23/24 - Spring 1 - Week 2

Dear parents and carers,

Police visit

Any visitor to the school on Wednesday must have wondered what on earth was going on.  A police van in the playground with shields and batons, horses at the front of the school and endless police personnel in the building.

This fantastic workshop, organised by Mrs Beech and provided by the Metropolitan Police, not only enlightened and motivated our Year Six children to consider a future career in the police force but also aimed at building relationships between the pupils and the police - ensuring that they are viewed as an organisation that can be trusted and that can help them if needed.

Furthermore, the pupils learnt a valuable lessons about how to help someone who is injured and about the dangers of carrying a knife.  They also met Julie, the grandmother of Lewis Taylor (19), who tragically lost his life after being stabbed outside a pub in Chelmsford.  The children heard the effect this had on the wider family along with the sentences handed down to the killers.  This was a very hard-hitting and emotional presentation for which we make no apology.  We want all of our pupils to be safe.  Sadly, when a child is found with a knife they normally state it is carried for protection.  We want all of our pupils to understand that the majority of those who are stabbed are injured by their own weapon, hence this is an incredibly dangerous, and illegal, thing to do. Lego HQ visit

We had our first visit for Year Four to Lego HQ where the pupils experienced using Lego to develop their understanding of habitats.  Not only did the pupils have a wonderful time developing their knowledge with Lego but our staff also received a great insight in how we can use Lego in school to develop understanding.  You can read more about this below.

iRockSchool

Today our first school rock bands were formed!  Unfortunately, I only got to visit one group but it was wonderful to see our children not only learning to play electric guitars, drums and keyboards but to also develop their understanding of musical processes and vocabulary.

In the above pictures, you also get a glimpse of our new special educational needs provision - more about that next week!

I pray you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mrs Finch will be starting her groups  for Hamish and Milo interventions next week, which is really exciting.

Children who have been selected for these groups have made a sock puppet this week to use in the sessions. Please ask your child about this and encourage them to talk about what they are doing in each session.

Wellbeing Resources & Emotions curriculum | Hamish & Milo

Can I please remind all parents that children should enter through the school gates unaccompanied in the morning. We do this to encourage independence and self confidence in the children. We kindly ask that pupils are left at the first gate (or at rear gate for entrance from the park) to make their own way to their class for the start of the day. If you are having difficulty encouraging your child to take those steps alone please speak to a staff member.

Year Three

We can hardly believe that it is only the second week back after the Christmas break as we have already covered such a lot. We hope the children have been telling you all about their lessons this week.

What we have learnt about this week

In maths, we have continued to focus on the basics of multiplication. We have learnt about odd and even numbers through a fun game. We have also focussed on the multiples of 2,5 and 10.

In our English lessons we have continued learning about non-chronological writing. We have created our own questions based on a text and also retrieved information from the text to answer questions. In addition, the children have chosen a country and begun to research it, in preparation for writing their own non-chronological report next week. In grammar, we have introduced writing in the present tense and also learnt about coordinating conjunctions as well as main and subordinating clauses.

In R.E. this week, the pupils learnt how Judaism was founded through the story of Abraham.

We began a new design and technology unit this week in which we will design and make an Egyptian collar. In this week's lesson we looked at some examples of these and discussed the colours, patterns and styles.

What we will learn about next week

In maths next week we will be looking at multiplying and dividing by 3 and 4.

In English, the children will continue to consolidate the use of the present tense and will write and edit their own non-chronological report.

In R.E. we will be learning more information about the Torah scroll.

In design and technology next week we will be beginning to use our previous learning to inform our own design for an Egyptian collar.

Year Four

Year 4 have had another week of exciting learning, continuing their theme of George's Marvellous medicine! 4IW also had the opportunity to go on a trip to the Lego headquarters! (The other year 4 classes will also get the opportunity next year).

What we have learnt about this week

This week, year 4 have had a great week. In English and reading, pupils have been continuing their theme of George's Marvellous medicine, by using rhyme to learn how to write a set of instructions. This is all geared towards them producing a set of instructions for their own medicine! In maths, pupils have continued their theme of measure and have been learning how to measure perimeter. In Science, pupils took part in a science experiment looking at the speed of sound. They made string telephones to test their theories. In RE, pupils created interview questions in order to interview a vicar/priest/pastor! In PSHE, pupils looked at dreams and goals and how sometimes we achieve our goals, but other times we may not. They looked at strategies to cope with disappointment.

What we will learn about next week

Next week, pupils will be continuing there topic in maths, of measure, to

Year Five

We have had a great week this week in Year 5. The children were lucky enough to take part in an art workshop - please see the recent news for more information on this.

What we have learnt about this week

This week in maths, we consolidated our division and multiplication learning by solving word problems relating to these.

In English, the children thought about the myths and truths of asylum seekers and what consequences these myths could have.

In Science, children began to describe and sort some everyday materials using scientific vocabulary such as rigid, fragile, opaque and transparent.

In RE, the children thought about the phrase 'What would Jesus Do?' and deliberated the question: Can enemies become friends?

What we will learn about next week

In English, we will be writing a balanced argument on why Sami shouldn't have taken money from Baba.

In maths, we will be looking at fractions of amounts and how fractions can be used as operators.

In DT, the children will think about their design of a pop up book and begin to look at the mechanisms involved in this.

Year Six

This week the children enjoyed their first swimming lesson at the Abbey Leisure Centre in Barking.  Please ensure your child brings their swimming costume/trunks, a towel and a swimming hat each week for their allocated swimming session.

What we have learnt about this week

This week, the children have had their half-term SATs assessments in maths, reading ,spelling, punctuation and grammar.  All the children worked hard each day, and we look forward to sharing their results with you at our next parents' evening.  The children also had an exciting Wednesday morning when the police visited the school and helped the children to explore how to be safe in our local community, they also learnt some first aid skills.  In addition, the children were able to meet and ask questions to two mounted police officers with their horses.  Finally, take were invited to take a look inside a police van and examine equipment such as riot shields.  It was clear all the children not only enjoyed the visit but gained valuable knowledge about our police service.

What we will learn about next week

Next week in maths, we will be moving on to learning about algebra.  In English, the children will be planning and writing a diary entry based on our focus text, 'When the Mountains Roared'.  Our next science lesson will involve the children turning their design plan of an electrical festive decoration into an accurate diagram of their circuit with an explanation of how each component works.
