"We can all face barriers, but they don't have to define our future."

We were delighted to welcome published author Sarah Johnson to William Ford to speak with our pupils about her life and the work she now does supporting schools.

Sarah has developed a career in inclusion and now works with schools and educational organisations to help ensure that all children, regardless of their barriers, academic, social, mental or physical, are able to access learning and the opportunities they deserve. Her work closely reflects our own ethos and commitment to supporting every child to succeed.

During her visit, Sarah spoke honestly about her childhood, including experiences of family members within the prison system and living with Tourette’s syndrome. She explained what Tourette’s can look like and how she manages it in everyday life. Pupils listened carefully and asked thoughtful questions, showing real maturity and empathy.

While hearing about her writing and her professional work was inspiring, the most powerful message for the children was simple. We will all face barriers in life, but those barriers do not have to define our future. With determination, support and belief, it is possible to move forward and achieve meaningful goals.

At William Ford, we regularly invite visitors who have turned their passions into purposeful careers. Previous speakers have included safeguarding specialist Amit Kalley and Race Across the World winner Alfie Watts, who now works around travel and mental health awareness. Each visit helps pupils understand that there are many different pathways into adulthood and success.

We are very grateful to Sarah for giving her time and speaking so openly with our pupils.
