Jamie Wace inspires William Ford pupils with lessons on entrepreneurship, dyslexia and turning challenges into strengths
Your biggest challenge today could become your greatest business tomorrow.
We were delighted to welcome Jamie Wace, CEO of Talamo, to William Ford C of E Junior School for a highly informative and inspiring careers visit.
Jamie's company, Talamo, provides an online screening tool to help schools identify dyslexia in children at an early stage. William Ford first met Jamie when we were involved in filming for a Channel 4 documentary last year, and we have since been proud to use Talamo's product to screen all of our Year 3 pupils, as well as any child who joins our school. Early identification means that support and intervention can be put in place without delay.
But the purpose of Jamie's visit today was to talk to our pupils about his career journey and to inspire them as future entrepreneurs and problem-solvers.
Jamie spoke openly about his own experience of dyslexia, and how rather than seeing it as a barrier, he came to understand it as something that shaped his thinking and ultimately gave him a purpose. He introduced pupils to one of the most important ideas in entrepreneurship: identify a problem, come up with a solution, and find out whether other people need that solution too. That insight became the foundation of Talamo.
He encouraged children to think about the challenges they face in their own lives and to consider that those challenges might one day become their greatest strengths. The very thing that feels like a difficulty today could be the thing that drives them to make a difference tomorrow.
Visits such as this are a vital part of our work to raise aspirations and broaden horizons for all of our pupils. We are very grateful to Jamie Wace for giving his time so generously and for speaking so honestly about both his career and his personal journey.
