24/25 - Autumn 1, Week 4

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

What a wonderful week we've had, despite the challenges of the weather! Our children have shown exceptional behaviour during the many wet breaks, remaining calm, engaged, and supportive of each other even when unable to go outside. It’s truly commendable how well they’ve adapted, and we couldn’t be prouder of them.

We’re also delighted to announce the start of our harvest celebrations. This year, we are collecting donations for local foodbanks. If you’re able to contribute, we would be grateful for any items you can spare, but please do not feel pressured if you are struggling yourself. Every little helps, but we understand that not everyone is in a position to give.

Times Tables Rock Star Day was a fantastic success! It was great to see so many pupils (and staff!) dressed as rockstars, but even more impressive was how hard everyone worked on their times tables. Well done to all! Don’t forget to keep practising and logging on at home to strengthen those skills.

In Collective Worship, our focus on Jonah continues, and this week we have been reflecting on Jonah 3:1-5. These verses remind us that Jonah was given a second chance by God to listen and follow His call, just as we are often given second chances in life. Jonah’s story shows us the importance of listening to God and obeying when we are called to act. It’s a powerful reminder that no matter how many times we might fall short, God’s grace offers us the opportunity to turn things around, make the right choices, and grow through the lessons we learn.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mr. David Huntingford

What a week we have had!

The Zen Bus was a great experience for our year 3 and selected year 6 children. They focused on mindset and breathing techniques to help when they are feeling overwhelmed.

Some children went on an exciting trip to Billings Gate Market to take part in a cooking workshop. It was a great day for everyone.

Photos of both of these events are on the school website- please take a look.

As we continue to prioritise the health and safety of our students, we want to remind you to please ensure that all asthma inhalers and asthma care plan and any prescribed medication for your child are brought to the school office. Having these on hand is crucial for managing asthma symptoms and ensuring that your child can fully participate in school activities.

If you have any questions or need assistance with this process, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the school office. Thank you for your cooperation.

Transport on land, road and rail by Eryl Davies.

I love this book and would recommend it because it's all about the history and future of trains. You can see the timeline of all trains made. I love the underground section and the images of corridors and tunnels. They look cool. My favourite part is the magnetic trains and levitation trains.

Year Three

It has been a busy week in Year Three and the children have been working really hard on the various assessments they have been set this week.

What we have learnt about this week

Although much of our week has been taken up with testing we have still managed to fit lots of exciting lessons in too.

In grammar, the children were introduced to the past progressive verb tense which will assist them in their upcoming story writing.

In science,  the children have found out more about the five food groups and what they provide for our bodies.

In R.E. we looked at what  some Christians do to help follow God's instructions to look after and be caretakers of our world.

In geography, we have found out about specific features of each continent, such as the longest river and largest country.

The children enjoyed their second ballet lesson today and are showing great progress already.

What we will learn about next week

In maths next week we are moving on to our new topic 'addition and subtraction'.

In English, we will be considering what is needed to write an adventure story. We will discuss setting and plot. The children will then plan and write their own adventure story.

In science,  the children will use their prior learning to write a healthy  meal plan for a member of staff.

We will have our first history lesson introducing the Ancient Egyptians.

Year Four

It has been another great week in year 4

What we have learnt about this week

In English, children have been using noun phrases to craft their own setting descriptions, showcasing their creativity and writing skills.

In Maths, they have been learning how to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100, and 1000, which has enhanced their number sense.

In R.E., the focus was on the Ten Commandments, where the children explored their significance and relevance in our lives today. In History, the children enquired about prehistoric achievements, discussing their importance and impact on modern society.

Additionally, the children completed their assessments this week, and we are pleased with the brilliant effort.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, children will start writing  their adventure stories, allowing their creativity to flourish.

In Maths, we will introduce a new topic focusing on addition and subtraction, helping to reinforce their numerical skills.

In Geography, the class will explore the physical and human features of India, broadening their understanding of diverse cultures and landscapes.

In Science, we will study the classification of plants, deepening their knowledge of the natural world.

Additionally, in Religious Education, we will discuss the theme of forgiveness, encouraging thoughtful reflection among the students.

Year Five

What a busy week Year 5 have had! We have been completing tests this week; reading, maths and grammar papers. Well done to all.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in English, we have started to look at biographies. The children have been looking at biographies and identifying common features. It has been great to see their previous knowledge helping them to do this.

In maths this week, the children have been using their arithmetic skills to work out additions with numbers larger than 1000. They have been using the formal column method, making sure to line up the digits in the correct place value columns.

In science this week, all three classes had a great time finding out about the phases of the moon. They then had to write their understanding and even got to use Oreos to show their understanding. Great fun was had by all!

What we will learn about next week

Next week in English, the children will be continuing to work on biographies, planning, writing and editing one about a character from our text, ‘Hidden Figures’.

In maths, the focus will be on adding and subtracting whole numbers with more than four digits, along with using the inverse and rounding to check answers.

Year Six

The Year 6 children have continued to work hard this week.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in English, the children completed their first writing assessment in which they planned and wrote a piece of narration that included description and dialogue.  In maths, the children have moved on to formal long multiplication.  A number of the children needed guidance with this, so it would be beneficial for them to perhaps have further practice at home.  In geography, the children used their research skills to find out information that mountain climbers would need before taking on the challenge of climbing Mount Everest.  In history, the children have been examining photographs from the Victorian era and working out what information they can give us.

What we will learn about next week

Next week in English, the children will explore how authors develop the setting in their descriptions.  They will use this knowledge to write their own description of a Victorian workhouse.  In history, the children will examine a range of sources of information about Victorian workhouses and decide how reliable each source is.  In DT the children will continue making their waistcoats in anticipation for our Victorian Day.
