24/25 - Autumn 1, Week 6

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

We are thrilled to share the fantastic news that our recent visit from the Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM) assessor was a resounding success! We have proudly retained our Centre of Excellence status. This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of all our pupils and staff, and we are incredibly grateful to those parents who spoke so passionately about the school and the inclusive support we provide. Your contributions truly made a difference!

Inclusion at our school goes beyond supporting special educational needs (though this remains an important focus). It is about ensuring that every individual across our school community feels valued and catered for. We are committed to meeting the needs of all our students, helping them thrive in every aspect of school life. We look forward to sharing the full report with you once it is published—it's a wonderful reflection of the positive impact we are making together.

On the same day, we were visited by the local authority who were interested in our careers provision and the difference this makes to our pupils. They were amazed by how we raise aspirations and provide opportunities for pupils to explore various career paths through their work. This recognition is a proud moment for us, and we are excited to strengthen our partnership with the local authority, benefiting both our school and the wider community.

You may have noticed on our website homepage a whole new section dedicated to our Lego Education. This provision is just another facet that makes our school so special, supporting children in their educational journey through creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on learning. Be sure to read our news article below to learn more about this exciting program and explore our dedicated page on our website here.

This week in Collective Worship, we focused on Jonah 4, where Jonah struggles with God’s compassion towards the people of Nineveh. Through this story, we learn an important lesson about understanding and embracing the needs of others, even when they differ from our own. Just as God showed compassion to the people of Nineveh, we are reminded to extend kindness and understanding to everyone in our school community. As parents and pupils, let's consider how we can show empathy and support to those around us. As a school, our IQM 'Centre of Excellence' status celebrates how much we do in area, but there is always room for improvement!

Also in collective worship, Mrs Damonse led a very moving session on Black History.  During this time, she encouraged the children to research a famous black person, either from history or modern day, and to create a poster about their life and achievements. We look forward to seeing these.

Thank you once again to everyone who played a part in these successes. It’s truly a privilege to see how our school community continues to grow and flourish!

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mr. David Huntingford

Headteacher

Amulet by Kazu Kibuishi

I would like to recommend this book because it encourages you to read comic books, which are like normal books but are filled with pictures. It has lots of dialogue. I'd say there are no parts of the comic book that are boring. I would love it if people read this book because it can be educational at times.

Year Three

We have continued to learn many new concepts this week. We have also consolidated some previous learning to help retain knowledge.

What we have learnt about this week

In English, we have consolidated our learning of inverted commas. We have also used our story plans to write our own adventure stories. These will form part of our assessment results.

In maths, we have continued with formal addition with regrouping, crossing tens and hundreds.

In science, we have learnt what different groups of animals eat and have learnt new terminology, omnivore, herbivore and carnivore.

In geography, we have researched the explorer Woni Spotts and presented our work in our own individual way.

What we will learn about next week

Next week in English, we will be finishing our class reader, Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx and writing a book review for this. We will also be learning about synonyms and focussing especially on synonyms for 'said'. We will also practise bringing more cohesion to our writing.

In maths, we will continue to add and subtract using the formal method. Please also continue to encourage your child to practise their multiplication facts using TTRockstars at home.

In history, we will discuss the importance of the River Nile to the Ancient Egyptians.

Unfortunately, next week will be our last ballet lesson with the Royal Ballet. The children have learnt so much about body control, team work and core ballet skills.

Year Four

We have had another great week in year four.

What we have learnt about this week

This week, the children engaged in an exciting writing activity, crafting their own adventure stories inspired by "Nell and the Cave Bear." They skilfully incorporated descriptive language to enhance their narratives and concluded the week by composing a captivating blurb for their books.

In mathematics, we continued our work on column subtraction while also introducing estimation techniques to verify our answers. Our Religious Education lessons commenced a new topic on Hinduism, where students explored various artefacts and images to deepen their understanding.

In history, we examined the lifestyle of hunter-gatherers and discussed the important role of archaeologists in uncovering the past. It has been a productive week filled with learning!

What we will learn about next week

Next week in English, we will focus on verb forms and time conjunctions to enhance our students' writing skills.

In Maths, we will continue our work on addition and subtraction, ensuring a solid understanding of these fundamental concepts.

In Geography, our lessons will explore the rich culture and diverse climate of India, helping students gain a broader perspective of the world.

In Science, we will be completing data collection tasks, promoting analytical thinking and practical skills.

Finally, in Religious Education, we will examine the origins of Hinduism, fostering an appreciation for different belief systems.

Year Five

We have had another action-packed week in year 4, with lots of work on our Enterprise project, linking our topics from multiple subjects relating to space.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in maths we have been finishing off our unit on addition and subtraction looking at multi step word problems, as well as comparing and finding missing numbers.

In English we have been looking at persuasive writing, looking at the features and doing some key research relating to 'segregation'. Following this, all classes have planned a persuasive speech about ending segregation, which they will be writing and performing.

In Science, pupils have brought together all their knowledge and learning to begin to create a documentary episode on the topics of the Solar System, Day and Night and the Lunar month. Pupils have been planning, writing a script and creating raps and pictures and models to assist them in their documentary episodes for 'Stargazing live.'

In computing, pupils have been looking at Online health and how working and playing online can affect our mental and physical health, in both a positive and negative way.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, in maths we will be beginning our new unit on multiplication and division, starting with multiples and factors.

In English we will be writing and performing a persuasive speech, linked to our topic focusing on our book: Hidden figures.

In our foundation topics, we will be finishing up our art unit of space, as well as completing, filming and presenting our documentary episodes for 'Stargazing live', in Science.

Year Six

It has been another great week for the children who have continued to work hard in their subjects.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in English, the children have examined the features of balanced arguments and used this knowledge to begin to compose their own balanced argument about the advantages and disadvantages of Victorian workhouses.  In maths, the children have begun a new unit of work focussing on fractions; this week’s lessons have explored equivalent fractions before moving onto comparing and ordering fractions. In history, the children have explored a range of historical sources about Victorian workhouses and discussed the reliability of each source.  This week’s geography lesson involved the children examining photographic evidence of climbers on Mount Everest to draw conclusions.  The children are continuing to make good progress making their waistcoats in technology.

What we will learn about next week

Next week in English, the children will continue to write and then edit their balanced arguments about Victorian workhouses.  In maths, the children will begin adding and subtracting simple fractions before moving on to adding and subtracting mixed numbers.  In art, the children will continue working on their William Morris inspired print designs whilst in DT the children will continue making their waistcoats in anticipation for our Victorian Day.  The children will also conclude their unit of work focussing on online safety in their IT lessons.
