Reaching for the Stars with Vince Beech

Pupils at William Ford enjoyed an inspiring visit today from Vince Beech, who is currently working on developing a Google Maps type system for navigation on the moon. He spoke to pupils about careers linked to space and science, helping them to see how what they learn in the classroom could one day be used in cutting edge projects.

Vince shared his own story of growing up with autism, which was not diagnosed until his early twenties. He talked about finding school difficult at times, especially in subjects such as maths, and how he never imagined he would end up in a role that relies so heavily on mathematical thinking. His message to pupils was clear. Everyone faces barriers. What matters is how you respond, the support you seek and the persistence you show in overcoming them.

During the visit, Mr Huntingford reminded pupils of our school vision which begins with the words “Supporting pupils to be successful, healthy, fulfilled, and empowered to make a difference.” He explained that the school will always do everything it can to support pupils, but that they also need to show drive, determination and self belief.

This visit forms part of our wider commitment to careers education at William Ford. We regularly welcome visitors from a wide range of professions to widen pupils’ horizons, show them the many different paths they can follow and highlight that success often involves overcoming challenges along the way.

We are very grateful to Vince Beech for giving his time and for the honest and encouraging message he shared with our school community.
