24/25 - Autumn 2, Week 2

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

We have had a memorable week at William Ford, filled with special moments and meaningful learning experiences that our pupils will cherish.

Remembrance Day Assembly

On Monday, we gathered for a poignant Remembrance Day assembly, observing a moment of silence at 11am. Our Worship Council were able to represent our school at the Cenotaph in Dagenham, in solidarity with the community. This opportunity allowed our students to reflect on the importance of remembrance, honouring those who have served and sacrificed.

Year Five Visit to Billingsgate Fish Market

Our Year Five pupils embarked on an exciting visit to Billingsgate Fish Market as part of their DT unit and our focus on career education. This visit offered invaluable insights into the catering industry and helped pupils understand the journey of fish from the market to our plates. The pupils were able to prepare and taste a variety of fish from haddock, coley and cod to prawns, mussels, crab and squid! We are proud to help our pupils explore potential career paths and learn about the fascinating work that goes on behind the scenes to bring food to our tables.

Year Six Residential to Wales

The Year Six residential to the Welsh mountains has been a tremendous success! Blessed with beautiful weather, our pupils enjoyed a range of adventurous activities, including caving, mountain climbing and gorge walking. These experiences have not only introduced them to the natural beauty of Wales but have also given them opportunities to develop independence, self-management, teamwork, and resilience as they pushed themselves beyond their comfort zones. Staff have been particularly impressed with the excellent behaviour and spirit of our pupils throughout the trip.

Collective Worship

In Collective Worship this week, we focused on the fruit of the Spirit—joy. This theme resonated wonderfully with the activities our pupils have experienced. Whether it was the joy of discovery at Billingsgate Fish Market or the exhilaration of overcoming challenges in Wales, joy has been woven through our week. We hope that these experiences have enriched our pupils’ understanding of joy and its presence in both simple and profound moments.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to another week of learning and growth at William Ford.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Year Three

It’s been another busy week as we settle into this half term

What we have learnt about this week

In English, this week we have looked at a non-chronological report about Greece. The children created their own comprehension questions based on this text. We discussed ‘question words’ such as what, where, when. why, who and how to help with this. The children then answered their own questions in full sentences. We have also researched another country and made notes for different subjects to include in our own non-chronological report.

In maths, we have begun our new topic ‘multiplication and division.’ The children have practised drawing dot arrays to reinforce their understanding and have learnt that even numbers are also multiples of two.

In history the children learnt more about a range of importance Ancient Egyptian pharaohs and their achievements.

The children have discussed the roles of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit in R.E. this week.

What we will learn about next week

In English we will be using our notes on a country to create our own non- chronological report including the features necessary for this style of writing.

We will continue with multiplication in maths and will be focussing on multiplying and sharing with a focus on the 3 and 4 times tables.

In geography we will be learning about the difference between human and physical geography and R.E we will be continuing our work focusing on the Holy Trinity.

Year Four

What we have learnt about this week

In English, the children have been writing diary entries from the perspective of Naledi in the story Journey to Jo'burg, which has sparked some thoughtful discussions about her experiences. The have then used this to write their own diary from her perspective. In Maths, the focus this week has been on the three, six, and nine times tables, and the students are making great progress in their understanding. They have used a range of strategies and have thought about how these can be used to help with division calculations too.

In Science, we introduced the new topic of 'States of Matter', where the children have been exploring the characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases. Geography this week involved comparing India to the UK, helping the children to understand diverse cultures and environments.

Finally, in Religious Education, we have been examining the Hindu practice of puja, which has enriched the students' appreciation of different faiths.

What we will learn about next week

Next week in Year 4, we will continue our focus on multiplication in Maths, reinforcing essential skills and strategies. In English, students will engage in research about key historical events, developing their critical thinking and writing abilities. Our Science lessons will further explore the properties of solids, liquids, and gases, allowing children to experiment and learn through hands-on activities. In Religious Education, we will study the festival of Puja in Hinduism, deepening our understanding of diverse cultures and traditions. Thank you for your continued support in fostering a rich learning environment for our children.

Year Five

As always, Year 5 have had a fun-filled, eventful week!

What we have learnt about this week

This week in Year 5, two classes have been to Billingsgate fish market, as part of their DT unit, where they had great fun, trying new foods!

In English, we have been researching Syria and planning and writing a non-chronological report on Syria, linked with our book: The boy at the back of the class.

In maths, we have begun our unit on fractions and the pupils have been looking at unit fractions and how to find equivalent fractions. Lots of fun!

In computing we have been studying search engines and have learnt that not all things that are on the internet are true and accurate.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, we will be continuing our unit in maths on fractions, learning how to add fractions.

In English, we will be looking at the key characters in our book, learning about their character traits, as well as their feelings.

In History, we will be continuing our theme on Anglo-Saxons, looking at justice, as well as the types of gods that the Anglo-Saxons believed in.

In Science, pupils will be carrying out an investigation, including parachutes and air-resistance, all linking to our topic on Forces - Paratroopers.

We hope you have a safe, fun and restful weekend!

Year Six

Looking at the school website, it’s clear from the photos that have been uploaded the children at Trewern have had a fantastic time.  Back at school, we have come off curriculum for the week to enjoy a range of creative activities.

What we have learnt about this week

This week, the children have completed a range of activities in P.E. lessons with the school’s P.E. specialists.  Back in the classroom, the children have completed some artwork based on the south American artist Joaquin Torres Garcia.  They examined the importance of symbols in his work and then designed and painted a picture that incorporated symbols of things that were important to them.  The children have also had the opportunity to further refine their sewing skills by designing and making a bookmark using Binca and embroidery thread.  Many of the children started off very hesitant about being able to do the different stitches but they soon got into the task and produced some brilliant, embroidered bookmarks which they have taken home.  The children have also made some games based on games played by Victorian children.  These games will be used on Friday 22 November which is the Year 6 Victorian Day.  Finally, the children completed some work on the school’s computers in the IT suite which will be sent to our Stand By Me sponsor child, Jorge.

What we will learn about next week

Next week in maths, the children will complete their unit of work on fractions and move on to units of measure.  In English, the children will plan, write and edit a piece of descriptive writing based on the Arctic.  In science, the children will explore how light travels in straight lines.  The children will also begin new units of work in music and French.
