Learning about careers in cyber security
We were delighted to welcome Simon Lacey into school today as part of our ongoing work to raise aspirations and broaden pupils’ understanding of future careers.
Simon works in cybersecurity, having set up his own company, and has previously worked at the Bank of England alongside former Governor and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. During a whole-school assembly, Simon spoke openly about his career journey and the path that led him to work in a highly specialist and technical field.
A particularly powerful part of Simon’s visit was his discussion of dyslexia and neurodiversity. Diagnosed later in life, Simon explained to pupils that these were not barriers to success and that resilience, self-belief, and determination have been key to his achievements. He encouraged children to believe in themselves, to persevere, and to continue to follow their ambitions, whatever challenges they may face.
Simon’s visit began with an interview on the school radio, followed by a tour of the school and time spent meeting pupils and staff, before delivering his assembly. The pupils were highly engaged throughout and asked thoughtful questions about careers, technology, and overcoming challenges.
We are extremely grateful to Simon for giving his time and for sharing such an honest and inspiring message.
