24/25 - Autumn 2, Week 1

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

Welcome back! We hope everyone enjoyed a restful and refreshing half-term break. It’s been wonderful to see the children return with such enthusiasm and energy, ready to dive back into learning and activities this term.

Year 6 Visit to the Ben Kinsella Workshop
Our Year 6 pupils recently attended the Ben Kinsella Workshop, where they learned about the dangers of knife crime and the serious consequences of carrying a knife. This workshop provided them with powerful insights and messages, helping them understand the importance of making safe and responsible choices. We encourage families to continue this conversation at home, reinforcing the importance of staying safe and making good decisions.

Year 6 Trewern Residential Trip
Next week, our Year 6 pupils will embark on their much-anticipated residential trip to Trewern in the Black Mountains. This experience will offer them opportunities to grow in independence, develop resilience, and create lasting memories with their peers. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Mr Buckingham will unfortunately not be able to attend this year’s trip. However, Mr Wakeford will be joining the group on Monday and Tuesday, and I will be there from Wednesday to Friday to ensure the trip runs smoothly.

A quick reminder for parents of pupils attending Trewern: please ensure your child is in school at 7:30am on the day of departure so we can set off on time.

Collective Worship – The Fruits of the Spirit: Love
In Collective Worship, we’ve begun a series on the Fruits of the Spirit, starting with the theme of love. We’ve been exploring what it means to show love to others in our words and actions, drawing inspiration from the teachings of Jesus. Love is a value we can all bring into our lives—pupils and parents alike. Whether it’s showing kindness to someone at school, helping a family member, or being patient and understanding with friends, love makes a positive difference in all our lives.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mr. David Huntingford

The Dark Side of the Moon by Jane West & Roger Hurn

I like this book because it is adventurous, very crazy and it was a bit funny. The characters are Jack and Wanda. Jack is mysterious because he likes going for adventures. Wanda was a bit funny and sarcastic. She was a bit mean when Jack asked questions.

Year Three

It has been lovely to welcome the children back to school following what we hope was an enjoyable and peaceful half term break. The children have returned to school settled and ready to work.

What we have learnt about this week

In English we have started our new shared reading book ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ by Jules Verne. The children are really enjoying it so far and coping well with some tricky new vocabulary.

In grammar we have revised our understanding of common nouns and worked hard to develop a better understanding of recognising and using proper nouns. We have also looked at the features of non-chronological writing.

In maths we are continuing with addition and subtraction of 2 and 3 digit. We have also learnt various strategies for calculating 100.

In R.E. we have learnt why The Grace is a special type of prayer and the children have thoughtfully written their own class Grace.

We have begun our new unit in science, ‘LIght’.

What we will learn about next week

Next week we will continue to read ‘Around the World in 80 Days’. In grammar we will learn about subordinating conjunctions. We will also practise retrieving information from a non-chronological report.

In maths, we will continue developing various strategies for addition and subtraction calculations and will introduce estimating and using inverse calculations.

In R.E. we will be looking more deeply at the Holy Trinity and considering the religious language around this.

In history, we will be learning more about Egyptian pharaohs.

Year Four

It has been another busy week in year 4.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in year 4, we embarked on an exciting journey through literature as we began reading a new book, Journey to Jo' burg. In Maths, our focus was on understanding the concept of area, which proved to be both engaging and educational. In Religious Education, we explored the fascinating world of Hinduism, specifically investigating various gods and goddesses to enrich our cultural understanding.

In History, the children delved into the intriguing topic of Stone Age cave art, uncovering the stories behind ancient creations. Meanwhile, in Science, we engaged in data collection and used this information to create a bar chart, helping us to visualise and analyse our findings effectively.

What we will learn about next week

Next week in Year 4 promises to be both exciting and educational. In English, we will be writing a diary entry inspired by our class text, encouraging the children to delve into creative expression. In Maths, we will begin our exploration of multiplication, reinforcing their understanding of this essential mathematical operation. Our Geography lessons will compare and contrast India and the UK, fostering an appreciation for cultural diversity. In Religious Education, we will look into the practice of worship in Hinduism, promoting respect for different beliefs. Lastly, we will kick off a new Science topic on states of matter, sparking curiosity about the world around us. Thank you for your continued support.

Year Five

Everyone in Year 5 has made a great start to the new half term.

What we have learnt about this week

This week we have started our new class reading book ‘The boy at the Back of the Class’. As part of our English this week we have been discussing the book and researching about Syria and refugees. We have also looked at the features of informative texts.

In maths we have continued to look at multiplication and division by 10, 100 and 100, as well as using these skills to find multiples of these numbers.

Our new science topic, forces, involved us exploring the skills required to be a paratrooper and we will be looking at the scientific knowledge required to pursue this career.

Our DT topic looks at the fishing industry and each class will be visiting Billingsgate Fish Market for the day to learn more about fish production and the preparation of fish products. In preparation for this, we have explored different types of fish and fish products.

Our Geography this week take the form of UK Day, with the children completing a range of UK based activities.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, 5H and 5W will be putting their DT preparation into practice at Billingsgate Fish Market.

In History we will be looking at the Anglo-Saxon evidence found at Sutton Hoo.

For English we will start to prepare our notes and planning to write an information text and our new topic for maths will be looking at fractions.

Year Six

It has been fantastic to welcome the new Year 6 pupils back after the half-term break.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in maths, the children have been introduced to multiplying fractions by an integer and multiplying fractions by fractions.  In English and shared reading, the children have started their focus on the novel The Last Bear by Hannah Gold.  This included using clues on the front cover to make informed predictions about the text, as well as using ambitious vocabulary choices to complete a piece of descriptive writing about the Arctic. In art, the children had fun printing their William Morris inspired designs onto a net of a container.  In D.T. the children have completed making their waistcoats and evaluating their designs.  In R.E. the children have moved on to a new unit of work in which they will explore how people of different faiths express their faith creatively.  An important part of this week involved each of the three classes visiting the Ben Kinsella workshop in Barking where they learnt about the dangers of knife crime.  This is obviously an important local issue, and we urge you to continue the discussion at home with your children.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, some of the Year 6 children will be staying at the Trewern Educational Outdoor Centre to experience some experiential learning through a variety of educational experiences.  Those children who are staying at school will come off curriculum for the week and participate in a range of engaging activities.  Please can parents ensure that those children staying at school have their PE kit in school all week.
