24/25 - Autumn 2, Week 5

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

As we approach Christmas, it's important to remind ourselves of its true Christian meaning—the celebration of Jesus Christ’s birth, bringing hope, love, and salvation to the world. This joyous time calls us to reflect on the blessings we have and to share peace and kindness with others.

It’s been wonderful to see so many pupils and staff embracing the festive spirit with their colourful Christmas jumpers for Christmas Jumper Day! A special thank you to our amazing catering team for providing another delightful Christmas dinner, which was enjoyed by all.

We’re also excited to see rehearsals beginning for our iSingPop Christmas pop concert. This promises to be a vibrant celebration of the season and a reminder of the joy and love that Christ brings. Details of the concert can be found below, and we hope to see many of you there.

In Collective Worship this week, we continued with the story of Joseph, reflecting on the powerful moment when his brothers sought his help after he had risen to prominence in Pharaoh’s court. This story reminds us of God’s call to forgive, reconcile, and act with compassion—values central to the Christian message of Christmas.

Thank you for your continued support as we prepare to celebrate this special time of year together.

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mr. David Huntingford

As the holidays approach, some children may find it overwhelming. Here are some activities you can do with your children to help regulate their emotions.

Pupils from iRock will be having a concert on Friday 13th at 10am. If you invest in lessons for your child,  DO NOT miss this amazing opportunity to see them perform with their band.

Don't forget our Christmas Fete - this year we will be joining with Village Infants. On Wednesday 18th December. Letters with more information will be sent soon.

RoboDog by David Williams

Recently, I read a book called RoboDog and I really enjoyed it, as it was mysterious, funny and interesting. It was from one of my favourite authors David Walliams and it was illustrated by Adam Stower.

Here is a summary:

Welcome to the city of Bedlam! Enter if you dare!

  • Bedlam is one of the most dangerous places on earth – home to a host of wicked villains. The city needs a superhero to defeat these evil criminals. But who? RoboDog!

  • He is the newest recruit at the Police dog school and super charged for adventure. But can he stop the most feared duo in Bedlam, and their evil plans to ruin the city?

That was a brief summary of RoboDog. Overall, I definitely recommend this book!

Year Three

It has already been a week of fun and festivities in Year 3. The children seemed to enjoy the excitement of their first William Ford Christmas dinner. We have also been busy learning some fantastic new songs to entertain you with at our iSingPop concert next week.

What we have learnt about this week

In English we have continued practising alphabetical order to assist with dictionary skills. We have also looked more closely at the features of informal letter writing and planned an informal letter of our own. We have used our plan to write a letter as our assessment piece of writing for this half term.

In maths, we decided to take a break from multiplication and division lessons and spend some time looking at 2D shapes.

The children carried out a science investigation to find out more about how shadows are made.

In geography we played lots of fun games to improve our understanding of using grid references to locate features on a map.

What we will learn about next week

In English we will continue with more dictionary skills and will be learning about how the pages are laid out to help us locate words more easily. We will then use these features to find the definitions of words. We will also have a lesson on practising editing skills and editing our own work.

In history, we will find out more about the reasons for mummification in Egyptian times and how the process was carried out.

We wish you all a happy and peaceful weekend.

Year Four

We have had another busy week in Year 4. The children enjoyed their Christmas dinner on Wednesday. It was great to see so many different Christmas jumpers.

What we have learnt about this week

In English, the children have been looking at a range of persuasive letters. They have explored the key features and language techniques that make such writing effective.

In maths, our focus has continued to be on perimeter. The students have been investigating how to calculate the missing sides of rectilinear shapes. This hands-on approach has allowed them to apply their understanding in practical ways, enhancing their problem-solving skills.

In history, we turned our attention to the fascinating archaeological discovery of Skara Brae in the Orkneys. This incredible site has provided us with valuable insights into life during the Neolithic period, and the children have thoroughly enjoyed uncovering the stories of our ancient ancestors. The children have also been lucky enough to participate in a live stream hosted by the London Museum where they have investigated life in the late Neolithic moving into the Bronze Age. It was a great experience for the children.

Lastly, in Religious Education, we have learned about worship in the mandir within Hinduism. The children have gained a deeper understanding of this important aspect of the faith and its significance to the community.

What we will learn about next week

In English, we will start an exciting project where children will be writing persuasive letters addressed to the president of South Africa in the late 1980s, shortly after the publication of "Journey to Jo'burg." This activity will not only enhance their writing skills but also allow them to express their thoughts on apartheid and suggest actions to alleviate the situation. It promises to be a thought-provoking experience, blending history with creativity.

In Maths, we will revisit the essential topic of multiplication, specifically focusing on strategies to multiply by 10 and 100. This foundational knowledge is vital for the children as they advance in their mathematical understanding.

In Science, we will be exploring the fascinating concept of states of matter and how materials change from one state to another. To make this lesson even more enjoyable, we may involve some chocolate, ensuring a sweet learning experience.

Year Five

Another week has flown by, filled with exciting learning opportunities!

What we have learnt about this week

In English, the children have had a great time, tasting pomegranates! This experience was used to compile a word bank of ambitious vocabulary to use in our persuasive writing.

This week in maths, fractions continue to be our focus. The children have been adding and subtracting mixed numbers and improper fractions.

It has been investigation time in science this week. The children had to devise and carry out their own investigation about how the surface area of a parachute affects the amount of air resistance acting on it. We had great fun testing out parachutes.

What we will learn about next week

In English next week, children will be taking part in some drama that will help them to plan a written argument.

Next week will be the end of our fractions unit, where we will be using all the skills we have learned to solve problems involving fractions.

We hope you have a fantastic weekend and we look forward to seeing you at our iSing Pop concert on the 12th!

Year Six

The children are continuing to work hard despite the excitement of Christmas jumper day and the delicious Christmas dinner provided by our school kitchen staff.

What we have learnt about this week

In maths this week, the children have converted between different units of measure and calculated metric measures within worded problems.  In English, the children really engaged in our work based on the effects of climate change on the world.  They have examined the features of powerful speeches and then planned and written their own speeches about the effect of climate change on polar bears.  In science, the children explored the relationship between distance from a light source and the size of shadows.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, the children will edit their speeches in English.  In maths, we will move on to our next unit of work which is algebra.  The children are approaching the end of their geography unit of work and will explore the positive and negative effects of tourism in mountainous areas.  The children are also looking forward to performing our Christmas concert to you next Thursday.
