (Jonah 1:17–2:10), learning how God rescued Jonah, even after he turned his back on Him. The story reminds us of God's boundless grace and mercy. Just as Jonah found himself in a difficult situation of his own making, we, too, can stray from what is right. Yet, God remains steadfast, ready to rescue and guide us back onto the right path when we call on Him.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mr. David Huntingford

Totally Wacky Facts about Modern History by Cari Meister

I remember reading this book in year 2. There were 3 facts I really liked:

1. Queen Elizabeth I had more than 2000 dresses.

2. Men had to wear hats on Sundays.

3. Queen Elizabeth never got married.

Year Three

It is lovely to see how well the Year Three children are settling in to the routines of our school so well and fully embracing their learning.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in maths, we estimated using number lines and compared and ordered numbers to 1000. The children have shown a good understanding of most of these concepts.

In English, we have looked a prepositions in our grammar lesson. The children have also formulated their own questions about the Sphinx and tried to research the answers on the internet. We have also planned a setting description using our 5 senses, based on our book set in Egypt.

In history, we found out when and where different ancient civilisations developed and this improved our understanding of chronology.

In RE, we discussed how, in the Bible, God gave instructions on how to take care of the world, and we thought about our ideas to help  look after animals and our environment.

The children put lots of effort into their first ballet lesson today and really enjoyed learning their first steps. Ask them for a demonstration.

What we will learn about next week

We will be undertaking assessments in reading, maths, arithmetic, grammar and spelling next week. The results of these will help to plan  more effectively and ensure the children get the support that they need as the term progresses.

In maths, we will begin our next topic: addition and subtraction.

Our next grammar lesson will focus on the past progressive tense, and we will continue to develop our creative writing skills.

In geography, we will discover some of the geographical features of the different continents, such as population and landmass.

In our science lesson,  the children will be learning about different food groups and discussing the importance of a balanced diet.

Year Four

Year Four has had a very busy and exciting week this week.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in Reading, we have continued following the journey of our main characters, Nell and Cave Bear.

In English, we started the week off by consolidating our learning of how to use Fronted Adverbials. With this prior learning, we could write a paragraph to describe a mammoth, making sure our sentences start with a Fronted Adverbial. Later in the week, we used our research skills to retrieve and record information about mammoths. We used this information to construct our own information leaflets.

In maths, we continued our work on Place Value, looking at comparing and ordering numbers up to ten thousand. In Science, we learnt how to use classification keys to classify animals correctly.

In RE, we wrote a newspaper article on the events that happened in The Garden of Eden.

We have also started to complete some assessments this week.

What we will learn about next week

We will continue our assessments next week.

In Geography, we will be learning about the human and physical features of India.

In Science, we will be looking at how to group plants.

Year Five

Year 5 have had a fun-filed, action-packed week this week and we encourage you to ask your children and talk to them about their learning to consolidate their understanding.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in Reading and English, pupils have been looking at the emotions and feelings experienced by our main characters in our book: Hidden Figures. Pupils have been learning how to select key events and then summarise them, as well as looking at the motives and viewpoints of key characters' actions.

In maths, pupils have been using place value to solve rounding problems, rounding large numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000 and even 10,000!

In History, pupils studied and explored Anglo-Saxon settlements, discussing the basic needs of where to build a settlement. Following this, pupils made a plan and then used loge resources to design and build their own Anglo-Saxon settlements.

In Science, pupils looked at the motion of planets, comparing the orbital periods of the 8 planets in our solar system. Following this, pupils created a graph to show the different orbital periods in Earth years.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, pupils will begin their new topic in maths: addition and subtraction. In English, pupils will be looking at the features of biographies. In RE pupils will be looking at and comparing religious values and beliefs and discussing and deciding what beliefs and values the world cannot live without. In Science, pupils will be looking at the differences our planet has gone through over the years.

We will also be doing some assessments next week, to assess where the pupils are currently working at. We hope you have a great weekend!

Year Six

It has been another busy week for the children and again the Year 6 staff have been pleased with the work and behaviour of so many of the pupils.

What we have learnt about this week

In English this week, the children have created a wanted poster for the villain Mr Spink from the children's novel Street Child.  In maths, the children have worked on developing their knowledge of common factors and common multiples.  As part of their art lessons, the children have created some observational sketches of patterns created by the Victorian artist William Morris.  The children were also visited by a police officer who spoke to them about the importance of being safe online.  We encourage you to discuss this visit with your child to reinforce the important information discussed during the workshop.

What we will learn about next week

Next week in English, the children will explore the importance of using dialogue to move action forwards in narrative writing.  In geography, the children will research the essential information needed by climbers wanting to climb Mount Everest.  In R.E. the children will begin to explore the connections some Christians make between their faith and the Big Bang Theory.  The children will also begin making their Victorian waistcoats in preparation for our Victorian Day which will be held after the October half-term.
