24/25 - Autumn 2, Week 3

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

What a chilly week it’s been, with the first dusting of snow reminding us that winter is truly upon us! Despite the frosty weather, the warmth and energy inside our school have kept spirits high as we dive deeper into our learning and spiritual reflections.

In Collective Worship this week, we continued the story of Joseph, exploring his time in Potiphar’s house and the challenges he faced due to Potiphar’s wife. This story sparked rich discussions about the importance of honesty, integrity, and making the right choices, even when it’s difficult. We encouraged our pupils to think about how they can demonstrate these values in their everyday lives, whether it’s owning up to mistakes, being kind to friends, or making fair decisions.

Yesterday, we also celebrated our Spirituality Day, themed around "Gratitude and Spirituality." The day began with a moving Collective Worship assembly focusing on thankfulness and connecting with the world and people around us. Throughout the morning, pupils engaged in thought-provoking discussions and activities, reflecting on what they’re grateful for in their lives. The highlight of the day was a gratitude carousel, where children expressed thanks for everything from sports and science to the beauty of creation and the inspiration of Jesus’ life.

It is with great sadness that we announce Mrs Damonse will be leaving William Ford at the end of next week. She has been an invaluable member of our team for over nine years, making a significant difference in the lives of many children. Due to the changing circumstances of the school, this departure was not of her choosing. However, we are deeply grateful for her dedication and contributions to our school community. We wish her every success and happiness in the future. Class 4D will be taught by Mrs Legg, our Assistant Headteacher and Years 3/4 phase leader, for the remainder of the academic year.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to sharing more moments of learning, reflection, and joy with you as the term progresses.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Stay warm!

Mr. David Huntingford

Headteacher

Friend or Foe by Michael Morpurgo

This book is about a boy who escaped London because of all the bombing. He escaped on a plane with two teachers and his friends. I liked that it was adventurous book and exciting. It has complicated words that I look up in a dictionary and use in my writing in English. I recommend this book to people who like adventure books.

Year Three

We can’t believe we are three weeks into this half term already and the Christmas festivities will soon be upon us. This week we have had the opportunity to reflect on what spirituality means and what we are thankful for through our Spirituality Day activities.

What we have learnt about this week

In English, the children have been working hard to produce their own non-chronological report on a country following their note-taking last week. The children had to include the features of this type of writing such as subheadings, fact boxes and technical language.

In grammar the children have continued to practise using past and present tense.

In maths we have introduced sharing and dividing and have also focused on the three times table. The children are getting so much better at using dot arrays to help them solve problems. Please continue to encourage your child to use TT Rockstars to improve the speed and accuracy of their multiplication facts as this will obviously support their understanding of division too.

In R.E. we have looked at Kennings to describe the Holy Trinity and written Kennings of our own.

In art we are continuing to look at Egyptian art in preparation for making our own Egyptian scroll.

What we will learn about next week

In next week’s English lessons, we will be looking at types of letter writing with a focus on informal letters. We will also be practising dictionary skills.

In maths we will be continuing to practise multiplying and dividing with a focus on the 4 and 8 times tables.

In R.E. we will be assessing our learning on our current unit of work ‘Incarnation’In science we will be identifying transparent, translucent and opaque materials.

We wish you a happy and restful weekend and look forward to having the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with you at next week’s parent’s evenings.

Year Four

It been a great week in year 4 and the children have worked hard.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in Year 4, the children have been engaged in a variety of exciting learning activities. In English, they explored non-chronological reports, enhancing their understanding of informative writing and the importance of structure. In mathematics, they continued to focus on multiplication, developing their skills and confidence in this fundamental area of numeracy.

During our history lessons, the children had the opportunity to examine artefacts from the Stone Age, fostering their curiosity about early human life and the significance of these historical remnants. Furthermore, the students dedicated a day to exploring what it means to be spiritual, encouraging thoughtful discussions and reflections on personal beliefs and values.

What we will learn about next week

Next week in Year 4 promises to be an exciting and enriching experience for our children. In English, the students will be working on writing their own non-chronological reports, allowing them to explore a topic of interest while developing their writing skills. In maths, we will continue our focus on multiplication, reinforcing the importance of these foundational concepts.

In geography, we will delve into the climate of India, broadening our understanding of this vibrant country. Our science lessons will involve investigating various liquids, fostering curiosity and critical thinking. Finally, at the end of the week, we are thrilled to celebrate India Day, where students will experience and appreciate the rich culture of India and its significant influence on the world.

Year Five

As we come to the end of our third week of this half-term, we have been reflecting upon our thoughts about Spirituality during Spirituality Day.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in maths, we have been converting improper fraction into mixed numbers and vice versa. We have solved problems with fractions involving numbers, pictures and words. As well as comparing fractions.

Using a checklist, we edited our writing, looking for improvements and corrections to enhance our work. We have also explored a wider range of synonyms and found a rule to help us sort spelling words into –ce or –se.

We became archaeologists in history, discovering artefacts and trying to work out who the mystery person buried at Sutton Hoo might have been.

Year Six

Despite the first snowflakes of the year, the Year Six children have remained focussed on their work in the classroom and have continued to work hard.

What we have learnt about this week

This week, the children completed their maths unit of work on fractions by finding fractions of amounts including finding the whole.  In English, the children wrote a descriptive setting of the Arctic Circle and then practised editing work for corrections and improvements.  In R.E. the children have explored the significance of different colours within the Christian calendar whilst in history the children examined the reliability of Charles Dicken’s novel Oliver Twist as a source of information about the conditions of Victorian workhouses.  The week ended with our amazing Victorian Day.  The children looked fantastic dressed up in their Victorian costumes, including many children who chose to wear their home-made waistcoats from our technology lessons. The children completed a range of activities including a drama based on Oliver Twist, making peppermint creams, making a peg doll and playing a range of Victorian children’s games.  The children had a brilliant time and learned lots from the practical activities they participated in.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, the children will be completing their second set of SATs assessment tests in maths, reading, spelling and grammar.  In geography, they will examine the ways in which humans use mountains whilst in French they will learn French vocabulary associated with different sports.  In music, the children will continue to explore the Kodaly method in their music lessons.  The Year 6 team wish you all a restful weekend and look forward to speaking to you during next week’s parents’ evenings.
