At William Ford, we believe learning should matter to a child, not just to a test. Think about your own evening after work. The chances are you'll turn on a boxset, load up a film, pick up a novel, or head to the theatre. We are all drawn to story. It's how we understand the world and how we understand ourselves.

We use that same pull towards story to shape our curriculum. Through an approach called Mantle of the Expert, pupils don't just learn about a topic, they become part of it. A class might become a team of flood defence specialists tasked with protecting a town, or space engineers designing a mission, or documentary makers using our own radio station and TV studio to tell a story. They might find themselves exploring a remote volcanic island built into our school corridors, or working as archaeologists in our Stone Age cave. All the knowledge and skills of the national curriculum are still there, simply carried by a story pupils genuinely want to be part of.

This matters enormously in our context. William Ford serves a community facing real challenges: high levels of deprivation, a significant number of pupils with special educational needs, and many families for whom English is an additional language. We don't see these as barriers to lower our ambition. We see them as reasons to raise it. Every child, whatever their starting point, deserves a curriculum that helps them believe in a future full of possibility.

Careers education runs through everything we do. Along the way, pupils take on roles as animators, chefs, engineers, broadcasters and curators, and along the way they discover careers they had never considered, and start to believe they could do them too. As one of our pupils put it, "We don't just learn things. We become them."

This is our vision in action: helping every child to be successful, not in spite of where they come from, but because of the ambition, imagination and hope we bring to their learning every single day.
