Summer 2 - Week 5

{alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

Key dates

As the end of term creeps ever closer, I have been reflecting on the sheer number of different activities, events and experiences we undertake here at William Ford.  Whilst this is absolutely fantastic, and certainly enriches the children's educational experience, one criticism we often hear is that we do not always provide enough notice of events for families to book time off work or to arrange costumes etc.  That is a very fair point.

Over the past few weeks, I have been collating all the different events and theme days that we run and thinking about when these should happen during the next academic year.  Very soon we will be sending out a list of dates that will cover the entire academic year, from September right through to July.  This will include over 80% of the key events that we run but, do be aware we are always on the lookout for new ideas and activities and indeed, as the year progresses, opportunities will arise that we will want to utilise for the betterment of our pupils.

It is my strong desire that the dates we send will not change hence parents will be able to arrange any necessary childcare, time off work costumes etc along with budgeting for any costs e.g. our very popular France trip.

When new opportunities do present themselves, we will aim to provide ample time in order that parents can make the necessary arrangements.

Lego workshop and Billingsgate Fish Market

Speaking of new opportunities, it is wonderful to hear of Year Five's experience this week of learning to prepare fish at Billingsgate Fish Market and using Lego to further enrich the curriculum at the London Design and Engineering UTC in Beckton.  You can read more about both of these experiences below.

Our Year Three English Group project

I was very excited yesterday to receive an invitation from a group of Year Three children who have been working particularly hard ot their writing and history.  These children delivered a wonderful presentation and revealed an excellent model of Zeus' temple.  They were in the role of tour guides, showcasing each element.  Some of these pupils are new to the English language and others have really had to work hard in order to deliver this excellent presentation to several members of the school community including teachers, office, site and catering staff.

A big well done to Mrs Miller too for the support she has provided.

Year Six Leavers' Festival

A fantastic event!  Do look below for more information!

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Proverbs 26:20-22

20 Without wood, a fire goes out; without gossip, quarrelling stops. 21 Charcoal keeps the embers glowing, wood keeps the fire burning, and troublemakers keep arguments alive. 22Gossip is so tasty! How we love to swallow it!

Next week children will start their transitions and get ready for next year. Children will find out their new teachers and see their new classrooms.

This can be an exciting, but scary time for children, so please talk to them about how they are feeling.

Also, Mrs Finch's Resilience Group is cancelled on Monday 10th July due to a trip.

We have noticed a lot of telephone numbers are out of date on our system. Therefore, we will be sending a link out to parents to update their information to ensure we have the most recent details on our system.

This week I recommend ‘Mummy Fairy and Me’ by Sophie Kinsella. It is about a girl whose mum and grandma are both secret fairies. Sometimes their spells go slightly wrong and Ella has to help them. I love this book and have read this multiple times! I never get bored with this book.

Year Three

Year three have been working really hard on their writing assessments, where the children have been writing an explanation text on how to take care of a dragon. The children have demonstrated that they are getting much better at writing at length and editing their work. It is great to see how much they've improved since their first assessment.

In maths the children have started some work on money. They took part in an investigation demonstrating their logical approaches to the task. In science the children have planted marigold seeds and are keen to see them beginning to germinate. In RE the children have been learning different facts about the Bible and demonstrated what they already know about this book.

We are excited to be going to Kew Gardens on Monday. Please be reminded that the children need a packed lunch, sensible footwear, sunscreen applied before they arrive and a hat would be a good idea. Please keep an eye on the weather for any changes in case the children need a waterproof. Lunch should be brought in a labelled carrier bag so that it can be disposed of afterwards. Anything the children bring, they will have to carry and are responsible for.

Year Four

This week, Year 4 have been engaging in another fun-filled, action packed week. In DT, pupils have been enjoying starting their new topic, making a  slingshot car! They are building their knowledge and applying their scientific skills, as well as art and design skills to create a slingshot car, out of materials and cams. In Maths, pupils have been learning how to tell the time, converting analogue and digital timings, as well as looking at the 12 hour and 24 hour clock. In Literacy, pupils have been building up their knowledge of the Amazon rainforest, in order to write a beginner's guide to Amazon, next week. In Science, Year 4 have been studying living things and habitats, looking at life processes and the habitats of specific animals. We had a great time in Geography this, week working in teams to research and create a group poster about deforestation. As part of their Geography project, pupils have been working on responding to a letter from the WWF, and working with them to prevent deforestation. We hope you have a great weekend and we look forward to another exciting week, next week!

Year Five

Another busy week for everyone in Year 5! We are now really into our book 'The Nowhere Emporium' and the children have been making  extremely thoughtful predictions based on what they think is behind the red curtain......

This has involved writing using all the writing, grammar and punctuation skills we have developed this year, and the children are amazed at how much they have learnt!

We have concluded our maths topic about decimals by multiplying and dividing decimals by 10,100 and 100 and using this knowledge to solve problems, including the use of inverse calculations.

Our topic about the history of Baghdad is coming to a close and this week we have been thinking about the Silk Road and its significance to the history of the world. Our music continues with the study of musical theatre where we have been discussing careers in the theatre and listening to different types of songs from the stage and film. We are now going to have a go at writing our own songs for a musical.

The children in Year 5 are getting very excited about all the things we have planned for next week!

Year Six

Year 6 has an exciting start to the week with a trip to Hollywood Bowl. The children enjoyed a game of bowling and delicious lunch. It was great to see the children supporting and encouraging each other during the game. Children have also been continuing their hard work during rehearsals of ‘I’m an 11-year-old…Get me out of here!’, they are becoming more confident with their lines and signing and are looking forward to performing next week. On Tuesday, the children received a talk from the Transport for London, learning about personal safety, respect, responsibility and awareness both on and around public transport. Children listened well during the workshop and contributed with sensible questions relating to travelling around London safely. Also, this week, children begin their new DT unit, they researched and designed a 3-course meal focusing on the key ‘hero’ ingredient of peppers, chicken, Quorn and pineapple. We look forward to the children creating these meals in the coming weeks. In history children researched significant buildings in Barking and Dagenham and explored the impact they had on the area. Next lesson, children will look at the life of William Ford and how he contributed to the local community.
