23/24 - Autumn 2 - Week 1

{item_alt_tag}

Dear parents and carers,

Trewern Year Six residential

Welcome back to all Year Six pupils who attended our residential.  For the past five days, these pupils have staying in the middle of the countryside on the English/Welsh border - surrounded by the Black Mountains and the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons).  During this excursion they have embarked upon mountain hiking, caving and gorge walking along with enjoying God's wonderful creation (and quite a variety of different weather too)!  Whilst these will undoubtedly create life-long memories, more importantly are the skills of independence, organisation and 'surviving' away from home.  From making their own beds to serving food; organising their own clothes to managing home sickness, these are all important aspects of growing up and facets of a well-rounded education.

It was a privilege to be able to travel down to Trewern on Wednesday to witness first hand these wonderful experiences, but I was incredibly tired by the end of it!  I cannot imagine how tired the staff who spent all week there must be feeling.  A huge thank you to Miss Ibukun, Mrs Freeland, Mrs Baxter, Mrs Rivers and Mr Buckingham, without whose commitment, such memorable and valuable experiences would not be possible.

Year Five pupils and parents, we have already made a provisional booking for next year and will release those details soon.

Year Six @ William Ford

The pupils who remained at William Ford spent the week working in small groups to complete a project about the palaeontologist Mary Anning.  This included internet research as well as completing watercolour pictures and making models of fossils.  Once this work was completed, the children had the opportunity to produce some work as part of our celebration of diversity month.  They also had a football tournament in their P.E. lessons.

UK Day - Year Five

Year Five was awash of red, white and blue as, linked to their current geography unit, the pupils enjoyed UK day.  Throughout the day, many activities were undertaken to celebrate our country and the pupils did a fantastic job dressing up in the colours of the Union Jack flag.

Inspiring Futures Young Creative Makerspace 2023

15 lucky Year Four pupils attended this event where they considered what makes a good cultural leader as well as learning about the importance of cultural education (music, art, dance etc).  As well as enjoying some delicious food, pupils worked with other schools and with Ideate Education artists to produce an immersive Makerspace event that delves into the intricacies of leadership development. Inspired by the analogy of an orchestra! This event is being followed up with an educational professionals event within two weeks where the outcome of this event will be shared.   Do view the pupils' musical performance here: Year Four Cultural leadership conference. - YouTube

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Anti-Bullying Week 2023 takes place from 13th – 17th November with the theme ‘Make A Noise About Bullying’.

It is coordinated by the Anti-Bullying Alliance, which is based at leading children’s charity the National Children’s Bureau. This year we have worked with children and young people up and down England, Wales and Northern Ireland to decide the theme. This Anti-Bullying Week we urge adults and children alike to come together to have discussions about what we mean by bullying behaviour, how we can tell the difference between ‘banter’ and bullying and how we can make changes to reduce bullying. Together, we can make a difference if we make a noise to stop bullying.

We are so proud of Cairon, one of our year 4 pupils. A few weeks ago, he had the idea of a bake sale to raise money.

We discussed who and why he wanted to do this and his answer was overwhelming. He wanted to do this for pupils who do not have the opportunity to participate in our after-school clubs. Those who do not have the spare money to join these clubs and spend time with their peers learning a new sport or skill.

Today Cairon (and his mum) raised £67.00 in just under one hour - This would finance 5 pupils for a half-term of one club.

We still have many donations from our lovely community, so we will now run the bake sales at break time on Monday and Tuesday.  If you would like to donate any further cakes, please bring them to the school office.

Year Three

Welcome back to Year 3! In maths, children have been introduced to the column method for completing addition and subtraction. They have thought about how important it is to set out their calculations accurately, paying attention to the place value.

We have also started to read a new book in English lessons; we are focussing on James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl. The children have been describing James' house from word banks that they have produced themselves.

In geography, children have been comparing the seven continents by various attributes, including population and landmass.

We have also been introduced to a new topic in RE. The children have begun to think about the Christian concept of the trinity and have drawn symbols to represent the three parts.

Science has seen year three continue to think about the human body, thinking about the skeleton and how muscles help it to move.

The children have continued to practise their spoken French, with them practising a French finger rhyme to present to the class.

Year Four

After a restful half-term break, Year 4 have come back and hit the ground running by diving into their learning and working diligently across the curriculum.

In maths, we started a new topic: Area. This week we have learnt how to count squares to calculate the area of a shape and also to make shapes using a given number of squares.

In English, we have started with our new class text: Journey to Jo'burg. The children have learnt about the background of the main characters and also started to explore the characters' feelings and emotions. We are looking forward to joining the characters in their fascinating experiences on this journey.

In history, we have been learning about the Bronze Age and how it was better than the Stone Age. Children were amazed at the inventions and how they changed the lives of people thousands of years ago and these changes still have an impact on our lives today.

In RE, we learnt about the importance of Hindu religious festivals and their importance.

In science, we started our new topic: States of Matter. We learnt about the difference between solids and liquids. We are looking forward to learning more about this topic.

We wish you a restful weekend and stay safe.

Year Five

We have had a busy and exciting start to this half-term in Year 5.  In English, we have started to read our new class book 'The Boy at the Back of the Class' by Onjali Q. Rauf. It has begun with a bit of a mystery - who is this new boy? This term we will be using this book as a focus for both reading and writing and this week  has seen us learning about the features of non-chronological report writing as well as learning about subordinating conjunctions and clauses in grammar.

Our new Maths topic is fractions, and we have been finding out how important our times-tables are to assist this - so keep up the good work with Times Tables Rockstars everyone.

On Tuesday we all enjoyed having fun as well as researching and learning about features of the United Kingdom during UK Day for Geography and the children all looked splendid in their UK-themed outfits. The children also completed some lovely artwork based on the traditional flowers of the countries in the United Kingdom.

Year Six

This week, the children who did not attend the Trewern residential trip came off curriculum to spend time completing a project about Mary Anning who lived in the Victorian era.  She was a female palaeontologist who has been posthumously credited  with being one of the most successful and influential contributors to the study of fossils.  The children undertook internet research about her life and her famous fossil finds.  They also incorporated lots of art into their projects by completing some watercolour paintings as well as making paper-mache models of a range of fossils.  Later in the week, the children had the opportunity to complete a contribution to our celebration of diversity month.  The children were also lucky enough to have an extra PE lesson this week and even had a football tournament.
